Robert Scalf, son of John Scalf, Sr., and Edeah (Edy) Carlisle Scalf, was born about 1819 in Russell County, Virginia. We have been unable to determine his exact date of death at this time. However, Robert does not appear on census records after 1870 suggesting he had died before 1880. This does not confirm that Robert had actually died before the enumeration of the 1880 census, only that he could not be found on records.

Robert stated consistently on census records 1850- 1870 that he was born in Virginia. He enlisted June 01, 1863, as a Private in Co. F of the 49th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, Union Army, and was discharged at Lexington, KY December 26, 1864.

Neither Virgil Scalf, nor the author has been able to obtain a pension file for Robert Scalf at this time. Scalf Family History states the date and place of birth of Robert from this file as 1819 in Virginia. Robert was one of several brothers ordered by the court of Russell County, Virginia to be bound out to learn a trade.  No information has been found at this time to confirm or deny that Robert was ever removed from his parent’s home.

Robert and his brother Peter Scalf were married on the same day in Clay County, Kentucky. Robert married Martha Patsy Jackson October 18, 1835 in Clay Co. Patsy was the daughter of Lewis Jackson and Susan Hubbard Jackson. Charlotte (aka Lotty Hubbard) Jackson married Peter Scalf on the same date. We have been unable to determine the relationship between Lewis and Joseph Jackson at this time.

After their marriage, Robert and Patsy moved from Clay County to Perry Co. Kentucky and back to Clay County, eventually moving to Arkansas.

In the home of Robert and Martha Patsy Jackson Scalf in 1840, just five years after their marriage, five children are listed. The author has been unable to confirm that all of these children belonged to Robert and Patsy. It is possible that Robert and Patsy were the parents of twins. However, the number of children do not coincide with the date of their marriage and the 1840 census.

Census records (if near correct) suggest that two females were born between 1830 and 1840 and were 5-10 years old. A male was born between 1830 and 1835 and was 5-10 years old. Robert and Patsy married after the birth of at least two of these children making it questionable that the oldest children were actually their children. It is possible that they were siblings of Patsy, or even children of a relative of Robert or Patsy. However, it is also possible that the ages were stated incorrectly. Other records might help clarify this.

The tax lists of Clay County, Kentucky reveal that Robert eventually owned property in both Clay and Knox Counties. In 1836 and 1837, Robert owned property in Clay County.

Robert was missing from the tax lists of 1838 through 1842. However, he was found on the 1840 census of Clay County so we know that he was still living there in 1840, and it is possible he may have been overlooked on the tax lists. It is also possible he was in Tennessee with other family members for a couple of years; however, no records were found in the area of his Tennessee relatives.

The following children are reported in Scalf Family History, page 165 as children of Robert and Patsy that were not found on census records by the author or Virgil Scalf. The author has placed notes in italics at the end of some sentences.

Children of Robert and Patsy as reported in Scalf Family History:

2. Polly Scalf (Born?) (Died?) Married John Payne. (Polly was also used as a nickname for Mary--- M. Fleenor)
3. James Scalf (Born?) (Died?) Married Becca Ann Scalf January 30, 1858 in Clay County, KY. (Becca - daughter of Robert’s brother Jesse - M. Fleenor)
4. Chana Scalf (Born?) (Died?) Married Mesamore Smith 1857 in Knox County, KY. (Chana appears to be the daughter of Ira Scalf, listed as Charity or Chary in 1850 - See chapter on Ira Scalf - M. Fleenor)

   Records suggest that Chana Scalf was the daughter of Ira and Rosannah Gibson Scalf. Chana appeared to be listed as Chary (which was likely Chany) on the 1850 Claiborne County, Tennessee census, and has been very confusing to researchers, including the author.  (See chapter of Ira and Rosannah Gibson Scalf)

Records have not confirmed or denied that James Scalf was a son of Robert and Patsy. It is stated in the chapter of Robert Scalf, page 165 of Scalf Family History that Becca Ann Scalf married James Scalf, son of Robert Scalf and Martha Patsy Jackson, on January 30, 1858. However, we cannot confirm that this James was the son of Robert and Patsy.

On page 162 of the same book, in the chapter of Jesse Scalf, it is stated that the marriage took place November 17, 1857. However, no James is found in the home of Robert and Patsy on census records. This could have been an error made when compiling the book.  

It is also listed on page 163 of Scalf Family History, in the chapter of Jesse Scalf, that Becca Ann married John F. Northern, son of Joseph and Elizabeth Northern from Tennessee. One child (Joseph Northern born 1870) is listed for John Northern and Becca Ann in Scalf Family History.

Becca Ann Scalf, daughter of Jesse and Polly, was found as the wife of John Northern on the 1870 census of Clay County, Kentucky. It appears from this census that John and Becca probably married around 1859 or 1860. The 1870 census of Leslie County, Kentucky reveals four children from this union, Andrew, Martha, Betti, and Joseph Northern. (See chapter of Jesse Scalf)

Becca Ann did have a brother named James who married Judia Sizemore in 1886 Leslie County, Kentucky. Becca Ann was born 1836-1839 and we can only assume that if Robert and Patsy had a son named James, he was likely born around the same time or a few years earlier. If this is correct, he should have been on the 1850 census in the home of his parents. If he was born 1836, which was the year Robert and Patsy married, he would have only been 14 years old in 1850. If further information is found revealing this to be incorrect, this chapter will be updated to reflect the correction.

Polly Scalf, mentioned in Scalf Family History, is stated to have married John Payne. We have been unable to confirm that a Polly or Mary was the daughter of Robert and Patsy.

Manerva Scalf, daughter of Robert and Patsy, married William Payne suggesting that Polly could have been a sister of Manerva and possibly married the brother of Minerva’s husband; however, we have no information on either a John Payne or a Polly Scalf at this time.

We have also been unable to find Alexander Scalf with wife Linda. Therefore, the author can only confirm the children listed on the census records as children of Robert Scalf and Martha Patsy Jackson. Neither Alexander, Polly, James, nor Chany were listed on census records with the family of Robert and Patsy Jackson Scalf.

Robert’s family was first found on the census records of 1840 living in Perry County, Kentucky. Recall that Robert and Patsy married 18 October 1835 in Clay County, Kentucky. There were five children in the home in 1840 ranging in ages of less than 5 through 10 years old and suggesting that at least two of the children were either relatives, or children from a prior marriage of Patsy Jackson, if there was one.

In 1843, Robert was in Clay County, Kentucky living on Goose Creek and owned 100 acres there according to the 1843 tax list.

Robert was missing from the tax lists of 1844 -1847 but appears again in 1848. The author believes the family might have been living in Hawkins County, Tennessee during these years.

The 1846 Hawkins County, Tennessee School Population Census (The Squire’s Ledger) reveals Robert and his family were living in Hawkins County along with his brothers Ira and John Scalf, Jr. Robert had one child in school in this year. He was not found on records before or after 1846 in Hawkins County, Tennessee.

The 1850 tax list reveals that Robert owned two separate tracts of land, one in Clay County and one in Knox County.

Note that the oldest child (Malinda) on the 1850 census was born approximately1836 or 1837 with the other children being born after 1840. This does not correlate with the 1840 census concerning ages, and either the ages were incorrect on the census records, or four of the children from 1840 were gone in 1850. This does, however, correlate with the number of children in the home in 1840.

Malinda (1850 census) could have been one of the older females from the1840 census but there is no female of her age range in 1850 to match the 1840 census. However, there were three females and two males in 1840 and this does correspond to the 1850 census. It is very possible that the ages were stated incorrectly in 1840. It is also possible that the children, Alexander and Polly, mentioned in Scalf Family History are correct and they had left home at this time. However, their ages would not correlate with the marriage date of Robert and Patsy. For this reason, we have more questions than answers concerning the older children of Robert and Patsy as reported in Scalf Family History.

One might conclude that Alexander and Polly were born between Malinda and Manerva and were not in the home in 1850. Alexander might have died but it is reported that Polly married John Payne; therefore, Polly should have been listed since she would have been no more than 10-12 years old in 1850 if born after Malinda.

Note that the 1850 census suggests that Greenberry and William were twins. However, their ages are different in 1860. No further records have been found to suggest they were twins and no family legend has been reported to suggest this.

In 1850, a Lewis Jackson (age 46) was found with a daughter Martha in the home in Clay County, Kentucky. It is unclear to the author exactly who this Lewis Jackson might have been. It is possible he was the father of Martha Patsy Jackson; however, Martha Patsy Jackson Scalf was listed in the home of her husband in 1850 and Martha listed with Lewis Jackson is four years younger than Martha (aka Patsy) in the home of Robert Scalf.

It is possible that Martha Patsy Jackson Scalf was in her own home with her husband, Robert, on August 1, 1850 where she was enumerated the first time, and was visiting her parents on August 5, 1850 where she was enumerated again; however, her age is off on this census if this is correct, and she was not listed under her married name. This is not a significant factor, however, because the enumerator likely knew she was Lewis’ daughter and simply listed her under Jackson. It is possible as well that she and Robert were having marital problems at that time, and she had returned home.

Robert was then found on the tax lists from 1851 through 1869 with the exception of a few years he was missing or the tax lists were missing. Robert had moved from Log Lick to Hammond Fork in Clay County. He also owned property in Knox County but the amount is not listed on this tax list.

We have no information from the tax lists of 1852 - 1857 other than Robert’s name. He is missing from the list in 1853 and 1855 but found listed in the Will of William Broughton in 1855 confirming that he was still in Kentucky.

1855 - Robert was missing from the tax list but mentioned in the will of William Broughton in this year.

In the will of William Broughton on January 15, 1855, Robert Scalf was listed as responsible for two notes. One note was for 16 bushels of salt with an unknown value, and the other note was valued at $1.00, which was due on March 9, 1844.

By 1858, Robert was gone from Hammond Fork and was living at Otter Creek where he owned 100 acres.

No information is stated other than the name on the 1859 and 1860 tax list; however, it is assumed that Robert was still living at Otter Creek.

By 1860, we find Martha Jackson Scalf listed as Patsy confirming that she did use Patsy as another name for Martha.

Note that their son, Greenbury, was born in Tennessee about 1847 if his age is correct on the 1860 census. Robert was listed on the 1846 Hawkins County School Population Schedule but was not listed in 1847. However, if Greebury was born in Tennessee in 1847, this confirms that Robert and Patsy were still in Tennessee in this year and moving back to Kentucky by 1848 where Robert was found on the 1848 tax list.

Robert and Patsy had a total of nine children by 1860 according to census schedules.

Robert was then found 1861- 1869 on the tax lists of Clay County, Kentucky. He was still living at Otter Creek and owned 100 acres.

A property deed found by Virgil Scalf reveals that Robert purchased land by three notes dated January 15, 1862 but had defaulted on the notes. In 1867 the property was sold to the highest bidder, which was D.Y. Lyttle (Little) (See deed further on in this chapter)

Robert enlisted in the Union Army June 01, 1863, as a Private in Co. F of the 49th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. He was discharged at Lexington, KY December 26, 1864. Robert’s son, Greenberry, also enlisted at the same time as his father, but is reported to have died at Camp Burnside.

Robert was discharged from service December 26, 1864; however, in November of 1864, Robert applied for a patent on another piece of property, which he then sold in 1869 to William Keene.

