David S. Scalf (son of Lewis Scalf--1745, NC) is believed to have been born 1772 in North Carolina. (Scalf Family History, p. 182)

The author has no knowledge of a record of any type to support this birth date other than the estimation of his approximate birth date according to census records. A reference was not found in Scalf Family History or Chronicles of the Scalf Family concerning this birth date. Over the years of correspondence with Elmer Scalf we neglected to discuss this.

David S. Scalf settled in East Tennessee in the Elizabethton area of Carter County, Tennessee after first coming to Washington County where he is found on the 1830 census. The full name of David's wife is unknown; we only know her given name of which we have also have no proof other than census records. A marriage record for David has not been found although the author has searched the surrounding counties, as well as Wilkes, Surry and Iredell Counties in North Carolina where David's family was living when he was first found as head of house. David most likely married in one of the counties in North Carolina. The marriage record might have been lost, burned, or any number of catastrophes that took place during the early days of settlement.

It has always been assumed that the female, Nancy, living in the home of Levi Taylor with David S. Scalf on the 1850 census of Carter County, Tennessee was the wife of David S. Scalf. However, the author cannot confirm with certainty that this was David's wife. We certainly cannot confirm that they were married to each other simply because they both married in 1810 and were in the same home with David's daughter Sarah. Nancy could very well have been a daughter of David and widowed, as well as David himself. It would not be unusual that they were living with his daughter, Sarah Scalf Taylor. The early census records do not permit us to determine the relationship between family members; therefore, we have no means of knowing the exact relationship of this household other than what legend provides and we have no legend to rely on concerning the name of David's wife. It has simply been accepted among descendants that Nancy was his wife due to the listing of the 1850 census.

In the category, Married within the year, meaning married within the year the census was enumerated; a date of 1810 is listed for David. Under Nancy's name in this same category are quotation marks () or what was/is commonly known as ditto marks which means to repeat what is listed above. Note in this same category under Levi Taylor, a date of 1830 is listed and under his wife Sarah, the same quotation marks appear. Therefore, we assume that the intention here was to represent a marriage between Levi and Sarah, which Mrs. Motychak confirmed. However, we have nothing to confirm our thoughts concerning David and Nancy's marriage other than assumption.

In reviewing other names on this census, a particular year is listed under the head of house with quotation marks listed under the first female, and logically we assume this to represent the wife of the head of house. Many people are certainly indebted to this enumerator for this method. Technically, we can only assume that these folks were married to each other because there is no heading that specifically signifies whom these folks were married to. The heading simply states, Married within the year.

We must also remember that the enumerator might not have talked directly to the family that day. This information might have been given by anyone in the neighborhood and may or may not have been an accurate account of this family. Considering the ifs, ands, & buts of this scenario, we are left to assume according to the information that David and Nancy were married to each other in 1810. It was not uncommon at all for an enumerator to depend on information from a neighbor if the visited family was absent. Without some other type of record, or at least family legend, to confirm a marriage between David and Nancy we are left strictly to assumption.

According to the 1810 Iredell County, North Carolina census record, the oldest female in the home of David was born 1765-1784, which correlates with David's approximate birth date and would also suggest this was his wife. Another younger female in the home was born 1784-1794. One would assume this was David, his wife, and a daughter; however, again we cannot determine the relationship on the early census records. This might have been David and a young wife and the elderly female could have been his wife's mother. It could also have been David, a first wife and daughter. There is simply too much room for speculation on these earlier census records to assume that any female in the home was the wife of the head of house. The fact that the 1850 census suggests that David married Nancy in 1810 certainly lends credence to the assumption that the younger female in 1810 Iredell Co. North Carolina could have been Nancy and the older female another family member.  

However, another record appears to dispute this assumption when we examine a statement made by Mary Scalf in Sullivan County, TN about 1864 where she states the age of her son Dave. From the interview of Rhoda Peeks Motychak we know that Dave was a son of David S. Scalf.

Mrs. Motychak specifically named the boys that came over from North Carolina as Mac (Malachi) Dave (David) and Ben (Benjamin). However, Mrs. Motychak apparently had no information on the fourth son, William (Will), for she names only three boys. She did state she knew there was another girl besides Sarah, but did not know her name.

On the 1864 statement, Mary Scalf stated Dave's age and birth and then made her mark as his mother. Calculating the age of Dave at that time we conclude that it could have been none other than David (Dave) Scalf, son of David S. Scalf that Mary was referring to. There was no other David or Dave Scalf aged 45 in the area in the 1860's.

Considering the above information, combined with the fact that a 72-year old Mary Scalf is living in the home of Ben (son of David S.) in 1860 strongly suggests these boys belonged to Mary Scalf. However, we cannot find records to help us determine if Nancy from the 1850 census with David S. Scalf was the same person as Mary that gave this statement. Mary's age in 1860 also resembles more closely the female in David's home in 1810 North Carolina.

Mac, Will, Dave, and Ben were all born after 1810 as well as the girls; therefore, it appears that Nancy would have been their mother if in fact, Nancy was David's wife. Note that during those days it was a common practice for the youngest son to inherit the care of his parents and Ben was the youngest child. Mary, in his home in 1860, is listed under the Scalf surname; therefore, appearing to be his mother.

Ben's widow, Rhoda Helton/Hilton Scalf has not been found after this census. However, a Rhoda Scalf married John Salts 1866 in Carter County, Tennessee. The fact that Ben had died around 1862 and a Rhoda Scalf marries in 1866 strongly suggests that this Rhoda Scalf could have been Rhoda Helton/Hilton Scalf, widow of Ben Scalf. However, the marriage record does not list parents, ages, or anything to confirm this assumption. It is possible there was another Rhoda Scalf in the area, but none has been found. The Scalf family also had ties to the Salts family through other marriages as well.

It is difficult to piece together the life of David S. Scalf from the meager records. Like many of the Scalf family, it appears David left no records. Some researchers believe that he is the same David Scaff listed in the census records of North Carolina living in the Edenton District of Camden County, North Carolina in 1790. Some believe he was the same David found in the Pasquotank area in 1820 with the spelling of SCAFF; however, when reviewing the 1820 census records of all three counties it is clear that David Scalf was in Greenville County, SC in 1820. His father, Lewis Scalf was living nearby. David Scaff of the 1790 Edenton District, Camden County appears to be from another family due to deeds and other records the author has found. This family used the SCAFF spelling consistently and records reveal that this David was part of the family of John and William Scaff that remained in that area.

An excerpt is listed here from the book of Henry P. Scalf concerning David SCAFF from the 1790 Edenton District of North Carolina:

David Scalf and wife first appear in the 1790 Census of Edenton District, Camden County, North Carolina. At that time they had no children. His name was written as David SCAFF.   (Chapter XIV, Miscellaneous Families, Scalfs of Strawberry Plains by Henry P. Scalf from his book Chronicles of the Scalf Family.

It is the author's opinion that the David SCAFF of 1790 in the Edenton District of Camden County was not the same person as David S. SCALF. We feel certain that David S. Scalf was in his father's home in 1790 when he would have been around the age of 18. Evidence points to the fact that David Scaff of Camden County was certainly older than David Scalf at that time. Camden was formed from Pasquotank in 1777 and this family was likely part of the early Scarfe/Scalf/Scaff family of the Pasquotank area.

A David SCAFF was then enumerated on the 1820 census of Pasquotank County, North Carolina while a David SCELF was enumerated on the 1820 census of Greenville County, South Carolina living near Lewis and William Scalf. This census certainly suggests that these men were separate individuals.

The following is an excerpt from Scalf Family History by Elmer Scalf.

Both David and his father, Lewis Scalf, are listed in the 1820 Greenville County, South Carolina Census." 

The author must agree with Elmer Scalf concerning David's appearance in Greenville County, South Carolina in 1820. The author has a copy of this census record and can verify that Lewis Scalf and David's brother, William were living in Greenville County, South Carolina while David SCAFF was living in Pasquotank County, NC.

The Internet has made it much more convenient to study the history of the various counties and states. To help in your research, please take advantage of the information provided concerning the areas our ancestors lived in. This can be a very valuable tool.

 A study of the history of Pasquotank County, North Carolina area reveals that David SCAFF may not have moved from the area at all due to the locations of Camden and Pasquotank.

We can only speculate as to whom this David SCAFF was and this will be addressed later. At this time, our main concentration will be on David whose surname is spelled SCALF.

Neither the author, nor Virgil Scalf, has been able to find David S. Scalf or his brother, Benjamin as head of house in 1800 and must assume that at least David was still with his father, Lewis. David's brother, Benjamin, who was older and likely married at that time was not found anywhere as head of house until 1810. It has been said that Benjamin was in Tennessee in 1820; however, there is no complete census of East Tennessee for 1820. The census list available has been compiled from other records and no Scalf family was listed. As stated above, David was in Greenville Co. SC in 1820 and Benjamin was not found at all.

We are left to assume that both David S. Scalf and his brother, Benjamin, were living with their parents in 1800 although we have nothing to support this other than the estimate of ages in their father's home. It is certainly questionable that they would still be at home due to their ages, given the fact that most men married around 21 years old at that time. Benjamin would have been in his early 30's and David would have been in his late 20's; however, it is possible they did marry late.

By 1810, both Benjamin and David are in Iredell County, North Carolina and in 1820 David S. Scalf is in Greenville County, South Carolina, along with his father Lewis and half-brother, William. Benjamin was not found anywhere in 1820. He would have been around 53-55 years old and logically, was likely head of house somewhere in that year unless he was in the home of an unidentified relative.

Elmer Scalf states that Benjamin was in Tennessee in 1820. Henry Scalf makes no mention in Chronicles of the Scalf Family concerning his thoughts of where Benjamin was living in 1820. Unfortunately, we have no way of knowing how Elmer arrived at this conclusion.

The following is an attempt to track David S. Scalf from 1790 North Carolina through his appearance in East Tennessee.

1790--- First Census of the United States, Edenton District, Camden County, NC-----From the 1790 census of Camden County, North Carolina, a David SCAFF is listed as head of house with an older female assumed to be his wife. It is the author's opinion that this David was not the David SCALF of Carter Co. TN. David Scalf would have been 18 years old. His father, Lewis, is in Edgecombe County, North Carolina where he has 10 people in the home. Lewis had married Elizabeth Blackburn in 1777 and we believe from the records that their son, William was born about 1784. They likely had a child before this but we have not found one. It is difficult to determine who might have been in the home on this census because some of the children from his first marriage had married at this time. John Sr. had married Edeah Carlisle and from all appearances was likely in the home of his father, Lewis, with two daughters and possibly his son, John Jr., born in 1790. There were three white males under sixteen. Two of these could have been William and John Jr., but we do not know of any other male in the family under 16 at this time. David would have been 18 at this time, and Benjamin was older. The two males over sixteen were likely Lewis and John Sr. It appears from this record that neither Benjamin nor David was with the family in 1790 although they cannot be found as head of house in this year.

1800----In the 1800 NC census, John and Lewis Scalf are in Surry Co. NC. John is now head of house and is often found near Lewis until after 1805 when he allegedly participated in the theft of a light blue hog. (See the book, Scalf Family History, pg. 16, or Lewis Scalf Chapter III at the website) Neither David S. Scalf nor his brother Benjamin was found as head of house in 1800. We assume by this census that John had his family with him and the two males with Lewis ages 10-16 were probably sons of Lewis and Elizabeth Blackburn. There is one male 16-26 in the home with an estimated birth date of 1774-1790. This could have been David although he is believed to have been born 1772. Neither David nor Benjamin was found as head of house.

1810----Benjamin and David S. Scalf first appear as head of house in the 1810 Iredell Co. NC census. Their father Lewis and son William are in neighboring Wilkes County, North Carolina. John Scalf, Sr. is in Floyd County, Kentucky at this time.

1820----David S. SCELF is listed on the 1820 Greenville County, South Carolina census; however, Benjamin is not found anywhere. There is a David with the spelling of SCAFF in Pasquotank County, NC and is probably the same David that is listed in 1790 Camden County. There is also a John SCAFF there in 1820 and a Mrs. SCAFF in Halifax Co. North Carolina.

1825 ----Elmer states in his book, Scalf Family History, or Chapter III, Lewis Scalf, on the website), that Lewis Scalf had bought land in Habersham County, Georgia by 1825. This is confirmed by a land deed in possession of the author.

1830----This brings us to the 1830 census where David S. Scalf and his brother, Benjamin, now appear together in Tennessee for the first time. Their brother, John Scalf Sr. is over in Russell County, Virginia and their half-brother, William, is in Habersham County, Georgia with his father in 1830. Lewis Scalf died around 1839 in Habersham County, Georgia.