Purchase was made for a warrant from the Clay County Court, which authorized a survey for the land in question. After receiving the warrant and survey, the Land Office Division in Frankfort, Kentucky issued a patent on the tract of land to Robert under the County Court Orders Series.   This warrant, a 50-acre tract of land - Patent #36425, was surveyed on November 1, 1864 and granted to Robert on October 2, 1865. 1867 Tax List - Robert is again missing from the tax records in this year. However, in this year the Sheriff of Clay County sold the property purchased in 1862.

According to the sale order, Robert had no personal property for security or bond for the property and owed a total of $69.44 on the property located on Goose Creek in Clay County, Kentucky. No doubt, the Civil War had taken its toll on Robert’s family.

THE LAND OF ROBERT SCALF IS SOLD BY SHERIFF OF CLAY COUNTY, KENTUCKY

This indenture made this 8^th day of February 1867 between Thomas Cook Sheriff of Clay County in the State of Kentucky of the one part & D. Y. Lyttle of the County & State aforesaid of the other part, witnesseth that whereas of Duton May sued out of the Clerk’s office of the Clay Circuit Court three units of firafacious against the estate of Robert Scalf for the sum in the aggregate of 69 dollars & 44 cents each firafacious bearing date the 15^th day of January 1862, returnable the first day of March 1862 which executious was directed to the Sheriff of said County & delivered to the said Thomas Cook who was there legally qualified & acting as Dept Sheriff for Asa Gilbert who was the High Sheriff of Clay County at the time & the said Deputy by virtue of said three firafations & one fee bill which has been placed in his hands by G. W. Price Clerk of the Clay Circuit Court levied the same on a certain piece or parcel of land on the estate of Robert Scalf he having no personal property & he failing to give bond & security for the payment of said debts the said Dept Sheriff as aforesaid in purcurance of said writs & ascending to the law of said State of Kentucky legally advertised & made known the same after having said parcel of land valued by Thomas Piuss? & Chilly? Hibbard under oath they being disinterested house keepers of Clay County not related to either party who valued said piece of land at one hundred & fifty dollars, the valuation is made in writing & returned with the executions & fee bill as a part of the return, the land sold not bringing two thirds of the valuation & not enough to pay the executions I levied on the redemption of the same after advertising the parse according to law & D. Y. Lyttle on the 8^th day of February 1862 same being the first day of the February Term of the Clay County Court at the front door of the court house because the purchaser of said land by bidding the highest & best bid for said land vig?, to wit, fifty five dollars & afterwards on the 1^st day of March Term 1862 after duly and recording to law & advertising the same on the first day of the March Term of the Clay County Court 1862 in the court house door  in the county aforesaid exposed to call at public or action, the redemption of said land as I had the land & whereas David Y. Lyttle bid the sum of fifteen dollars for the redemption right of said land making the sum of seventy dollars which he bid for said land & the redemption right of the same & no other person bidding so much as he did either for the land or the redemption right of the same, the same was publicly struck off to the said David Y. Lyttle & four years now having elapsed & the defendant in the execution Robert Scalf having failed to redeem said land or offer to redeem the same now to confirm the purchase of the lands aforesaid unto the said D. Y. Lyttle so as the aforesaid made according to law.

This indenture witnesseth that the said Thomas Cook High Sheriff of Clay County & superior of Asa Gilbert for & in consideration of the sum of seventy dollars to him in hand paid by the said D. Y. Lyttle by his arranging the sums with the plaintiff in the executions, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged hath given, granted, bargained & sold conveyed & confirmed unto D. Y. Lyttle & by those present doth grant, bargain, sell & convey unto David Y. On April 19, 1869, Robert sold to William Keene 50 acres on the Ground Hog Fork of Otter Creek in Clay County, Kentucky. According to this deed, Robert was still in Kentucky in April of 1869.

This indenture made and entered into this 19 day of April 1869 by and between Robert Scalf and wife of the one part & Wm Keene of the other part witnesseth that for and in consideration of the sum of (blank) in hand paid the receipt whereof and is hereby acknowledged hath this day granted bargained and sold unto the said Wm Keene the following described tract of land situated in Clay County on the ground hog fork of otter creek and bounded as follows towit: beginning at two black gums and white oak and comes to a 50 acre survey made for Jack Parker thence with a line of said 50 acre survey N70W109 poles to 2 chestnut & oaks & a white oak on the point of a ridge thence S60W41 poles to a stake thence S30 poles to a stake thence N60E50 poles thence S76E106 poles to a stake thence N24 poles to the beginning said boundary is hereby in a patent from the commonwealth to said Scalf bearing date the 2^nd day of October 1865 & here delivered to said Wm Keene. To have and to hold the land hereby conveyed unto said Keene and his heirs & the Robert Scalf hereby warrants the title of the aforesaid tract of land & appurtenances belonging unto the said Wm Keene his heirs & assigns forever free from the claims of himself his hers & all other persons whatsoever. We have no way of knowing the exact date Robert and Patsy left Clay County, Kentucky; however, they appeared on the 1870 Benton County, Arkansas census by August of 1870. It appears that Robert and his family had left Kentucky sometime between April of 1869 and August of 1870.

In 1870, Robert and Patsy were found living at Round Prairie Township in Benton County, Arkansas. This is the last record found for Robert and Martha Patsy Jackson Scalf.

Benton County, Arkansas is located in the extreme Northwest corner of Arkansas and borders both Missouri and Oklahoma. Some of the family of Robert and Patsy were found in Oklahoma and some in Missouri. However, a thorough search of census records of Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri failed to reveal a census record for Robert and/or Patsy.

A descendent reported that both Robert and his son Greenbury were killed in the war; however, records reveal that only Greenbury had died. An excerpt from a letter written to Jonathan Harmon’s family by his aunt, Floretta Starnes, is listed here. Floretta had been told that both Robert and Greenbury had died in the war.

Dear Earl, Vivian and family-. Decided to set down and write a few lines tonight- About family history - you can tell the boys that Mama’s dad, Great Brittain Scalf, was just a young boy during the civil war and lived on a southern plantation. Robert and Patsy were the parents of ten children by 1870 according to census records.

It is unknown at this time if Robert died in Arkansas and Patsy remarried or what might have happened, but it does appear that something certainly happened 1870-1880 to split the family unit.

Great Britton, his brother Robert, and brother William were found in Switzerland County, Indiana in 1880. Great Britton and Robert were living in the home of Louisa Ostrander. Their brother William was married at this time and living next door. The relationship of the Ostrander’s to the family (if any) is unknown at this time.

Living next door to Lousia Ostrander is William Scalf (son of Robert and Patsy).

Family legend reports that bushwhackers killed Robert Scalf around 1880. If this is correct, this likely occurred in Arkansas and not Kentucky, as originally thought, for Robert was not found in Kentucky after 1869 and was living in Benton County, Arkansas in 1870. No further records were found for Robert or his wife Patsy and the author can only conclude that at least Robert died 1870-1880 and maybe Patsy as well.

Malinda Scalf, daughter of Robert Scalf and Martha Patsy Jackson was born about 1837 in Clay County, Kentucky (1850 Clay County, KY census).

Very little is known of Malinda. Scalf Family History, page 166 reports that Malinda Scalf married William Payne March 29, 1854 in Clay County, Kentucky. However, research of Virgil Scalf reports that Malinda and William were married March 19, 1854. William was 30 years old, a widower, and born in Tennessee. Malinda Scalf was19 years old at the time of their marriage, single, and born in Clay County, KY. (Marriages of Clay County, KY)

William and Malinda were found on the census records of 1860 and 1870 in Clay County, Kentucky. Malinda’s parents (Robert and Patsy) left Clay County, Kentucky 1869-1870 but William and Malinda remained in Kentucky.

It has also been reported that Malinda had a child out of wedlock and that she died shortly after his birth. However, records reveal that Malinda was living in 1900. Richard Holland is reported to have been the father of her son, Pharris.

Cliff Holland, a descendent of Richard Holland and his wife Ellen, states, when Richard and Ellen Holland were ready to move, Malinda made Richard take Pharris with them and Richard and Ellen Holland adopted Pharis.

The author has been unable to determine with any amount of certainty that this was the same Malinda Scalf, daughter of Robert Scalf. The child in question (Pharis Holland) was born 1869-1870 according to census records.  

It was stated that Richard and Ellen Harris Holland adopted Pharis, son of Malinda Scalf. Richard Holland and wife Ellender (Ellen) were found on the 1870 Leslie County, Kentucky census with several children in the home. Pharis was not in the home on this census but appeared in the home in 1880. His calculated birth date is 1870.

By 1880, Richard Holland was listed with wife Ellen and their children; however, Pharris Holland is now in the home and is the same age as Richard’s son, William, certainly suggesting that Pharis was not the son of Richard and Ellen. Both Pharis and William were born about 1870 according to this census. William and Pharis were not twins, however, because Pharris was not listed with the family until 1880.

NOTE: A Richard and Margarette Holland were living in household #129. Richard was 70 and his wife Margarettte was 72. Both were born in North Carolina. This may or may not be the parents of Richard Holland.

On the 1870 census of the Richard Holland household, William Holland (son of Richard and Ellen Holland) was born in February of 1870 and was 10 years old in 1880. Pharis was not listed in this home in 1870 but appears there in 1880 at the same age as William. Pharis was listed under the surname of Holland in 1880.

If Pharis was born in 1869, he most certainly was living with someone until 1880; however, he does not appear in the home of Malinda Scalf Payne on the 1870 census. We have been unable to find Pharis listed in the home of any of the Scalf or Payne family on the 1870 census records of Kentucky at this time.

In fact, a thorough search of the census records has failed to produce Pharris Holland at all in 1870. He should have been in the home of someone in 1870 according to his stated birth date. Therefore, we cannot determine if Pharis was the son of this Malinda Scalf Payne, or the son of someone else. We cannot confirm that he was born 1869-1870. If he was born in 1870, however, he might have been born after the enumeration of the 1870 census and this would explain why he could not be found in 1870.  

Pharis Holland appears to have left Kentucky after the enumeration of the 1880 census according to information from Cliff Holland. Pharis married his first wife Gracie Mary Roberts 1885 in Arkansas. This calculates his age to have been around 16 years old when he married Gracie. He was found living in Madison County, Arkansas in 1900 and Lincoln County, Oklahoma in 1910. His first wife had died and he had remarried.

The census records of 1860 and 1870 Clay County, Kentucky show that there were five children in the home of William Payne and Malinda Scalf; however, these children were from a second marriage of William Payne to Nancy Phillips.

A listing for the marriage date and children of William Payne and Nancy Phillips was found at Ancestry.com. However, the author believes there might be a mistake on the birth date of their daughter Rebecca. She is listed with a birth date of May 6, 1854. This would have been after the marriage of William Payne to Malinda Scalf since William and Malinda married in March of 1854 according to Kentucky Marriages.

Note that an older son, Jacob, who appears on the 1850 and 1860 census of Clay County is not listed on this record. The contributor of this information also states a birth date for Malinda Scalf of March 6, 1834 for which we cannot deny or confirm; however, her parents were not married at this time.

Note the different birth dates of Malinda Payne and the marriage date of William Payne and Malinda Scalf.