As can be seen on the 1810 census, there is a female in the home of David Scalf that one might assume was his wife. She was born 1765-1784 and was in the same age category as David. Another female one might assume to be their daughter was born 1784 –1794. Due to the style of enumeration during the early census, we cannot confirm if this was a wife and daughter or simply other family members. In reality, these two females could have been anyone. The younger female could have been David's wife and the older female, her mother.

However, note the difference in the age of the female that appears to be David's wife in 1810 and the older female in 1820 Greenville Co. SC. In 1810 the oldest female was born 1765-1784, however, in 1820, the oldest female was born 1794-1804. This is a significant difference. The younger female in 1810 had a birth range of 1784-1794, which does not match with either female in 1820.

According to the years listed on these two census records, the younger female could have been born about 1794 which we could assume was the same person in 1820. However, there is a 10-year gap for the older female. In 1810, she was born 1765-1784 but in 1820 she was born 1784-1794 leaving a gap of 10 years, which suggests she could have been born about 1784. According to the 1850 census of Washington Co. TN, Nancy was born about 1791. The 1830 and 1840 TN census correlates with the 1850 TN census concerning Nancy's birth date from 1850, but does not correlate with the earlier census records.

Interestingly, the 1830, 1840 and 1850 census of Washington Co. TN correlates more closely with the younger female in David's home in 1810 Wilkes Co. NC, than the older female in 1820 Greenville Co. SC.

The 1820 census of Greenville Co. SC reveals that David had at least four daughters and three sons by 1820. From the Motychak interview, Mrs. Motychak only knew of three sons and two daughters. She knew of Dave, Mac and Ben. Ben was the youngest son and apparently she had not heard of William, which suggests that William might not have lived near his brothers. Mrs. Motychak confirms that Sarah Scalf Taylor was one daughter of David, but we do not know who the other three daughters were. It is very possible that two daughters died before David moved to Tennessee, but it is also possible they married in South Carolina before the move and remained there, or married soon after they arrived in Tennessee. The author has found no marriages of any female Scalf family members in SC 1820-1830.

From the 1830 census, we find that David had four sons and two daughters in the home, suggesting that two daughters had married or died if the 1820 census was correct. The sons should have been Malachi (Mac), David (Dave), William (Will), and Benjamin (Ben). We believe that at least one daughter was Sarah J. Scalf Taylor. We can only speculate as to the name of the other daughter. This would be a total of eight children born to David S. Scalf if the census records are correct.

The oldest son in David's home in 1830 was born 1815-1820. Mrs. Motychak states that Mac was the oldest. However, census records suggest Mac was the third son of David S. Scalf. According to the statement of Mary Scalf in Sullivan County, TN, Dave would have been the oldest son, born 1818. William (Will) was born about 1820 according to his age on census records and Malachi (Mac) was born about 1822. Benjamin was the last son born about 1829; therefore some of the daughters were likely born between Mac and Ben (1823-1828). The census for Washington Co. TN was enumerated beginning June 1, 1830.

We know that Sarah married Levi Taylor in 1830 according to the 1850 census. If Malinda was a daughter, she married in 1836 and was at home in 1830. There was still another daughter unmarried and living at home in 1830.

In 1830, Jefferson County, TN, there is a Levi Taylor, head of house age; 20-30 and a female age 15-20. No children are in the home, which does suggest this is possibly Levi and Sarah. Jefferson was one county away from Washington where Sarah's family was living. It is separated from Washington by Greene County, TN. The Jefferson Co. census was enumerated beginning November 1, 1830. There were two free colored females listed with them. If Malinda Scalf Cash was in fact, a daughter of David S. Scalf, Malinda would have been at home in 1830 because she did not marry until 1836.

The age category for the colored females is listed next to the category of 100+, under the category of total. Therefore, we are not certain as to the ages of these females.

In 1840, David had one daughter at home and two sons.

William (Will) married in Carter County, TN in 1845. Mac (by estimation of first child) married 1840-1844. Mac might have been at home or he could have married shortly before the enumeration of the 1840 census. Dave could also have married before or after the enumeration of the 1840 census. The 1860 census of Sullivan County suggests Dave's first child was born abt.1844. The author strongly suspects that Will was one of the sons in the home of David in 1840. We do have a marriage record for William and he did not marry until 1845. Ben was certainly the other son due to his age at that time.

On the census of 1840 in David's home is a free black male, age 10 or less in 1840. This male does not appear on any census before or after.

We could speculate as to whom the missing daughters of David were, but again, this would only be speculation and may not be properly placed in this line; therefore, to avoid confusion, the author will present the information concerning the unplaced Scalf family members in a separate chapter titled Unplaced Families of East TN.

Living 11 houses away from David S. Scalf in 1840 is Levi and Sarah Scalf Taylor.

David S. Scalf then appears on the census of 1850 in the home of Levi Taylor. With him is Nancy Scalf who appears to be about 19 years younger than David and assumed to be his wife. Nancy's birth date would estimate around 1791 on this census. Levi and Sarah did not have any children on either census and none have been mentioned by descendants. Abram (Abraham?) Shell was living in the home in 1850. A relationship to the Shell family is unknown at this time.

David S. Scalf and Nancy were not found after the 1850 census. Nancy's birth estimation correlates with the oldest female from the 1820, 1830, 1840 and 1850 census; however, the age of the oldest female in David's home in 1810 Wilkes Co. NC conflicts with the birth date of Nancy. The 1850 census more specifically suggests she was born 1791.

Our East Tennessee branch of the Scalf family was not inclined to leave Wills and apparently, not inclined to leave much documentation at all, or the records have been lost or destroyed. Many records were lost and destroyed during the Civil War. The East Tennessee region was a "hot bed" for conflict during this time.

The Carter/Washington/Greene/ Hawkins and Sullivan County area was in turmoil during the Civil War with the Union and the Confederacy both camped here. Our Washington, Sullivan and Carter County cousins were fighting each other during this turmoil. As noted by Mrs. Motychak, Mac and his two sons, William and James enlisted with the Union Army and Mac's brother Dave enlisted with the Confederate Army. Here the author relates a story told by Mrs. Motychak concerning an incident in the war between her grandfather, Mac, and his brother Dave.

One day during the fighting Mac said that Dave had been shooting at him all day. Mac stated to the family, He's been shooting at me all day, so I cut the bushes for him to run by.

Not only was this area a wilderness but these folks also experienced more than their share of epidemics such as influenza, typhoid, cholera, and diphtheria, along with other ailments of the day. Many families were completely wiped out during these epidemics.

The East Tennessee region was not exempt from Indian attacks although most of these took place much earlier than 1830. Legend in the family states that Miranda White and Elizabeth Scalf White were killed by Indians and family members raised their children. However, the author has been unable to verify this legend. According to the ages of these folks, it is not likely there were Indian attacks at this time. No doubt, they might have died; however, their children were born well into the 1830-1840 period after Indian attacks had long ceased. The last Indian depredation recorded in this area was 1794-1800. The actual Indian removal took place beginning in 1838. Indian attacks had ceased even before the removal.

The Asiatic cholera epidemic that began in the Mississippi Valley about 1832 reached Jonesborough (Washington County, TN) about 1873 and took its toll on the families of the area with about 60% of the folks having cholera before it ran its course. Three doctors, four ministers and some of the townsfolk remained to care for the sick and bury the dead, but others packed up and left the area with some returning later on. Some families did not return. No doubt, some of our family died during this epidemic, although there is no recorded history to confirm this.

The mountains, hills, and valleys of the East Tennessee, Southwest Virginia, Kentucky and North Carolina regions are a breathtaking and beautiful panorama of color and wildlife. I have not seen anything to compare with it in my travels. However, during the time of our ancestors - though beautiful it was - it was a very dangerous region.

Death was just a breath away in many instances. Doctors were few and very far between. Rattlesnake, copperhead, bear, panther and other wild animals abounded through the mountainous region. One was very fortunate to survive Indian attacks, wild animals, childbirth, and the common ailments of the day, along with epidemics.

Farming was the main occupation of the day and in the mountainous areas this was not an easy task. There was no convenient farm equipment to make it easier and the land was worked mostly by hand-made equipment. If you have ever seen, or have been involved in plowing with a mule or a horse in the mountains then you have had a first-hand experience concerning back-breaking work. This was not an easy task on level ground, but certainly more difficult on the side of a hill or mountain.

Tobacco farming was, and still is, a livelihood in this area and that was another experience for the farmer. This required many hours in the sun, walking along in a stooped position with a handmade tobacco setter (a wooden stick) with which to make holes in the ground to set the plants one at time.

Our ancestors were up at 5 a.m., had breakfast and spent the day working. After a lunch break, they were back at it until sundown. Often, water would have to be hauled in barrels up the side of a hill or mountain by mule or horse in areas where no water supply was close by. The water was poured into the ground as the plant was set. Work was not over after the plants were set either. I won't go into the whole process of tobacco farming but it was very hard work at that time, and still is today even with modern equipment although equipment does make the work less back-breaking.

In many instances, farm work was done with "gun in hand," or at least nearby, as was the case in many regions. Many families lived great distances apart and were alone to defend themselves from attacks of any nature. The Carter and Washington County area is a valley that borders the mountains of North Carolina and was a heavily traveled area from North Carolina into Tennessee. Not only did the Indians travel this area frequently, but bushwhackers were also a problem to contend with.

Carter County was formed from Washington County, Tennessee in January of 1796 before Tennessee was a state. Five months later, in June of 1796, President George Washington signed a bill admitting Tennessee as the sixteenth state. We have corresponded with a number of researchers that appear to be from the line of David S. Scalf and they have unselfishly contributed to this work. For their efforts, we are very grateful and we have tried to list their names in acknowledgment of their contributions. However, the author is not without error and some names may not be listed. If your name is not listed and you have contributed to this work, please let us know and this will be corrected.

In studying the census records of Carter, Washington and Sullivan County, Tennessee, the author has arrived at the conclusion that the wife of David S. Scalf might have possibly still been living in 1860. However, there is some conflict in the records concerning her name.

Recalling the 1850 census of Carter County, where David S. Scalf and Nancy Scalf are found in the home of Levi Taylor, the census suggests that she might have been his wife and that her name was Nancy. On the 1860 census of Sullivan County, Tennessee, a Mary Scalf is found in the home of Benjamin (Ben) Scalf, a known son of David S. Scalf.

This Mary in Benjamin's (Ben) home is listed as 72 years old and would have been born about 1788. Benjamin was born about 1829 and is certainly a known son of David S. Scalf. In 1864, Mary stated she was the mother of Dave Scalf. If this is correct, then Mary would have been the wife of David S. Scalf, although we cannot explain Nancy listed with David in the home of Levi and Sarah Scalf Taylor in 1850. (See discussion concerning Nancy and Mary above)

Ben, brother of Malachi (Mac), William (Will) and David (Dave) was found on the 1850 Carter County, Tennessee census with wife, Lydia Mayfield. Benjamin and Lydia were married in 1847 (Carter County marriages). Benjamin is listed as 21 years old and Lydia is listed as 18 years old. They have a son, Isaac who is 2 years old and a son, Jesse, one month old. Benjamin's birth date estimates around 1829.

On the 1860 census, Benjamin is found listed as Benjamin SCALP. His age is now 30 years old and again his birth date falls around 1830 which is only a one-year difference from his stated age on the 1850 census. No other Benjamin is found in the area. His wife is now Rhoda. Carter County marriages reveal that Benjamin Scalf married Rosanna Helton (Hilton?) on March 22, 1860 in Carter County, Tennessee. Rhoda was used as a short name for Rosanna.

Isaac, son of Benjamin and Lydia is in the home and listed as 12 years old, which correlates with the 1850 census in the home of his parents, Ben and Lydia. Benjamin and Lydia's son, Jesse, is not in the home with Ben and Rhoda. However, a Jesse Scalf is listed in the 1860 East Tennessee Mortality Schedule as dying of Scrofula at the age of 2. We believe this was the same Jesse Scalf. Jesse does not appear on any census record after 1850.

A Mary Scalp (Scalf) age 72 is listed in the home of Benjamin. Mary was born in North Carolina about 1788. It appears that this Mary could be the same Mary Scalf that signed the birth statement of Dave Scalf in Sullivan County in 1864, although it is very possible that Mary was Rhoda's mother and the enumerator failed to list her surname.

By estimation, Nancy (1850 census of Levi Taylor) would have been born around 1790 - 1793. Mary (1860 census) was born around 1788. This is a difference of three or four years in comparison to Nancy's estimated birth date. Nancy and Mary could have been the same person and due to possible senility, her age was misstated. A search of the census records does not reveal David or Nancy Scalf as head of house in 1860.

However, the evidence suggests that David Scalf was married to an older female in 1810 Iredell County, North Carolina. He then states in 1830 that he married in 1810 and the female, Nancy, listed beneath him stated the same.

The questions are: Were David and Nancy married to each other? Was Mary a first wife of David and mother of some of his children? Was Mary and Nancy the same person?