William Payne and wife Nancy were enumerated on the 1850 census of Clay County, Kentucky.

The information above suggests that William Payne had married first in 1834 to Sarah A. Hoskins and had three children born 1835-1837. He then married Nancy Phillips or Phipps in 1844 and had five more children. He then married Malinda Scalf in 1854. The author cannot verify the marriage to Mary Hoskins, nor the children due to the names not being listed on census records prior to 1850. Children from the first marriage do not appear to be in the home of William Payne after his marriage to Nancy.

The 1870 Clay County census reveals the same children as the 1860 census with the same approximate ages; however, John from the 1860 census is missing. He would have been 18 in 1870 and had probably left home shortly before the enumeration of the census. John was found as head of house in 1880 married to Bittie Bright. Peter, the last child listed in 1870 was born about 1857 suggesting he was the first child of William and Malinda.

The son of Ceely Ann Scalf and Duton May was also living in the home of William and Malinda Scalf Payne in 1870 indicating that one or both of his parents had died. However, his mother (Ceely Ann Scalf May) was found still living in 1880.

William and Malinda were found on the 1880 census in the home of John Payne and wife, Bittie Bright Payne. John Payne was the son of William Payne and his second wife, Nancy Phillips. Bittie’s father, John Bright, was also in the home.

In 1900, William Payne and Malinda Scalf Payne were living in the home of a grandson, William Tuttle. William and Malinda were not found after 1900; however, it is possible that William died and Malinda remarried or moved. It is also possible that both William and Malinda had died.

The above records reveal that Malinda Scalf and her husband William Payne remained together at least until the 1900 census was enumerated. Only one child can be confirmed as the child of William and Malinda. This was Peter Payne listed on the 1880 census with a calculated birth date of 1857.

If Pharis were the child of Malinda Scalf Payne, then he would have been the child of an extramarital affair considering his birth date, and the fact that Malinda was with her husband, William Payne, from 1860 through 1900.

No records have been found to confirm or deny the validity of this at this time; however, the family of Pharis Holland is presented below in the event that it can be confirmed that Malinda Scalf Payne was the mother of Pharis Holland.

 It is suggested that Malinda Scalf Payne was the mother of Pharris Holland; however, the author cannot confirm or deny this information at this time and would be interested in hearing from any descendents of this line concerning Malinda and Pharris.

Pharris has been found with various spellings of his name. The author has chosen to use the spelling of Pharris, as stated by a descendent, Cliff Holland. .

Pharris H Holland was born on 26 Nov 1869 in Clay Co, Kentucky. He died on 9 Apr 1925 in Stroud, Lincoln Co, Oklahoma. He was buried in Apr 1925 in Stroud, Lincoln Co, Oklahoma. He was related to his parents by adoption. He had other parents.

Pharris is the Bastard son of Richard Henry Holland Jr. and Milinda Scalf. When Richard and Ellender were ready to move, Milinda Scalf made Richard take Pharris with them. Milinda Scalf did not go with them. Richard and Ellender are said to have adopted Pharris and raised him with their other children. There was no bastard bond for Pharris. So we do not know when he came to live with Richard and Ellender. He may have come when he was still a baby. Please note that the Bastard Bond is when the father makes payment to the mother for support. It is not a bad name, but that was what it was called in those days. It is something like our child support of today.

Pharris married (1) Gracie Mary Roberts in 1885 in Arkansas. Gracie was born in 1869 in Boston, Madison Co, Arkansas. She died in 1894 in Madison Co, Arkansas. She was buried in 1894.

They had the following children:

1. Joseph E Holland was born on 27 Aug 1886. He died on 27 Feb 1950.
2. Eller Holland.
3. Ellen Ella was born in Jan 1890 in Boston, Madison Co, Arkansas. She died on 4 Mar 1936. She was buried in Mar 1936.

Pharris married (2) Malicia Alice Jane Smith daughter of Simon Peter Smith IV and Nancy Edney Fuller in 1894 in Madison Co, Arkansas. Malicia was born on 20 Feb 1880 in Boston, Madison Co, Arkansas. She died on 7 Sep 1965 in Tulsa, Tulsa Co, Oklahoma. She was buried in Sep 1965.

Pat Pennington, wife of Marvin Pennington (great grandson of George Washington Smith and Manerva Jane Scalf) submitted information on the family and descendants of George Washington Smith and Manerva Jane Scalf via email during September and October of 2001.

In a letter dated September 27, 2001, Pat states the following:

“Dear Margaret

“This is what my husband was told several times by his mother and grandmother, Linda (Smith) Pippin and Vivian Parks. That Manerva Jane Scalf was Indian and George Washington Smith traded horses for her. This is a copy of a letter that Vivian McDonald-Parks wrote to us:  My Father Henry McDonald son of Sara Jane Smith and Robert McDonald said his Grandfather George Washington Smith bought Manerva Jane Scalf an Indian girl as his wife. I have heard she was Cherokee. Granddaughter of Sarah Jane Smith and Robert McDonald wrote a letter saying her grandparents always told her that George W. Smith bought Manerva J. Scalf with horses. Then he died while in the in the army, she was denied of her husbands army pension because she was Indian, but she was finally awarded $8.00 a month.” (Marvin and Pat Pennington)

Another email from Pat Pennington dated 10/03/07:

“Dear Margaret

“This is from the book that Linda Smith Pippin put together on the Smiths from Kentucky to Missouri. The young couple George Washington and Manerva Jane were referred to as Wash and Jane, they were married in Slip Gap, Kentucky, by G. W. Smith, could not find them to be related but would think they were some how. The marriage is recorded in Manchester (Clay Co) Kentucky. I know by their affidavits on record Wash grew up with Anderson and Flemmon Keen, and after the war worked for Anderson Keen. These men stated they knew Wash to be a stout rugged man prior to the war, but after joining the 47^th Kentucky Infantry (Confederacy) and mustering out a year later Wash suffered with chronic diarrhea and was about half disabled. By the time Wash and Jane had moved to Indiana with their four oldest boys who were born in Kentucky, Jane not being able to read or write, had others to record in her Bible birth dates and places of her children, and were kept well with the excption of her own birth date, as well as Wash’s. Jane’s records were different from the census of 1850, Wash in the home of his parents was age six, and Jane was seven. In 1860 the census gives their ages the same. In 1870 they arrive in Sullivan Co. Indiana giving the age of Wash two years older than Jane, again in 1880 Indiana, Wash was seven years older so you see they had lost track, for this reason I believe the older dates to be more correct and that Wash was a year younger than Jane or the same age. Isaac married to Lucretia Keen daughter of William Keen and Retta Smith Keen. Possibly Lucrecia was a sister to the two Keen boys Wash grew up with. In 1870 their property was valued at one hundred dollars, not bad for a poor man in those times. A couple of years later their little girl Elizabeth under two years old died, and the same year Anna Susan was born, they moved to Missouri between the births of Marion born in Indiana and Samuel (Jack) born in Missouri. Wash went to work for Fred Reed a short time before his death in 1888. Jane then left with five children at home, it was another year before she received the eight dollar a month pension from Wash’s Infantry time. James was said to have taken care of his mother and brothers and sister, as he was the eldest left at home at the time of Wash’s death. At the time of the Smith’s move to Reeds, Reeds was a bustling City complete with Rail-Road Station supplying transportation and commodities. Reeds was growing into the late forties with a bank, three grocery stores, a drug store, a Doctor, a cannery, a casket factory, and a feed mill. At the loss of the passenger train the City lost its vigor. Wash and Jane as well as Jane’s sister and some of theirs are buried in Harvey Cemetery north east of Reeds on F Highway. By now Reeds only has a Post Office and a Church.” (Pat and Marvin Pennington)

The author believes the sister of Manerva Jane mentioned by Pat Pennington was Susan Scalf Bickford.

Note:  I have always been under the impression that the Washington Smith who married Manerva Scalf was the son of Milton Smith and first wife Sally Smith and that George Washington Smith (son of Hugh and Malinda) married Martha Hobbs.

I still believe this is more likely the marriage for the son of Milton Smith and Sally Smith. The children from this marriage did not have the best of lives growing up.   They went through what was a very difficult and drawn out divorce between their parents, which lasted several years. Milton appears to have had 3 children with his second wife before they were married and I can see all this as a good reason for Washington to want to move far from all those memories. Greenberry Manuel Smith, son of George Washington Smith and Manerva Jane Scalf, was born January 9, 1862 in Kentucky, and died August 14, 1935 in Reeds Missouri.

Note:  Greenberry Manuel Smith had two children by his first wife and three children by his second wife. He lived and raised his family in Reeds, MO. James and Alma Smith Pennington were the parents of Marvin Pennington whose wife (Pat) graciously submitted information for this research.

Ceely Ann Scalf, daughter of Robert Scalf and Martha Patsy Jackson was born 1844 in Tennessee according to the 1860 census. However, on the 1850 census of Clay County, Kentucky it was stated she was born in Kentucky, as well as the 1880 and 1900 census of Knox County, Kentucky.

Ceely Ann’s full name might have been Cecelia Ann Scalf and was probably named for her aunt, Cecelia (Sela) Scalf, sister of her father, Robert. Robert’s uncle, Benjamin Scalf, married Ceely Ann Keziah and we believe that Sela Scalf Lockard (daughter of John Scalf, Sr.) was likely named for her aunt as well. The spelling of Ceely has also been found in the records, as well as Ceely/Cealy and Sela. The spelling of Ceely is most often used in these writings.

Ceely Ann Scalf married Duton May - who from appearance - also signed as a witness to the marriage of her parents, Robert Scalf and Martha Patsy Jackson in 1835. Duton May had been married prior to his marriage to Ceely Ann. He was born around 1811 and was 33 years her senior. The children on the 1860 census below were the children of Duton May and his first wife whom we have no information for.

According to the 1860 census of Clay County, Kentucky, Ceely Ann was 16 years old when she married Duton May. Duton was 49 years old.

In 1870, Willis May, son of Duton May and Ceely Ann Scalf May was living in the home of Ceely Ann’s sister, Malinda Scalf Payne. The 1870 census states his age as four years old placing his birth date around 1866. Ceely Ann and Duton were not found in 1870.

Sometime between 1860 and 1880 Duton May died and Ceely Ann was found living in the home of the Isaac McKinney family in 1880. Listed beneath Sely A. May are two children; Belle May born about 1874, and Misey May (probably Missy/Melissa?) born about 1865. This suggests that these children were children of Ceely Ann Scalf and Duton May. However, they cannot be confirmed.

Note that the last child of Duton May and his former wife was born about 1856. He then married Ceely Ann Scalf in 1860. This is the basis for the belief that Belle and Misey were likely daughters of Duton May and Ceely Ann Scalf. However, it is very possible that they were relatives of Duton and Ceely Ann, and simply living in the Isaac McKinney home with Ceely Ann in 1880. Ceely (Sely), Belle, and Misey were all listed as servants in the home of Isaac McKinney.

By 1900, Cealy Ann Scalf May had married Daniel B. Allen, who appears to have been her third husband. The marriage record of Cealy Ann and D. B. shows that she had been married to a Davis prior to her marriage to D. B. However, we do not have his full name at this time.

Cealy Ann and D. B. Allen married on 10 March 1899. This marriage was a second marriage for D. B. Allen. He was 49 years old and she was 45.