It is very possible that Nancy (1830) was a daughter of David and the younger female listed on the 1810 census of Iredell County, North Carolina where David is found with an older female that appears to be his wife. If this is correct, then apparently David and his first wife (if there was a first wife) had parted. We cannot say that David and Nancy were husband and wife simply because they both married in 1810, and were living in the home of a known daughter of David. We also cannot say that Nancy and Mary was the same person without further evidence. Therefore, the wife of David S. Scalf still remains a mystery without further records.

The facts are:

  1) David S. Scalf first appears as head of house in Iredell County, North Carolina in 1810 with an older female born 1765-1784 and a younger female born 1784-1794, both of which appear to be a wife and daughter.

  2) David was then found in Greenville County, South Carolina in 1820 and the older female born 1765-1784 from the 1810 NC census was not listed, but a younger female born 1794-1804 is now the oldest female in the home. The age of this female resembles the age of the younger female from the 1810 NC census.

  4) David appears in Washington Co. TN in 1830 and the oldest female in the home has an age range that resembles the oldest female in the home in 1820 SC and the youngest female in the home in 1810 NC.

  5) In 1840, the age of the oldest female in the home is still in the same age range as the youngest female in 1810 NC, the oldest female in the home in 1820 SC, and the older female in 1830 TN.

  6) In 1850 Carter Co. TN in the home of Levi and Sarah Scalf Taylor, both David and Nancy state they married in 1810. Nancy's age resembles the age of the younger female in 1810 NC and the older female from the 1820 SC, 1830 TN and 1840 TN census.

  7) Mary Scalf signs a document stating the birth date of her son, Dave Scalf, in 1864. Dave Scalf was a brother of Benjamin (Ben) and a son of David S. Scalf.

  8) Mary Scalf is listed in the home of Benjamin Scalf in 1860, a known son of David S. Scalf. Mary was born about 1788 and is listed under the Scalf name.

  9) Neither David S. Scalf nor his assumed wife, Nancy, was found after 1850.

10) Mary Scalf from the 1860 census and 1864 statement was not found after 1860.

David S. Scalf left a number of descendants in Washington, Sullivan and Carter Counties and many remain there today.

The chapter of David S. Scalf has raised more questions than it has given answers; however, due to conflicting records, the author cannot verify with satisfaction the wife or wives of David S. Scalf at this time. If we believe the 1820 census of SC, then David also had more children than we previously thought. Three sons and one daughter of David are confirmed by Mrs. Rhoda Peeks Motychak. Census and marriage records confirm another son; however, the remainder of the children is left to speculation without further records, which do not seem to be located in this area or at least, have not been found.

Sarah J. Scalf, was born about 1811 according to the 1850 census of Carter County, Tennessee; about 1813 according to the 1860 census of that county; about 1806 on the 1870 census and finally, about 1817 on the 1880 census of Carter County. We have no birth record or any type of record to help us determine exactly when Sarah was born.

The 1850 census states that Sarah and Levi married in 1830 although we don't know if they married before the enumeration of the census of her father's home or after. In 1830, there is a Levi Taylor head of house in Jefferson County, Tennessee with a female age 15-20 that might very well be Levi and Sarah.

The age category for the colored females is listed next to the category of 100+, under the category of total. Therefore, we are not certain as to the ages of these females.

In 1840, Levi and Sarah are living in Sullivan County 11 houses away from her father, David.

In the home of Levi and Sarah in 1850 are David S. and Nancy Scalf. Abram Shell, whom we have no information on, was in the home as well.

In 1860, Levi and Sarah were still living in Carter County. David and Nancy are gone and in the home is Adeline Scalf (Addie) daughter of Sarah's brother Benjamin. Mrs. Motychak confirmed that Adeline (Addie) was raised by Levi and Sarah. We assume due to his age that David had died after 1850. Nancy could have still been living, but might also have died.

Levi and Sarah were found in 1870 with Addie still in the home. Christopher Crouch was also living with the family. Interestingly, a Christopher Crouch was in the home. Another of the unplaced Scalf's in the area was living with the Crouch family in 1850.

In 1880, Adaline was in the home, but her name is spelled Adlaide on this census. Addie had a son, Jesse, at this time likely named for her brother that had died. Addie later married John Emmert. (See section on Adeline Scalf)

Levi and Sarah were not found after this census.

There are obvious errors in Sarah's age from census to census. Note that she was 39 in 1850, 47 in 1860 and then 64 in 1870, and only 63 in 1880. If the 1850 census was near correct, she should have been 49 in 1860, 59 in 1870 and 69 in 1880. Neither Levi nor Sarah was found after 1880. We have no information on any children from this marriage.

Malinda Scalf, daughter of David S. Scalf, was born about 1815 in Tennessee. The author cannot verify that Malinda was the daughter of David S. Scalf at this time; however, we feel strongly that she was the other daughter that Mrs. Motychak could not recall and possibly because Malinda had died early.

Malinda and William L. Cash were married March 17, 1836 in Washington County, Tennessee. Very little is known of this family and research is ongoing. What is known about Malinda comes from the 1850 and 1860 Carter County and Sullivan County, Tennessee census.

William Cash was born about 1812 in Tennessee. William and Malinda are listed on the 1850 and 1860 censuses with the following children.

All birth dates are estimated from this census. All of the members of this family were listed as born in Tennessee.

Daniel Cash, son of William and Malinda Scalf Cash, was born about 1848 according to census records. He was living in Washington County, Tennessee with his parents in 1850 and by 1860 Daniel had married and was head of house. His wife is Martha. James, who appears to be a son in 1870, is nine years old. The 1880 census reveals that Martha had been married prior to her marriage to Daniel and James from the 1870 census was a son by her prior marriage. We do not have Martha's maiden name at this time.

David (Dave) Scalf, son of David S. Scalf, was born 1818-1822 according to census records. Mrs. Rhoda Peeks Motychak stated in her interview with Bob Scalf that this David was known to the family as Dave; therefore, in order to differentiate between father and son, the author will use the name Dave in this chapter when referring to this David.

Dave Scalf was part of "Witcher's Sullivan County Local Defense Troops" in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. (Roster of Tennesseans in the Civil War) His brother, Malachi and Malachi's two sons, William (Bill) and James (Jim) joined the Union Army during the war. (Motychak interview #2)

An interview with Rhoda Peeks Motychak, by Bob Scalf, has been relied on for information on this family along with census records, deeds, and other records, as well as history submitted by descendants of this line.

Dave first appears on the 1860 Sullivan County, TN census. Some confusion concerning Dave's name was caused due to a transcribed copy of the 1870 census of Sullivan County, TN where his name appeared to be Daniel; however, further review of the original microfilm reveals that the spelling is likely David and not Daniel.

We are indebted to Diane McGreevy, a descendant of Dave Scalf, for sending us a copy of a document revealing the birth date of Dave Scalf. The lady signing this document as Dave's mother is listed as Mary Scalf. Mary signed with an X. This document suggests that Dave Scalf of Sullivan County, Tennessee was the son of Mary Scalf of Sullivan County, Tennessee. However, examination of the 1850 census of Carter County causes further confusion because this census suggests that Dave's father, David S. Scalf, was married to Nancy. No mention of a wife named Mary has been found in records or by legend concerning David S. Scalf.

In 1860 Carter County, Tennessee in the home of Benjamin (Ben) Scalf (youngest son of David S. Scalf) there is a female named Mary. Her relationship to Benjamin is not stated on this census; however, no other surname is listed for her. Her age is listed as 72 and her approximate birth year would be 1788. Interestingly, the lady that stated Dave's birth date was also named Mary. Dave and Ben were brothers. This causes us to question who Nancy on the 1850 census actually was and whether David S. Scalf was married twice, or Nancy was also Mary.

We know that David S. Scalf stated he married in 1810 and a female named Nancy is listed beneath him on the 1850 census. It is also stated that Nancy married in 1810; therefore, we would logically assume that she was the wife of David S. Scalf. If Nancy was his wife, then she would have been the mother of the children born after 1810. As we can see from the statement of Mary Scalf, Dave was born November 25, 1818.

Note that Mary said the 25^th day of last November 1863 and her statement was made January 30, 1864. Calculating 45 years from the year 1863 places Dave's birth year as 1818 and correlates with Mary's statement. It is unknown to the author at this time why this oath was needed, but one assumption could be due to something pertaining to the Civil War since the war was still in progress at that time.

Dave was living in Sullivan County, Tennessee in 1870 as can be seen on the census record of that year. By 1880, records reveal that Dave moved to Carter County, Tennessee where his father had lived previously. Diane McGreevy confirmed this with another document stating that David entered five acres in Carter County on March 10, 1880. This property was in District 8 of Carter County, TN. Below is a transcribed copy from that document with the original spelling.

Dave's property joined L. Carter and ____Chambers. The author assumes that L. Carter was Landon Carter, son of John Carter, prominent citizens of Carter Co. TN. Information on the Landon Carter family can be found at the following address. http://www.tngenweb.org/carter    

Dave paid $235, the amount of his tax in Dist 9 for 1852, 3&4. This statement could be interpreted several ways and raises several questions.

First, was Dave living in district 9 of Carter County in 1852, 53 and 54 and did not pay property tax for those years? Was Dave delinquent on his property tax in district 9 of Sullivan County, which had to be met before he could purchase the tract in Carter County? 

We assume there was a district 9 in Carter County in those years because Dave's brother Malachi was living in district 8 of Carter County in 1850; therefore, this statement suggests that Dave might have lived there previously and owed back tax in Carter County for 1852, 53 and 54. Dave then paid the taxes owed on the property in Carter County and moved from district 9 of Sullivan to Carter. This also raises another question; did Dave's father, David S. Scalf, own the property in Carter County and Dave purchased the property for back tax?

Interestingly, David S. Scalf was living with his daughter, Sarah Scalf Taylor, in district 8 of Carter County in 1850. In 1840, districts were not listed on census records, but David S. Scalf was head of house in that year and living in Sullivan County. David S. Scalf was not found after 1850 and assumed deceased. It is possible he owned the property in Carter County and due to old age and infirmities; he moved to his daughter's home and was unable to pay the taxes.

A number of things can be assumed from the early records. Early records were not recorded as accurately at that time as they are today and statements were not as specific as we are accustomed to. We might assume that if this were the original property of David S. Scalf, the clerk would have made some sort of statement suggesting this; however, there is nothing to indicate that David S. Scalf was involved with this property at all.

This is not a significant factor in tracking our ancestors other than to descendants of this line that might be interested in where their ancestors lived. The author has pointed this out for those interested in pursuing this. For those not familiar with the area, Sullivan, Carter and Washington Counties join in the area where many of our Scalf family lived. In some cases, they lived across the road from each other in different counties.

Dave (son of David S.) most likely died 1880 – 1900. His wife, Susannah, appears on the 1900 census of Carter County, Tennessee as head of house where she is listed as Susan. Dave and Susannah lived in Sullivan County through 1879 and moved to District 8 of Carter County in 1880 according to census and tax records. It appears that Susan remained in Carter County after Dave's death.    

By estimation of the age of the first child born to Dave and Susannah, it appears they married 1840-1844. Their first child, Nancy, was born about 1844 according to the 1860 census.

Dave was not found on the 1850 census of this area although we assume he would have been head of house in this year. Dave and Susannah had seven children on this census.

Note that George, Dorthula, Samuel, David and Martha were not listed on the 1870 census. We believe these are the children that died. Dave states he was born in NC on this census, but on the previous census he stated he was born in TN.

Dave Scalf and his family appear on the 1880 census of Carter County, Tennessee in the 8th district, enumerated on June 23, 1880. Sarah E. is still in the home here, but Mary E. is gone.

Note the ages from each of these censuses. As we know, ages can vary by several years from census -to- census. Dave Scalf was not found after 1880; however, his wife, Susannah, was still living in Carter County, Tennessee on the 1900 census where she states her age is 70, and is listed as Susan Scalf.

According to other census records, Susannah (Susan) should have been 76-80 by the enumeration of the 1900 census. Their daughter, Sarah E., was also in the home and born around 1865 according to this census. Their son, William, was born around 1867.

Please remember that the 1900 census shows the age, the birth month and year. Sometimes the person giving the information did not count the years accurately and sometimes the enumerator did the calculations and did not calculate correctly. This is sometimes the reason for the age variance from one census to another. Other census years do not list the birth month or year, only the age.

In 1880, Dave's daughter, Mary Elizabeth, was gone from the home. An Elizabeth Scalf was found living next door to Dave in 1880 in district 8 of Carter County. We believe this was David's daughter, Mary Elizabeth Scalf.

On the census below (1900), her daughter Sarah E. is still in the home. Sarah's birth date is stated here as 1865. Susan's son, William, is now gone from the home.