Since there is no 1890 census, we are assuming that all of the above children were children of D. B. Allen and Eliza Jane. This is based on census birth dates, and the marriage records of D. B. Allen and Ceely/Cealy Ann (Scalf) May-Davis.

Ceely Ann stated on the 1900 census that she had four children with four living. It does not appear that any of her children were in the home of D. B. Allen in 1900.

The census records suggest the following children were children of Ceely/Cealy Ann Scalf and Duton May. We can only confirm Willis May at this time. However, Ceely/Cealy Ann stated she had four children with four living.

We have no information at this time concerning the fourth child of Ceely/Cealy Ann (Scalf) May-Davis-Allen. This child, who might have died, however, would have been living in 1900.

The 1910 census reveals that Ceely Ann (Scalf) May-Allen died 1900-1910. Her husband, D. B. Allen, was then listed as widowed in 1910.

Willis May, son of Duton May and Ceely Ann Scalf was born about 1866 (census). He was found on the 1870 Clay County, Kentucky census in the home of his aunt and uncle, William Payne and Malinda Scalf. His parents were not found in 1870 but his mother was found living in the home of Isaac McKinney in 1880 and remarried to D. B. Allen by 1900.

Willis was not found on the 1880 census, but appears on the1900 Knox County, Kentucky census where he was boarding with Joseph Hammons.

Marriages of Knox County, Kentucky reveal that Willis had been married three times. His first wife was Luvey Hubbard whom he married June 21, 1888 in Knox County. After her death he married Lizzie Gray on April 19, 1893 in Knox County, Kentucky.

Willis and Lizzie divorced and Willis remarried to Nancy Belle McKinney who had been married prior to this marriage and was divorced. She was the daughter of Isaac and Martha McKinney. Recall that Willis’ mother, Ceely Ann Scalf May was living in the home of Isaac McKinney in 1880.

Nancy Belle McKinney was not the same person as Belle McKinney living in the McKinney home in 1880. Belle from the McKinney home (1880) was born about 1874. Nancy Belle McKinney, wife of Willis was born about 1885. Note that Willis May did not give his father’s name when he married Nancy Belle McKinney June 18, 1910. He did state that his father was Dudley (aka Duton) May when he married Lizzie Gray.

It does not appear that Willis May was raised by his parents for he was living with his aunt and uncle at the age of four years old in 1860. His father was not found in 1880 but his mother was in the McKinney home in that year. Willis never appeared on a census record with either of his parents.

The author believes that Willis May left the Clay/Knox County area 1870 - 1880. Although it cannot be confirmed at this time, it is possible that Willis made his way to Ohio County, Kentucky where a Willis May was found in the home of Charles and Mary Haynes at Fordsville Precinct of Ohio County listed as a farm laborer. However, this may not be the same Willis May.

On the 1900 census of Knox County, Kentucky, Willis May was living in the home of Joseph Hammons. Wilkerson Broughton was living four houses away in household No. 119. Milton Scalf, son of William Scalf and Joicy (Jackson) Scalf were living in household No. 120, next door to Wilkerson. Milton was a grandson of Peter and Lotty Scalf. Joseph Hammons was living in household No. 125. Other Broughton families were living nearby.

In June of 1910, Willis married Nancy Belle (McKinney) Clark, daughter of Isaac and Martha McKinney. Nancy stated she was divorced from her fist husband. Willis’ mother Ceely Ann Scalf May was living with the Isaac McKinney family in 1880 Knox County.

On her marriage record, Nancy stated she was 25 in 1910 and Willis stated he was about 40 years old. Nancy would have been born about 1885. Willis’ age calculates to a birth date of 1870. He was actually born 1865-1866 and should have been 45 or 46. Willis did not state his father’s name but stated his mother was Celia Ann May.

If Nancy’s age was stated correctly, she had not been born when Ceely Ann Scalf was living with Nancy’s parents in 1880.

Nancy was living with her parents at Road Fork on Stinking Creek in Knox County, Kentucky when the census was enumerated in April of 1910. Nancy stated she was divorced and had two children with two children living. There were two grandchildren of Isaac and Martha McKinney in the home; however, the surname was not Clark. The index lists them as Wilson.  They are listed as Wilson also on the 1920 census, which is more legible than the 1910 census.

One son was Charlie or Worley (spelling illegible) was five years old and Garret was one year and eight months old. They were still living with their grandparents in 1920 and the names were listed as Charlie Wilson and Garrad Wilson.

We cannot confirm these children to be Nancy’s children and they may have been the children of one of Nancy’s siblings. The census page from 1910 was not dated but the previous page states 15 April 1910 and this is probably the date for this page as well. If so, the census was enumerated two months before Nancy’s marriage to Willis May.

Willis and Nancy were not found in 1920 or 1930 and it is unknown if they remained together or divorced, or when they died. We also have no information on any children from this marriage. If Willis had any children at all from either marriage it is unknown at this time.

Isaac and Martha McKinney were still living in Knox County, Kentucky in 1930; however, their two grandsons had left home by 1930.

GREENBERRY SCALF

Greenberry Scalf, son of Robert Scalf and Martha Patsy Jackson was born about 1847 in Kentucky and enlisted in the same unit as his father, Robert Scalf, in the Civil War. It is reported that Greenberry died at Camp Burnside in Kentucky. He would have been very young at this time.

Note: Green B Scalf, the cousin of Greenberry Scalf, is the son of Ira Scalf and was discussed in the Ira Scalf chapter.

Green B. Scalf enlisted with Company B, 47th Kentucky Volunteer Mounted Infantry in September 5, 1863, but he did not report for duty and was listed as a deserter. However, as seen below, Greenberry didn’t actually deserted. The reason he did not report for duty with that unit is because he enlisted with another unit two weeks later. Since the change was from mounted infantry to regular infantry, we can speculate that Greenberry was unable to provide his own horse.

William M. Scalf, son of Robert and Patsy Jackson Scalf was born September 19, 1848 in Kentucky and died February 22, 1922 in Jefferson County, Indiana. William married Mary Elizabeth Denning July 22, 1869 in Jefferson County, Indiana (Scalf Family History, pg. 166). They were found in Switzerland County, Indiana living next door to Louisa Ostrander in 1880.

William’s brothers, Great Britton and Robert were in the home of Louisa Ostrander in 1880. We have no knowledge of a relationship between the Ostrander family and the family of Robert Scalf.

William and Mary Elizabeth Denning Scalf moved to Trimble County, KY by 1900 and were still there in 1910; however, by 1920, they had moved to Jefferson County, Indiana.

There are a total of seven children on the 1880, 1900 and 1910 censuses. Mary stated in 1900 that she had 10 children born with 7 living. Scalf Family History lists 8 children. Scalf Family History also states that Hugh died young. He was not listed on the 1900 census.

Ellenora from the 1880 census was probably Nora listed in Scalf Family History. The other children are all listed in Scalf Family History. One child, Cora, listed in Scalf Family History, is not listed on the census records and we cannot confirm that Cora was a child of William and Mary E. Denning Scalf; however, we have listed her family as stated in Scalf Family History.

Obituary of Joshua H. Thayer:

Joshua H. Thayer, 71, of 4424 Avondale drive, died Sunday morning at 9:45 o'clock at the Lutheran hospital after being ill three weeks. He had been employed at the S. F. Bowser and Company plant.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Ivy Shirley and Mrs. Cora Thomas, both of Fort Wayne, Mrs. Nora Koop of Muncie; a step-daughter, Mrs. Jessie Bear of Madison; a son, Charles of Indianapolis; 17 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. The body was taken to Mungovan & Sons' mortuary and will be removed late today to Indianapolis for services and burial.

Cora L. Scalf, the daughter of William M. Scalf and Mary Elizabeth Denning was born about 1872 in Indiana. Cora married (1) Charles Edward Imel on April 29, 1890 in Jefferson County, Indiana and they had one daughter, Ruth Imel. Charles was the brother of Eliza Imel who married Robert Enoch Scalf, the brother of Cora Scalf. Cora and Robert Scalf are found living with their parents in the 1880 Switzerland County, Indiana census. Cora Scalf Imel married (2) William A. Melton on April 29, 1902.

Cora L. Melton died on August 30, 1931 in Creek County, Oklahoma. However, she is buried at the Fairmount Cemetery in Madison County, Indiana. Cora’s parents, William M. Scalf & Mary Elizabeth Denning Scalf, are buried in the Fairmount Cemetery.

Robert Enoch Scalf was born February 24, 1877 and died November 25, 1949. Scalf Family History states that Robert married first to Eliza J. Imel October 4, 1893 in Jefferson County, Indiana and they were the parents of Frank and Charles Edwin Scalf. Frank is believed to have died young.

Robert and Liza were not found on the census records but Robert and his second wife, Sophia E. Sherlock were found in 1910 in Shelby County, Indiana. She was the daughter of Daniel H. Sherlock and Louise Detmer.  Frank and Charles were found in the home in 1910. Frank is listed as William F. and Charles as Charlie E. William F. was not found on the 1920 census in the home so he may have died 1910-1920.

Several children are listed in Scalf Family History that do not appear on the census records and are assumed to have died. The following census records can be compared to Scalf Family History, pages 165-170.

The 1900 Jefferson County, Indiana census reveals that Liza (Eliza) was living in the home of her parents Benjamin and Isabella Imel. Frank and Edward were in the home. It appears that Robert and Liza were separated or divorced at this time.

Eliza Scalf died August 9, 1900 and is buried in Sec. 27 Twp. 4N Range 11E. Her tombstone reads: Eliza Scalf, wife of Robert, Dec 20, 1876 - Aug 9, 1900. Pleasant Ridge Cemetery records, Milton Township, Jefferson County, Indiana.

Robert Enoch Scalf was found living in Shelby County, Indiana in 1910 with his second wife Sophia E. Sherlock. A son, William F. born 1895 is in the home and appears to be William Frank, son of Robert Enoch Scalf and Eliza Imel. Their son, Charles Edward, (listed here as Charlie E) was also in the home. This suggests that Eliza J. Imel Scalf had died 1900-1910; however, we cannot confirm this.

William Frank Scalf, son of Robert Enoch Scalf and Eliza J. (Liza) Imel was born September 6, 1894. William Scalf died April 21, 1912 in Madison, Jefferson Co., Indiana. Harry must have been the nickname for William F. Scalf. He is listed as Harry Scalf on his death certificate.

SUDDENLY SUMMONED

Death of Frank Scalf Sunday Midnight.

Mr. Frank Scalf, aged eighteen years, died suddenly last midnight of heart disease at the home of Mr. David Ryker, on North Walnut street. He was the son of Robert Scalf, of Trimble County, Kentucky, his mother, who was a niece of Mr. John Melton, of this city, being dead. His uncle, Mr. George Imel, came in at noon from Columbus after receiving the news of his death. Frank was a young man of fine character, highly esteemed by those who knew him, and was employed as a workman at the C.B. Melish Pearl Button Factory. It had been his ambition later on to make a study of architecture and follow that occupation for a livelihood. The burial will be at Pleasant Ridge.

Charles married first to Iva McNutt January 20, 1917 in Ohio County, Indiana. She was the daughter of John McNutt and Emma F. Hughes. (Scalf Family History, page 168)

Iva McNutt Scalf was found on the 1920 census in the home of her parents. No children were reported from this marriage in Scalf Family History and none appear on the census of 1920 in the home with Iva.