Nancy Jane Scalf, daughter of Dave Scalf and Susannah Smalling Scalf, was born March 8, 1843 in Tennessee and died April 5, 1930 in Johnson City, Tennessee. Nancy was found as head of house in 1880 Carter County, Tennessee with two daughters and a son in the home at this time.

Lawson Hampton, a boarder, was also living in the home and would become the husband of Nancy. Nancy and Lawson were married July 21, 1881. (Carter County, TN Marriages)

Either Lawson Hampton died, or Nancy and Lawson divorced, for she then married Eli Peeks March 6, 1889. (Link to Eli Peeks family 1850 - 1880)

Eli was considerably older than Nancy and had been married prior to his marriage to Nancy. He was found with his first family on the 1850 census living in the 7^th District of Carter County. He was 32 years old at this time with an estimated birth date of 1818. The children in the home were Sarah, Alfred and Matilda. In 1860, he and his wife, Martha were living in the 19^th district of Carter County. He is listed as 45 years old, a Cooper, born in NC. In the home are his wife, Martha, and children, Sarah, Alfred and Ann. In 1880, he and Martha are living in Carter County, but the district is not listed. He is now 61 years old. Eli and Martha were not found after this census. Apparently, Martha had died and he remarried to Nancy Scalf in 1889. He would have been around 26 years older than Nancy.

Eli was a soldier in the 13^th Cavalry along with William Jackson and James Landon Scalf. He is listed on the 1890 Veteran's Schedule.

Peeks, Eli – Private – 13^th Cavalry – Enlisted 24 September 1863 – Discharged 5 September 1865 serving 1 year, 11 months and nineteen days. Post Office address appears to be Keensburg. Disability incurred was Chronic Diarrhea. It is difficult to determine what district this was. It appears to be the 11^th or 13^th district.

It is unknown if Lawson was the father of the children in the home in 1880. The estimated birth years suggest they were born before her marriage to Eli Peeks; however, the children used the Peeks name.

NOTE: Remie from the 1880 census should be Renie.

Nancy was living in District 8 of Carter County. Her parents and sister, Mary Elizabeth, were also living in District 8 in this year.

Living in District 8 of Carter County, TN in 1900 is a Nancy PEAX. She has a son David, born July 1888. This Nancy was a widow and stated she had one child born with one living. Her birth is listed as March 1855, which does not correlate with Nancy Scalf Peeks. Her statement of the number of children also does not correlate even though she has a son named David in the home. Also, the N. J. Peaks living in Elizabethton in 1920 cannot be confirmed.

Please note that this may not be Nancy Scalf Peeks, daughter of Dave and Susannah; however, this appears to be the only Nancy Peeks (Peax) listed in the area and we can only assume this might be the correct Nancy Scalf Peeks. Recall that Nancy Scalf, daughter of Dave and Susannah was living in District 8 of Carter County in 1880 and this might be her in 1900 although there are discrepancies on this census.

A Nancy Peeks that correlates with our Nancy Scalf Peeks cannot be confirmed in this area in 1910. However, by 1930 Nancy Scalf Peeks was found living in the home of her daughter, Atha Peeks Brown who was also a widow at that time.

Mary Elizabeth was found as head of house in 1880 Carter County, Tennessee, District 8 with her three children, William, Robert and Caldonia (Callie) Scalf. Mary Elizabeth was living near her parents and her sister, Nancy, at this time. Descendants of Mary Elizabeth Scalf have been contributed by Patricia Miller of Knoxville, Tennessee and a study of census records.

Note: On this census Elizabeth states her age as 32 and her birth is estimated to be about 1848. Looking at the 1860 census in her father's home, she is age, 12 and her birth is estimated at 1848. Again, in 1870 her age is listed as 21 and born in 1849. There is a one-year difference both ways. In 1880, she is 32 and born in 1848.

Mary Elizabeth (Lizzie) was found on the 1900 census once again as head of house; however, she was now living in District 15. She is listed here as a widow although we cannot confirm a marriage for her at this time. Her son, Robert, who was divorced at this time, and daughter, Callie, from the 1880 census are in the home. Mary Elizabeth had a granddaughter Bessie in the home in 1900 Carter County, TN. Bessie was the daughter of Mary's daughter, Susan.

Mary is now listed as 61 with a calculated birth date of 1839, which would lead one to believe this is not the same person. We believe that either Elizabeth or the enumerator did not calculate the years correctly on this census. However, her son, Robert and Callie (Caldonia) is in the home and confirms this to be Elizabeth from the 1880 census. Robert's age is stated as 20 here. His age was stated as 4 years old on the 1880 census and he should be 24 in 1900. Lizzie states she was widowed, but no marriage has been found.

Mary Elizabeth (Lizzie) was also found in 1910 as head of house and living in district 15 again. Her grandchildren, Bessie and Chester, were also living in the home. Bessie and Chester were children of her daughter, Susan.

In 1920, Mary Elizabeth (Lizzie) had either moved to district 7 or the districts had changed. Her daughter Susan was still living with her at this time, as well as her grandson Chester. Susan now has a daughter, Mary M.

On the 1900 census of Carter County, Tennessee Susan (Susannah) wife of Dave stated that she had 10 children with 5 living. On the 1860 census of Sullivan County, Dave and Susannah had seven children and by the enumeration of the 1870 Sullivan County census, three more children were born. This calculates a total of 10 children as stated by their mother. We believe the deceased children of Dave and Susannah were George, Dorthula, Samuel, David and Martha. Dave and Susannah lost five children in 10 years. These children appear on the 1860 census but are gone from the 1870 census.

   China Marie Scalf, 76, of Germantown, Ohio, formerly of Hampton, died Monday, January 24, 2000, at Sycamore Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. Mrs. Scalf was a native of Elk Park, N.C., and the daughter of the late Henry Dewey and Novella Hicks Holtsclaw. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harry Edgar Scalf, and a brother, Homer P. Holtsclaw. Survivors include two sons, Dayton P. Scalf, Johnson City, and Larry E. Scalf, Hampton, and a daughter, Marty Gillespie, Germantown, Ohio. Six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive. Elmer B. Scalf, 73, 148 Old Stony Creek Road, Elizabethton, died Monday, November 13, 2000, at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center Hospital, Mountain Home, following an extended illness.

Mr. Scalf was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Lloyd and Maude Shaw Scalf.

Mr. Scalf was of the Baptist Faith. He was a former employee of Bemberg Corporation, North American Rayon Corporation, Tri-State Container, and American Water Heater. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Marine Corps, and was a member of the Captain Lynn H. Folsom VFW Post #2166 and the National Rifle Association. Survivors include his wife, Martha K. Greenwell Scalf.
 