Shortly after the marriage of Charles and Iva, Charles registered for the draft of WWI.

Obituary of Beulah Scalf:IN

Funeral services for Beulah Scalf, 74 Mulberry St., Rising Sun, will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8, from Humphrey Taylor Funeral Home. Mrs. Helen Ray will be organist, Rev. Jerry Wheeler will be officiating minister and burial will be in Cedar Hedge Cemetery.

Mrs. Scalf was born April 19, 1899, in Boone County, Kentucky. She died at Terrace View Nursing Home Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 5, where she had been taken for therapy treatment.

She suffered a stroke in her home several days ago and was a patient in Dearborn County Hospital until Monday.

She was a retired post office employee and a member of the Eastern Star, Business and Professional Women’s Club and the United Methodist Church.

She retired Feb 28, 1969, after 27 years in the post office. Prior to her post office employment, she worked for three years as an operator for Ohio River Telephone Co.

She also devoted several hours each week volunteer work at Dearborn County Hospital. Survivors include two sons, Max E. Scalf, Hamilton, Ohio, and George Lance Smith, Aurora, four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and one brother, Louis Ryle, Boone County, Kentucky.

Visitation at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. today (Thursday).

OBITUARY:

Raymond Leroy Scalf, 72, a recent resident of Naperville, Ill., died Sunday, Aug. 23, at Edward Hospital in Naperville after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Scalf was born Aug. 30, 1919, in Rising Sun. He was a self-employed carpenter for many years and also worked from 1963 until 1980 as a foreman at the Detroit diesel Allison Division of General Motors Corporation in Indianapolis and was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Rising Sun. Mr. Scalf enjoyed spending time at his homes in Rising Sun and Roseland, Fla.

He is survived by one son, Donald Scalf, of Naperville; three grandsons, Thomas of Davenport, Iowa, and Timothy and Theodore, both of Naperville; three sisters, Norma Shofner of Rockford, Ill., Almeda Rice of Rt. Wayne, and Bette McAllister of Rising Sun.

He was preceded in death by his wife Donna in 1985, his parents and many brothers and sisters.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 29 at the Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. Memorials in Mr. Scalf’s name may be made to the Rising Sun Fire Department. Scalf Family History, pg. 168, states that William married Minnie Wingham March 3, 1901 in Trimble County, Kentucky. She was the daughter of Benjamin Wingham and Virginia Perry. Seven children are listed in Scalf Family History. Minnie Wingham was the niece of Lillie B. Wingham, wife of Robert E. Scalf.

Seven children were found on the 1910, 1920 and 1930 census records. The family was living in Trimble County, Kentucky in 1910, Ripley County, Indiana by 1920, and Jennings County, Indiana in 1930. Scalf Family History, page 167 lists Hugh Scalf as a child of William and Minnie that died young.

William Avery was considered by many to be an attractive man with a wonderful singing voice. His grandson, Harold L. Scalf, shared the story that another woman at church often made eyes at him in a flirtatious manner. One Sunday after services, this woman was bold enough to say to his wife, Minnie, You are so fortunate to be married to such a good looking man! Minnie, who was known for her directness, replied, You may think he’s good looking, but only I get to share his bed!

According to family members, William Avery suffered from diabetes and later in life had to have the lower portion of one of his legs amputated.

Barbara Sue Scalf, granddaughter of William and Minnie, shared the following incident that shares more insight into Minnie’s personality:

  After Papaw [William Avery] died, Mamaw [Minnie] was living with us in Columbus on Lafayette Avenue. Just a block away was a city bus line and one afternoon she caught the downtown bus. Aunt Gertie was visiting and she, Daddy and Momma [Harold Everett and Myrtle Elizabeth] were sitting at the kitchen table and I was working at the sink.
  Suddenly, the door flew open and in came Mamaw. She stormed past all of us without saying a word or response to our greetings. In a few minutes she came into the kitchen. Perhaps I might say she huffed into the kitchen. It was plain to see she was angry over something. Pointing her finger at all of us she said, I’m going to tell all of you something and I don’t want one word of argument. I did something today and it was my decision to make.
  Daddy said, All right, Mother, what did you do? She replied, All my life I have hated my name. Minnie Myrtle is a terrible name and today I changed it.
  Daddy was strugglilng to retain his compossure and not insult her by laughing. But then he asked her, Okay, Mother. What did you change your name to? With her hands on her hips she said, I am now Minnie Mabel!
  That was all it took. Daddy couldn’t contain himself any longer and burst into gales of laughter. What she had done was go to the post office, the bank, and a few other places and told them she was now Minnie Mabel Scalf. It lasted for a few days and then she was back to letting herself be called Minnie Myrtle.

Harold E. Scalf, son of William and Minnie married Myrtle E. Beshear (no date given). Hilda Scalf, daughter of William and Minnie was born March 9, 1907 and married Thomas Harley Spann (listed as Spam on pg. 168 Scalf Family History) March 14, 1923 in Jefferson County, Indiana.

Obituary of William A. Scalf:

William A. Scalf, 68, of Elizabethtown, died at 4:15 o’clock Wednesday afternoon at the home of his son, Harold E. Scalf, 1303 Lafayette avenue.

Mr. Scalf was born in Canaan, the son of William and Mary Scalf. He married in 1901 to Minnie Wingham, and was a member of the Elizabethtown Methodist Church, the Masonic lodge, Red Men lodge and Pocahontas.

Survivors ar the wife, Mrs. Minnie M. Scalf; the son; five daughters, Mrs. Hilda Rich of Columbus, Mrs. Lela Perkins of Butlerville, Mrs. Iva Mae Wilbur and Mrs. Gertrude Burns, both of Elizabethtown, and Mrs. Virginia Burkman of Indianapolis; a brother, Thomas Scalf of Tecumseh, Okla.; a sister, Mrs. Nora Knipe of Indianapolis; 22 grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. One daugher, Mrs. Maude I. Paugh, preceded him in death. Four grandsons, are serving in the armed forces.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon at the Elizabethtown Methodist church. Burial will be made at Garland Brook cemetery. The Elizabethtown Masonic lodge will conduct graveside rites.

The casket will be open after 6 o’clock this evening at the Hathaway funeral home, until the time of the services at the church Saturday.

Harold Everett Hap Scalf, son of William Avery Scalf and Minnie Wingham, was born April 22, 1902 in Indiana and died June 12, 1961 in Columbus. Indiana. Harold married Myrtle Elizabeth Betty Beshear December 13, 1930 in Carrollton, Kentucky. After Harold’s death, Betty married John Homer Roberts December 1, 1973. Betty died March 20, 1990.

According to Betty’s verbal account to grandson Stephen L. Scalf, on the morning of June 12, 1961 Harold and Betty had been putting up hay when he began experiencing pain and asked to be taken to the hospital. A friend drove them with Harold and Betty riding in the back seat. They had just pulled up to the emergency room entrance when Harold looked at Betty, told her he loved her, and then suddenly straightened out, lifting his rear out of the seat. When he collapsed back down into the seat, he was gone.

Harold Lloyd Bud Scalf, son of Harold Everett Scalf and Myrtle E. Beshear, was born August 22, 1931. (Link to Harold L Scalf birth certificate)
Harold married Evelyn E. Brower December 12, 1951 in Idaho Falls, Idaho. He died November 1, 2021 in Lexington, Kentucky.
Evelyn was born January 31, 1931 in Blackfoot, Idaho to George Stephen and Kate (Locke) Brower.

Bud was a deep-thinker who skipped a grade in school, he was so intellectually advanced. As a young boy he frequently visited a Baptist minister who taught him the gospel and instilled in him a deep love for Jesus Christ that endured throughout his life.

Bud would frequently get lost in thought and could be slow and methodical about things, which led his siblings to tease him by calling him Lightning. Naturally, Bud hated this. One time the family was piling into the car and Bud was the last one. After being called Lightning again, Bud said he forgot something in the house and went back to get it. After several minutes, someone went to hurry Bud along and found him sitting in a chair, waiting - his revenge for being teased.

When Bud was 17, his father was at work and expressed his displeasure with some of the things happening at the church he was attending. A friend, Ernie Lykins, introduced him to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the entire family eventually converted.

This event indirectly led to Bud finding his sweetheart, Evelyn. The story goes like this:

A young woman came from Idaho to visit her boyfriend who was serving a mission for the Church in Columbus, Indiana. During her visit she stayed at Bud’s parents’ home in nearby Elizabethtown. After dinner one day, Bud was at the sink washing dishes when this young woman looked at him and said, I know this girl who would be just perfect for you!

Bud enlisted in the Navy as an electronics technician and was stationed in Oakland, California where he repaired equipment for Naval aircraft. Over the past several months, Bud had continued contact with this young woman, who eventually provided Evelyn’s address and Bud began exchanging letters with Evelyn.

Their affection for each other grew to the point Bud decided to take leave and visit her. He had arranged to catch a hop on a military mail flight from Oakland to Utah, but a winter storm hit and the aircraft crashed, never arriving in Oakland. Undeterred, Bud hitchhiked all the way to Blackfoot, Idaho. Evelyn was working in a shop downtown when a friend came into the store and told her a fine-looking young man in a Navy uniform was walking up the street. Evelyn went out and met him face-to-face for the first time. The couple spent the day together. That evening, Bud took Evelyn on a walk on her father’s farm and asked her to marry him. The next day he began his long trek back to Oakland.

The couple continued writing letters and were able to meet again at the Church’s general conference in Salt Lake City, where Harold presented her with an engagement ring. The third time they met was to get married.

After the wedding, Evelyn joined Bud in Oakland. The young couple lived in a quonset hut and were soon joined by their first child, Danny.

Bud then left the Navy and moved to Salt Lake City to pursue his degree in electrical engineering from the University of Utah. During that time their second son, Robert, was born. As an undergraduate student, Bud helped bring Utah’s public television station, KUED, on air. He would install equipment at the antennae site up on a mountain, and then drive back to the station to make sure everything was working properly.

After graduation, Bud took a job with General Electric in Syracuse, New York where three more children, Elizabeth, Stephen, and Mary, were added to the family. Bud then took employement with Magnavox in Fort Wayne, Indiana where their last child, Becca, was born. Bud eventually moved to Indianapolis to work for RCA, and finally to Pocatello, Idaho where he completed his full-time employment with AMI Semiconductor.

Harold died on November 1, 2021 in Lexington, Kentucky after suffering a stroke while Evelyn and he were visiting their son, Stephen, in nearby Carlisle, Kentucky.

OBITUARY:

Harold Lloyd Scalf, 90, passed away peacefully with his wife at his side at Bluegrass Care Navigators in Lexington, Kentucky on Monday, November 1, 2021. He was born in Elizabethtown, Indiana on August 22, 1931 to Harold Everett and Myrtle Elizabeth Beshear Scalf, the eldest of six children.

Harold served in the Navy for four years during the Korean War as an aircraft electronics technician. While still in the Navy, he married his wife of 68 years, Evelyn Elizabeth Brower, on December 12, 1952. After receiving an honorable discharge, Harold earned a degree in electrical engineering, graduating from the University of Utah with high honors. During his studies, he was instrumental in bringing Utah’s educational television channel, KUED, on air. After graduation, he accepted employment at General Electric in Syracuse, New York. He was later employed by Magnavox in Fort Wayne, Indiana where he did extensive work for the Navy’s Sonobuoy program, with some of his microcircuit designs being featured in IEEE magazine. He completed his professional career with American Microcircuits in Pocatello, Idaho.

Harold developed a deep love for Jesus Christ early in life through his visits with his beloved Baptist minister. At age 17, he joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he always remained a faithful member, including serving a mission in Beardstown, Illinois with Evelyn.

In addition to his wife, Harold is survived by four of his six children: Daniel (Elizabeth) Scalf of Peoria, Arizona, Stephen (Cynthia) Scalf of Carlisle, Kentucky, Mary Neal of Pocatello, Idaho, and Rebecca (Theodore) Tateoka of Hazelton, Idaho; 20 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three siblings: Susie Jones, Judy (David) Lee, and William Scalf.

He was preceded in death by children Robert Wesley Scalf and Elizabeth Ann Scalf; brothers Robert Alan Scalf and Richard Dean Scalf.

His family will treasure his memory as one who deeply loved his Savior, Jesus Christ, and who always strove to live his life in a way that reflected that love.

Visitation will be at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 920 Clintonville Rd, Paris, Kentucky at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 6 with the service beginning at 11:00 a.m. (Eastern time)

Burial will be on Monday, November 8 at 3:00 p.m. in Lindenwood Cemetery in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

1. Daniel Scalf was born December 29, 1953 in California married first Gretchen Rust April 23, 1973 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Gretchen was born December 18, 1954 in Indiana to Martin Frederick and Frances Irene Rust. Prior to their divorce in 1998, Daniel and Gretchen had four children:
   
   1. Andrea Scalf - born July 16, 1973 in Utah.
   2. Jeremy Scalf - born December 25, 1977 in Washington.
      Jeremy married Jennifer Lawson December 11, 1998 in Stafford, Virginia. Jennifer was born November 30, 1978 in California.
      Jeremy and Jennifer had one son:
      
      1. Lorenz Scalf - born October 25, 2015 in New Jersey.
   3. Emily Scalf - born August 14, 1983 in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
      Emily married John Hilldrup September 9, 2005 in Stafford, Virginia.
      John was born November 25, 1981 in Virginia.
   4. Michelle Scalf - born April 3, 1987 in Hawaii.
      Michelle married James Everett August 24, 2007 in Virginia.
      James was born March 28, 1985 in Virginia.
   
   Daniel married second Laurie Call June 2, 1988 in Fairfax, Virginia. Laurie was born April 29, 1962 to Don and Laree Call. Prior to their divorce, Daniel and Laurie had one daughter.
   
   1. Mikayla Scalf - born February 7, 2001 in Arizona.
   Daniel married third Elizabeth. They had one son:
   
   1. Sterling Scalf - born September 16, 2018 in Arizona.


2. Robert Wesley Scalf was born March 17, 1956 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He married Stacey Leigh Curtis January 19, 1979 in Kensisngton, Maryland.
   Stacey was born Agust 15, 1958 in San Jose, Califoria to Tom and (?) Curtis.
   

   ;Rob and Stacey met while they were attending college at Brigham Young University. One day before they got married, they visited Stacey’s sister, Debbie, who had a small child. Rob was bouncing the child on his knees, and said the accompanying rhyme, Little Robin Redbreast sat upon a pole. Wiggle-waggle, wiggle-waggle, popped in the hole. Debbie and Stacey stared at Rob, dumbstruck, and finally asked,Where did you learn that! Rob explained that he had always known it, that his mother had bounced him like that when he was little.
   
   That's impossible! they told him. Our dad made that up!
   
   Rob called his mom and asked about it. It turns out that Stacey's father, Tom Curtis, had attended the same congregation as Rob's parents when they lived in Oakland, California and the two couples had become good friends. After Bud and Evelyn moved to Utah and Rob had been born, Tom came for a visit. While holding Rob on his knees, he bounced him and said that same rhyme. Robert like it so much that Evelyn continued using it.
   
   It is a small world, indeed!

   
   Rob and Stacey had four children:
   
   1. Kavin Scalf was born January 22, 1980 in Virgina.
      Kavin married first Phoebe Wansley November 30, 2001 in Pierce County, Washington. Phoebe was born July 18, 1952 in Jacksonville, Florida to Willie and Emma Ruth Wansley.
      Kavin and Pheobe divorced in 2011. No children from this union.
      
      Kavin married second Theresa Goetze September 7, 2011 in Germany. Kavin and Theresa have two children:
      
      1. Marie Scalf - born February 7, 2017.
      2. [Boy] Scalf - born 2022.
      Kavin served in the U.S. Army. He met Theresa while stationed in Germany.
   2. Kalen Scalf was born March 31, 1982 in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
      Kalen married Lauren S. Pefanis July 29, 2003 in St. Joseph County, Indiana.
      Lauren was born in 1981 in Indiana to Peter G. and Patricia Jean (Sullivan) Pefanis.
   3. Ian Scalf was born February 7, 1989 in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
      Ian served in the U.S. Army.
   4. Kate Elizabeth Scalf was born Oct 12, 1992 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

   The following was submitted by Rob’s brother, Stephen Scalf:

   Robert was highly intelligent and a gifted musician. He played piano and guitar. He was also quite a good artist. His friends appreciated his wonderful sense of humor.
   
   At nearly the age of 40, Robert achieved a life-long goal of being admitted into medical school. After graduating and during his residency, one day a driver ran a stop sign and struck Rob’s car in the driver’s door. Rob was knocked unconscious and suffered a severe concussion. Although Rob externally appeared to be completely healed, he began suffering migraines so intense they invariable caused vomiting. This happened so frequently that the stomach acid began dissolving his molars. Rob was prescribed a narcotic pain reliever, and is so often the case, he eventually became addicted.
   
   Rob was sent to rehabilitation but later relapsed, so he had to be dismissed from his residency program. His addiction also resulted in divorce and separation from his children. He had lost everything he loved and continued his downward spiralAfter he was caught forging prescriptions, he ended up in prison.
   
   After his release, Rob began drinking heavily.While staying on a friend’s boat in Seattle, Washington and broke into a cabin that contained the friend’s liquor. Rob stole a case and went on a drinking binge. His body was found nearly a week later in a public park in Seattle. The coroner explained when Rob ran out of alcohol after being drunk for so long, the sobering process caused cascading organ failure, which ultimately resulted in death.
   
   I know sharing this may cause some family members pain - and perhaps feelings of shame. (You’re not supposed to air your dirty laundry in public.) I loved my brother and looked up to him. Growing up, I wanted to be just like him. Rob did not cause his own migraines, he did not intend to become addicted to the pain pills that were prescribed by a doctor. He did not wish any of this on himself.
   
   Although this tragedy has left its scar on so many lives - especially those of his children - I hope that by sharing this it will help them (and others who have also had addicted loved ones) to see past the pain and trust in a merciful God who will work out all things to perfection in the end.

3. Elizabeth Ann Scalf was born July 26,1959 in Syracuse, New York. She died April 3, 1974 in Monticello, Indiana.
   

   Like her brother, Robert, Liz was a talented musician. She was already performing challenging classical piano pieces by the age of 12.
   
   At the age of 14, Elizabeth was killed during the horrible tornado outbreak of April 3, 1974. She was a passenger in a VW Bus as part of a church youth group that was returning to Fort Wayne, Indiana after visiting a church historical site in Nauvoo, Illinois. As they were crossing a bridge in Monticello, Indiana the bus was picked up by the tornado and thrown into the Tippecanoe River. The driver and four girls, including Elizabeth were killed. Miraculously, one girl survived.
   
   Liz's older brother, Robert, was part of that same youth group. The car he was in got stopped at a red light, which saved them from being on the bridge when the tornado struck.
   
   Liz is buried in Lindenwood Cemetery, Fort Wayne, Indiana.

4. Stephen Scalf was born May 2, 1961 in New York. Steve married Cynthia Rueschhoff 4 Nov 1983 in Kensington, Maryland
   Cindy was born November, 29 1960 in California to Donald Stephen and Mary Louise (Wurtz) Rueschhoff.
   

   Steve relates:

   “I was able to retain some very early childhood memories.. For example, when I was barely two my folks were getting rid of an metal bedframe and had it leaning against a living roomwall. I accidentally pulled it down on top of me and cut my forehead open. Those kinds of injuries were pretty frequent throughout my childhood. I was an accident-proned kid, with several trips to the doctor to get stiched back up.
   
   “I used to have a fairly bad speech impediment. Mom would spend hours with me, making me read Dr. Seuss’s Fox in Socks with my teeth clenched together so I had to carefully form my words. When I was in first grade, my teacher told Mom that she was pretty sure I could read - she could see my lips moving when it was other kids’ turn to read - but when she called on me, I always needed help. Mom kept me home from school one day and worked with me. I don’t know if I felt I needed permission, or was just shy about my ability, but by the end of the day I was able to read, no problem. Mom instilled in me a deep love for books that has stuck with me my whole life.
   
   “I got good grades in school, worked hard at learning the piano, and I really did try to behave and obey my parents and teachers. But they didn’t really diagnose hyperactivity back then and my energy levels were always pretty much off the chart. This condition contributed to my being socially awkward - something I didn’t start outgrowing until my senior year of high school.
   
   “I was always very patriotic. I remember that as an 8-year-old, every federal holiday I would put on my Cub Scout uniform, put our flag in its bracket on the front porch post, and then make the whole family go outside and say the Pledge of Allegiance.
   
   “Our house in Fort Wayne sat on a 1.5 acre lot. We had a very large garden and in the summer spent hours pulling weeds and picking vegetables. By the time I was 12, my two older brothers ‘lost interest’ in mowing our huge lawn and the role fell to me. In spite of the many chores, I was a pretty lazy kid. When I was about 14, one hot summer day we were in the garden and I was complaining more than I was working. Mom finally got fed up, grabbed me by the arm and started dragging me towards the house. I thought I was about to get a whipping, but instead, Mom took me into the garage where there were so many shelves full of canning jars. Mom asked me when the last time was that we bought vegetables from the stores. Never. She pointed out that we relied on the garden for much of our food. Something clicked in my mind. I began taking more pride in my work and pretty much took over the entire garden starting the following summer. I saved my money and purchased a self-propelled lawn mower so I could keep the lawn looking better. I’ve always been grateful for having been taught this valuable lesson.
   
   “I was never very good at sports. I didn’t hit my growth spurt until I was in high school. At the end of ninth grade I was 4 ft. 11 in. and weighed about 90 lbs. Three months later I was 5 ft. 6 in. and weighed about 120 lbs. That kind of growth left me too skinny and too awkward. However, towards the end of my time in high school, I discovered I was a decent runner - particularly at the 880 yd (now the 800 m) race. The first time I broke two minutes, I don’t know who was more surprised, me or the coach.
   
   “After graduation, I served a two-year mission for our church in Germany. I loved every minute of it. German came easily and the German orderliness and cleanliness... it felt like I had finally found where I belong. The opportunity to spend two years focusing on my relationship to God and serving others set a pattern for the rest of my life.
   
   “About a month after I returned hom from Germany, I attended one of our church’s young adult activities, where I met Cindy for the first time. She lived nearly 80 miles away in Terre Haute, but regardless of the distance about six months later she was all I could think about, even though we had’t even started dating yet. There was another young adult activity in March 1983. As soon as I entered the building we saw each other and things just clicked. We spent the whole day together and by that evening we were holding hands. I visited her and met her parents on April 3 and by mid-May had asked her to marry me.
   
   “We got married seven months later. And just two weeks after our wedding I left for Basic Training. My plan was to stay in the Army for four years and use the Army College Fund to complete my education. It didn't turn out that way, though. 25 years I retired at the rank of Command Sergeant Major. A couple of highlights: I spent three years going to Vietnam and assisting in the accounting for those still missing from that war. This included finding aircraft crash sites and remote burial sites. This was truly a unique honor. And then, as the Command Sergeant Major I deployed with my battalion to Iraq. Although my rigid emphasis on maintaining the highest standards of conduct and discipline made me rather unpopular with the troops, every last one of them returned home alive. Although I can’t take full credit for that, I’d like to think my efforts at least contributed to that result.”

   A miraculous event:

   Steve's daily schedule in Iraq normally started about 6 a.m. and ended around midnight. One night he was just finishing up when the thought occurred, I’ll be retiring someday soon, and we need to think about where we want to settle. Steve turned his computer back on and started searching the Internet for a small farm (about 10-15 acres) near Fort Wayne, where he grew up. To start the discussion, he sent an email with a link to a property to Cindy, who was in Hawaii where Steve’s unit was headquartered. Cindy sent back, It looks nice, but it’s kind of expensive. We won’t be able to afford much of a house. Do you mind if we expand our search to include Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, and Kentucky, as well as Indiana?
   
   That included literally thousands of properties. About a week later Steve stumbled across a property outside Carlisle, Kentucky. Something about it just felt right. He copied the link to the listing to email to Cindy with the subject line: Honey, take a look at this. He hit Send and two seconds later, the same email showed up in his inbox. Confused, he wondered, Did I accidentally send it to myself?
   
   It turns out from literally opposite sides of the planet, Cindy had sent the exact same message with a link to the exact same property within a couple of seconds of Steve’s. The more they looked into it, the better it felt. They bought the property without ever seeing it, and this is is how they ended up in little town Carlisle, Kentucky, population about 1,800.
   
   But the miracle continues!
   
   One reason Steve felt attracted to Kentucky was so he could continue researching his Scalf family genealogy. A few months after arriving in Kentucky, he was searching his database for relatives’ burial sites near Carlisle. He found one listing in Paris, Kentucky, just 20 miles away. Searching the details on that individual, Steve learned his maternal great-great-grandfather had lived in Carlisle, literally two blocks away from where they were renting while their house was being constructed, and at least six of his children had been born in Carlisle.

    One more coincidence:

   That John Scalf, Sr.’s wife was Edeah Carlisle and Steve and Cindy ended up in Carlisle, Kentucky may not seem all that odd. However, when Robert Scalf (son of John Scalf, Sr.) first arrived in Kentucky from Virginia, he settled on Goose Creek. The property Steve and Cindy purchase is on Goose Creek Road (not the same Goose Creek, but it still left Steve feeling a strong connection to his ancestors who had also migrated to Kentucky.)

   Steve and Cindy had four children:
   
   
   1. Katherine Scalf - born July 29, 1986 in Berlin, Germany. Katie married Nikki Forte.

      Katie was always strong-willed. She had just started crawling and decided she wanted to play with Daddy's stereo. Steve watched as she crawled in that direction and warned, No-no, Katie! Don’t do it! Katie kept crawling and then, watching Dad carefully for his reaction, slowly started reaching for a knob. Dad repeatedly warned, No-no! When Katie ignored Daddy and touched the knob anyway, Steve took two fingers and lightly smacked the back of her hand. Katie bellered in anger and slapped Steve across the face. Katie’s parents decided right then and there that instead of trying to break her will, they just needed to instill in her a strong sense of right and wrong.
      
      Katie was also tough. She was barely two years old when Steve was transferred from Germany to Fort Carson, Colorado. Steve and Cindy bought bunkable twin-sized beds, keeping them bunked while Sam was still in a crib, and had Katie sleeping on the bottom bunk. One day during nap time (Katie never really managed to take a nap) Steve and Cindy heard a loud BOOM coming from the childrens’ room followed by Sam’s sqeals of delight and laughter. Several seconds, another loud BOOM and more laughter. Mom and Dad went to see what was going on, only to find Katie climbing up onto the top bunk, standing up, and then jumping down onto the floor.
      
      Whether instilled by her parents or simply her nature, Katie had a strong sense of fairness. One day her folks got a call from school saying that Katie had gotten into a fight. They were perplexed. That just didn’t sound like Katie. It turned out she had witnessed a very large kid getting physical with his (ex-)girlfriend and was about to hit her. Katie stepped between them and took the punch. She then shoved the boy aside and started dressing him down verbally. Steve’s response to the school: We're not going to discipline her. She saw someone who needed protection and she provided it.
      
      In spite of her diminutive size (5 ft 3 in), Katie is a powerhouse. She earned her black belt in Taekwondo at age 15 at Kukkiwon (the world Taekwondo headquarters) in Seoul, Korea. She also learned Jujitsu. With her protective nature, her strong sense of right and wrong, and her powerful physical abilities, her parents weren’t surprised when Katie became a police officer in Lexington, Kentucky.
      
      Katie is an outstanding artist, a talent that seems to run in the Scalf family. She is also a graphic designer and a creator of websites.

   
   
   2. Samuel Scalf - born November 9, 1987 in Berlin, Germany. Sam met Phuong while both were attending college in Hawaii. The couple married January 15, 2011 in Oakland, California.
      Phuong was born March 29, 1990 in Vietnam.
      Sam and Phuong have three sons:
      
      1. Daniel Scalf - born October 25, 2012 in South Korea.
      2. Albert Scalf - born June 12, 2016.
      3. [Not Born Yet] - born December, 2023.

      Sam had a very independent nature. When he wanted to ride a bicycle, he didn't want anyone watching him. He just kept at it on his own until he got it.
      
      It was the same thing with playing piano. Sam never had a piano lesson - he didn't even want one from his dad. He taught himself how to read music and actually performed a challenging piece for a talent show.
      
      Sam’s intelligence reflected in his sense of humor. Each year his teachers commented how Sam would say things none of the other kids understood (It goes right over their heads) but that the teachers thought were hilarious. But his intelligence was coupled with a personality type that had no patience for busy work. Sam hated doing things simply out of blind obedience. If he didn't see a good reason for the requirement, he tended to ignore it. This applied to homework assignments. One of his high school teachers said, I don’t know what to do with Sam. He refuses to do his homework, but when he takes the tests, he gets the highest grade in the class.
      
      Sam had an easy-going nature that helped him get along with others. Before serving a two-year mission for the Church in Sapporo, Japan, he attended a mission preparation class. The family lived in Hawaii at the time and all the other youth preparing for missions were all locals, mostly Samoan. Knowing these local boys might be a little rough on the lone haole, a concerned church leader quietly observed the group. I was truly surprised to see a blonde-haired, blue-eyed kid fitting right in, like there was no difference! he said.
      
      Sam followed in his father's footsteps, first getting married, and then joining the Army. Like his father, he started out in military intelligence, but changed over to Information Technology. After leaving the Army, Sam worked as a military contractor at Fort Huachuca, Arizona working IT for classified systems. He was then hired by Microsoft and relocated his family to Redmond, Washington.
      
      

   
   
   3. Sarah Scalf - born October 16, 1990 in Colorado. She married James Carlton October 10, 2009 in Crestwood, Kentucky
      Jim was born June 4, 1983 in California to Jayce and Kathy (Bywater) Carlton.
      Sarah and Jim met at a young adult congregation in Lexington, Kentucky. After they married, the lived in Paris, Kentucky. Jim was then hired by a company in Louisiana as an IT specialist so they relocated to Sulphur. Jim was subsequently hired by another company in Salt Lake City, Utah so the family moved to Eagle Mountain, Utah.
      1. Iris Carlton - born December 1, 2010 in Kentucky.
      2. Lily Carlton - born June 6, 2013 in Kentucky.
      3. Alanna Carlton - born October 30, 2015 in Louisiana. She is named after a character created by author Tamora Pierce.
      4. Caleb Carlton - born December 4, 2017 in Louisiana.
   
   

   Sarah was an adorable, blonde child who easily won everyone’s heart. It wasn’t unusual for elderly women to sneak Sarah a bag of candy at church.
   
   She was a climber. When she was still just crawling, she would climb up rock walls. Sarah was an escape artist. She took great pleasure demonstrating how she could climb out of her crib. When Cindy had to go down into the basement to do laundry, she would bolt and chain the front door. When she came back upstairs, she’d find a chair dragged over, the chain unlatched, and the door partially open. A neighbor might telephone, Just wanted to let you know... Sarah got out. She's taken off her diaper and is sitting in a pothole full of water. Or, In case you’re looking for Sarah, she just walked in our front door, went to the pantry and got a box of cereal, plopped down in front of the TV and started watching cartoons.
   
   When she was just two, she pulled open kitchen drawers and used them as a ladder to climb up on the counter, then got on the microwave to get on top of the refrigerator where Mom was keeping the Halloween candy to limit the amount of sweets the kids ate. Steve found her up there, helping herself to the candy and got her down.
   
   Dad: Sarah, was that being good or was it naughty? Sarah: It was naughty. Dad:What did you think would happen if you got caught? Sarah: I’d get a spanking. Dad: If you knew it was naughty and you would get a spanking, why did you do it? Sarah: It was worth it! Sarah never met a stranger. After walking with Cindy to take the older kids to the bus stop for school, Sarah would wave to everyone driving to work and call out, Good morning! Have a nice day! On a road trip, the family stopped at a rest area for a quick break. As everyone got out of the car, Sarah was suddenly missing. Her parents found her several cars down, petting a dog and talking to its owners. As they collected Sarah, they reminded her, What did we teach you about talking to strangers? Sarah replied, These aren’t strangers. They’re my friends, Todd and Becky!
   
   Sarah was constantly singing, making up little songs no matter what she was doing. because of her cheerful nature, every night when Dad tucked her into bed, he sang You Are My Sunshine, and then Sarah would put her arms around his neck, pull him close, and give him butterfly kisses on his cheek.
   
   Some of Sarah's teachers couldn't cope with her talkative, friendly, helpful nature, especially coupled with her short attention span. Sarah was easily distracted. And when something caught her attention, whatever she had been doing previously seemed to slip her mind.
   
   Her cheerful nature came combined a her brilliant intellect. Sarah had a quick wit, especially when it came to puns and wordplay.
   
   Sarah wanted to learn to play piano, so her father taught her the basics. A short time later, Sarah was playing Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata.
   
   As an adult, Sarah still loves singing and has participated in community choirs.

   
   
   4. Stephen Max Scalf - born June 30, 1994 in California. He married Leigha Nelson May 20, 2017 in Crestwood, Kentucky. Max and Leigha met in the same young adult congregation in Lexington where his older sister, Sarah, met her husband.
      Leigha was born December 18, 1993 in Texas. Max and Leigha have one son:
      1. Harold Harry Scalf - born January 10, 2023 in Connecticut.

      Max was a special gift from God. His mother, Cindy, had experienced a horrible miscarriage after Sarah was born that nearly ended her life. Her preganancy with Sarah had also been difficult, with Cindy hospitalized the last couple of weeks with dangerously high blood pressure. Cindy decided she was done having children and got rid of all her baby things.
      
      During supper one evening Cindy suddenly said, There's an empty chair. Her husband, Steve, was puzzled by this. The table had come with six chairs, and there were five of them. Of course there was an empty chair. He asked, Um... Do you want me to get rid of it?
      
      Then the miracle happened.
      
      Cindy said, No. We're going to have another child. He's going to have red hair and brown eyes. We're going to name him Stephen Maxwell Scalf, but we're going to call him Max.
      
      Throughout the entire pregnancy, Cindy would talk to Max, calling him by name. She never doubted, and already knew him.
      
      Max came home from the hospital on Saturday, and the following day his father, Steve, had to leave for a 20-week military training course. He came back for a litle over a month and had to leave for another 20-week course. When Steve got home, Max looked at him like he wasn't sure who that guy was supposed to be. But seeing the joy on his mother's face, he reached out and went into his daddy's arms.
      
      Max had just started cutting teeth and one day while being nursed, he bit down and Cindy gave out a little cry of pain. Max sobbed. The next time he went to nurse, he was very hesitant and kept checking to make sure Mommy was OK.
      
      When Max was about 18 months old he dropped his sipper cup and a little liquid squirted out onto the floor. Steve said, Oops! Let me go get something to clean that up. He went to the bathroom and got a rag, came back and the spill was gone. Confused, he went into the kitchen to see if Cindy had cleaned it up. Instead, he saw Max carefully hanging a dishtowel neatly back over the cabinet door where he had found it.
      
      Max is extremely intelligent. He was doing double digit addition and subtraction in his head even before he started Kindergarten. Steve tested him one day and asked, How old will you be when I am 50? Max had to subtract Steve's age from 50 and then add the result to his own age. He came up with the answer right away. Steve tried different combinations, making sure Max had to borrow when subtracting. Again, no hesitation. Finally, Steve decided to see if Max could go to a third digit and asked, How old will I be when you are 83? Max shot back, You’ll be dead!
      
      Max inherited his family's musical abilities. He played french horn in high school. During his senior year, there were tryouts for the district band - the best musicians from several surrounding counties. Two days before tryouts, Max decided he wanted to play the euphonium (baritone horn) which he had never played before. Of the several euphonium players who tried out, Max came in second.
      
      Max graduated as valedictorian of his class and earned a full-tuition scholarship from the University of Kentucky. He interrupted his education to serve a two-year mission for the Church in Korea. But this didn't seem to slow him down. After graduation he was accepted into a joint masters/doctorate degree program at Yale University for early cellular biology.

Robert married Marilyn Maxine Conrad May 29, 1958. She was born January 26, 1934 in Oaklandon, Indiana, the daughter of John Henry and Shirley (Adams) Conrad.
Marilyn was married first to James Ray Keaton April 8, 1951. Marilyn and James had two children: 1. Katherine E. Keaton - b. 1952 m. Melvin Lykins; and 2. John Ray Keaton - b. September 9, 1953, m. Jill Kathryn Kuhlman April 15, 1973.
Marilyn died June 12, 2005.

Robert A. Scalf, 61, died Tuesday at Richard L. Roudebush Medical Center in Indianapolis. He was a resident of Greenwood.

He was born Sept. 20, 1933, in Columbus[Geneva, Jennings County]. His parents were Harold Scalf and Myrtle Elizabeth (Beshear[sp]) Scalf. He married Marilyn Conrad May 29, 1958, in Indianapolis. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, David Scalf of Indianapolis, and John Keaton of Greenfield, a daugher, Kathy Lykins of Columbus; three brothers, Harold Scalf of Idaho, Richard Scalf of Columbus, and William Scalf of Michigan; two sisters, Sue Jones of Cedar City, Utah, and Judy Lee of Canab, Utah; and eight grandchildren. He also was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Alan[sp] Scalf.

He was a graduate of Columbus High School and Indiana University, where he received a bachelor's degree and doctorate in law. He also attended Butler and Brigham Young universities.

He was an attorney in Greenwood for 28 years, retiring in 1990.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Franklin.

He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Bishop Joseph Farley will conduct a service at 11 a.m. Saturday at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Franklin. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at Wilson St. Pierre Greenwood Chapel.

Richard Scalf - Washington Street

Richard D. Scalf, 76, of Washington Street, died at 5:40 p.m. Fridaty, December 7, 2012, at Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.

He was born in Bartholomew County, August 29, 1936, the son of the late Harold E. Scalf and M. Elizabeth Betty Beshear Scalf. He married Joyce A. Bradley on March 6, 1971, who survives.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He retired from Cummins Engine Company in 1996 after 40 years of service. He was a member and past president of the Diesel Workers Union. He was a graduate of Indiana University and a volunteer tutor at McDowell Adult Education Center and Big Brother.

In addition to his wife, Richard is survived by his sons, Richard D. Rick (Priscilla) Scalf, Jr. of Columbus, and Michael E. Scalf of Houston, Texas; a daughter, Laura K. (Dan) Klepper of Franklin, Tenn.; brothers, Harold L. (Evelyn) Scalf of Chubbuck[sp], Idaho, and William E. (Colleen) Scalf of Rockford, Mich.' sisters, Barbara Sue (Kerry) Jones of Cedar City, Utah, and Judy (David) Lee of Kanab, Uatah; and grandchildren, Richard Rick Scalf III of Columbus, Virginia A. Ginger Scalf of Columbus and Erica K. Scalf of Amarillo, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Robert A. Scalf.

Funeral services will be conducted a 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 3030 30th St., Columbus with Bishop Denton Haight presiding. Joyce Ann Scalf, 83, died at 5:29 p.m. on April 7, 2017, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.

She was born on August 17, 1933, in Columbus, Indiana, to H. Harold and Beulah (Blocher) Bradley. She married Richard D. Scalf on March 6, 1971.

Joyce was retired from Sears and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was a 60-year member of Beta Sigma Phi, Alpha Nu Master chpater and served in all its office. She also volunteered at the Columbus Visitors Center as a tour guide and at the Senior Center.

The funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 14, 2017 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3030 30th St., Columbus. Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home. Burial will be at Springer Cemetery.

Barbara Sue Scalf, daughter of Harold Everett Scalf and Myrtle Elizabeth Beshear, was born November 4, 1838.
Barbara married first to David Byron Jensen (1935-2011) December 20, 1957 in Manti, Utah. The couple divorced. Barbara married second to Lehi Kerry Jones. (1929-2021) June 24, 1982 in St. George, Utah.

Obituary of Lehi Kerry Jones

Lehi Kerry Jones, husband, father, grandfather, friend, patriot, devoted disciple passed away July 19, 2021 at age 91. Kerry was a victim of the Covid-19 Delta Variant and Pneumonia. He was the third child and oldest son of Lehi Milton Jones and Bernella Elizabeth Gardner Jones. Kerry was born in Cedar City, Utah on October 29, 1929, also known as Black Tuesday. It was the same day as the infamous Wall Street crash that began the Great Depression. He liked to say his birth was the real cause of the crash. In truth, Kerry had a bright mind and a true gift for understanding economics and government. After attending public schools in Cedar City, Kerry enrolled in the Branch Agricultural College (BAC) from which he graduated in 1949. He then continued his education at the University of Utah and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing and Finance. His keen understanding of the subject lead one professor to ask that he drop out of the class. Kerry’s grasp of material was greater than that of the instructor and had become an embarrassment to his teacher. Following his graduation from the U. of U. in 1951, he was inducted into the United States Army. He received training at Fort Lewis and Camp Roberts where he was placed in a Leadership Course before being sent to ChunChon, Korea. There he was made Company Clerk. Sergeant Kerry Jones was discharged in 1953 and returned home to Cedar City. The following year he purchased Jones Equipment Company from his father and expanded the business in 1961 with the purchase of Southwest Distributing. He operated the company under the name Jones Equipment and Southwestern Distributing until its sale in 1975.

Kerry married Carol Ann Parry in 1956. To this union were born three children: Julie Ann, Kirk Parry and Mark Lehi. He liked to relate stories of the kids’ growing up years and he was a devoted father. The marriage ended in divorce. In 1973, Kerry was elected Mayor of Cedar City. At what he referred to as a raucous city animal control meeting in early 1974, Kerry met Mrs. Sue Jensen, a woman who had come to fight city hall over what she thought was unfair treatment of dogs. In 1979, Kerry became Chairman of the Iron County Republican Party with Sue Jensen as Vice-Chairman. By this time both Kerry and Sue were divorced and their personal relationship began. Lehi Kerry Jones and Barbara Sue Scalf were married in the St. George Temple on June 24, 1982, later sealed together in the Salt Lake Temple. In that same year, Kerry was installed as a member of the Board of Directors for State Bank of Southern Utah. Chosen by the Board to be bank president in 1984, he assumed that role at the time an FDIC/State audit with a Cease & Desist Order was impending. Through great effort and skill on the part of Kerry and the Board of Directors, the crisis was handled and State Bank of Southern Utah was back on a strong footing. Through the rest of his life, he felt a great sense of dedication to the welfare of the bank and its shareholders.

Kerry was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many ward and stake capacities. He and Sue were Ordinance Workers in the St. George Temple for more than ten years. They also served in the Cedar City Temple until the covid-19 pandemic required it to close. He served in the University First Stake with two Stake Presidencies. At the time of his death, he was giving devoted service as Stake Historian in the Cedar City West Stake. Kerry had a deep love and devotion for Jesus Christ. He was a man of great compassion. Although his hard work and ingenuity provided a comfortable life for himself and Sue, he was in many respects a simple, humble, good man who loved his family and devoted his life to making the world a better place. He was strongly conservative in his political and economic dealings yet he always treated others with fairness and respect. Somehow, ninety-one years seems too short a time for this special man.

Kerry is survived by his eternal sweetheart Sue and his children, Julie Ann Groo (Donny Cook) of Tacoma, WA; Kirk Parry (Becca) Jones of Cedar City, Mark Lehi (Lisa) Jones of Atlanta, GA and step-daughter Julie Jensen Hernandez (David Houchins) of Cedar City. Siblings, Joan Woodbury and Kenneth Jones also survive. He leaves 20 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lehi and Bernella Jones, sisters Marolyn Siddoway and Cynthia Line, and brother Jackson Jones, stepsons Steven (Barbara) Jensen, and Daniel Jensen.

Kerry would not wish anyone else to endure what Covid-19 caused him to bear. In respect for him, those attending the visitations and funeral will be asked to wear masks. For the benefit of all who cannot or choose not to wear mouth and nose coverings, the service will be offered via Zoom. He would wish us to hear his last plea: that all may live with integrity, honor this great nation as he did and love the Lord with all your heart.

Funeral services will be on Saturday, July 31, 2021 at 12:00 pm at Cedar 9th Ward (256 S. 900 W.). Visitations on Friday, July 30, 2021 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm, at Southern Utah Mortuary (190 N. 300 S.) and Saturday from 10:30 - 11:30 am, at the church.