Funeral services for Elmer B. Scalf, 73, 148 Old Stony Creek Road, Elizabethton, who died Monday, November 13, 2000, will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, November 16, at Tetrick Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel, with the Rev. Bobby Stout and the Rev. Buddy Street officiating. OBITUARY:

ELIZABETHTON - Rev. Ray B. Scalf, Sr. age 74, Elizabethton, TN, went home to be with his Lord, on Saturday, October 7, 2006 at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital after a lengthy illness.

Rev. Scalf was a native and lifelong resident of Carter County. He was the son of George and Muriel Smithy Scalf.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, two brothers, Hazen and Junior Scalf and a son, Ray B. Scalf, Jr. Rev. Scalf was a veteran of the Korean War and received a Purple Heart while serving his country.

While in the military service, he excelled as an amateur boxer and was crowned United States All-Army Champion in the lightweight division during an International Tournament in Japan. As a local boxer he was considered one of Tennessee's best amateur boxers by winning numerous local and state titles. He was instrumental in the development of the Elizabethton Amateur Boxing Team and as a hobby, trained some of its members. Rev. Scalf started his newspaper career at the Elizabethton Star as a photographer and sports writer. He moved into the advertising department where he served as the Advertising Manager until his retirement. He was elected President of the Elizabethton Civitan Club for two terms and while club president, he and other club members seized the opportunity to construct the Elizabethton Civitan Park for the Handicapped, located off Highway 19E in Elizabethton, which continues to be enjoyed by many people today.

In 1973, Rev. Scalf was called into the ministry and was the founding pastor of Salvation Temple Freewill Baptist Church, where he served as pastor for over 26 years before retiring from the pulpit in 1999.

Rev. Scalf enjoyed several hobbies including drawing, painting freehand and reading, especially the Bible. He loved all sports especially professional boxing where from time to time he would participate as a judge at the Bristol Sports Arena.

Survivors include his wife and best friend of 55 years, Lillian Scalf of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Ron Scalf of Johnson City and Reggie and Kim Scalf of Elizabethton; one daughter and son-in-law Amanda and Steve Carr, Elizabethton; four grandchildren Joshua Scalf, Sheena Scalf, Tyler Scalf and Autumn Scalf; and one great-granddaughter, Ashiah Scalf. One sister, Brenda Hamilton, Johnson City; one brother Billy Smithy, Elizabethton; and several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

The funeral service for Rev. Scalf will be conducted on Tuesday, October 10, 2006 at 7:00 PM in the Chapel of Peace, Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with the Rev. James Richardson, Rev. Ron Owens and Rev. Bobby Stout officiating. Rev. Clarence Phillips, Rev. Elmer Carter, Rev. Phil Poston and Rev. Gary Roe will be honorary ministers. Music will be under the direction of Kenny and Kathy Lethcoe. The graveside service and interment will be Wednesday, October 11, 2006 at 11:00 AM at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Martin Pousa, Deacon Bowers, George Trent, Jack Campbell and Bob Carter and family members. Honorary pallbearers will be the past and present employees of the Elizabethton Star and members of the Salvation Temple Freewill Baptist Church. Those wishing to attend the graveside service will meet at the funeral home on Wednesday at 10:15 AM to go in procession to the cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-7:00 PM on Tuesday, prior to the service.

The family would like to extend its gratitude to Dr. Tony Katras, Dr. Daniel S. Rush, Dr. William Messerschmidt, Dr. Stephen Fahrig and Associates, Dr. Jeff Farrow, Dr. Julie Dunn, Dr. David Fenner and the staff of Johnson City Medical Center hospital. Their son Ruben, on the 1920 and 1930 census is David Ruben Scalf. A birth record in Carter County, Tennessee lists a David Scalf born September 28, 1908 to David and Rhoda Scalf. This child was born at the home of Adeline Obey, Oley, or Oney. The writing was somewhat illegible.

Rhoda might have been in Kent's home in 1930 due to an illness in the family. Kent's home was enumerated on April 10^th and Rhoda had gone back home by April 28^th when her home was enumerated.

Rosa and James divorced and Rosa remarried to Melvin Harless, brother of Monroe January 30, 1935 in Scott County, Virginia. Obituary for Gladys Dykes Scalf:

KINGSPORT - Gladys Dykes Scalf, 78, went to be with the Lord Thursday (March 25, 2004) at Brookhaven Manor following a lengthy illness.

Born in Sullivan County where she was a lifelong resident, Mrs. Scalf retired from Eastman Kodak in 1972 after 26 years of service.

She was a member of Visions Freewill Baptist Church.

Preceding her in death were her parents, J.L. "Jimmy" and Carrie Dykes; husband, Claude Scalf; two sisters, Nellie Dykes and Artie Darnell; and brother, Rev. Fred Dykes.

Surviving are two sons, Dale "Bill" Scalf and wife, Geraldine, Fall Branch, Don Scalf and wife, Lynn, Palm Coast, Fla.; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one uncle, Simon Forbes; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport and anytime at the home of a son at 110 Richards Lane, Fall Branch.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Orville Dolen and Rev. Roy Darnell officiating.

Burial will follow at Hilltop Mission Church Cemetery.

Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.

MemOral contributions may be given to the Kingsport Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 3952, Kingsport, Tenn. 37664.

Dorothy Scalf Depew stated to the author during our conversation that a lot of her family members lived near or in the area of Depew's Chapel and many were buried at Depew Chapel Cemetery.

OBITUARY OF DALE BILL SCALF

FALL BRANCH – Dale Bill Scalf, 63, of Fall Branch, passed away Friday (Feb. 2, 2007 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center. Bill retired from Phillips Consumer Electronics after over 30 years of service. He was a member of the Johnson Lodge and Jericho Shriners Temple. In May 2006, Bill accepted the Lord as his Savior. His parents, Claude and Gladys Scalf preceded him in death. Surviving are his wife, Geraldine, son Mike Cooke and wife, Barbara of Fall Branch; two grandchildren, Zachary and Zane; one brother, Don Scalf and wife, Lynn of Palm Coast, Fla; a niece, Jennifer, a nephew, Christopher; and an aunt, Julie Dykes. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 pm. Today at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. Services will follow at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home with Pastor Robert York and Rev. He was 21. Mary was listed as widowed and Clarence as single. She was the daughter of ____ (record faded) and Fannie Smallwood. Clarence was the son of J. D. Bear and Blamie Depew. Dorothy Depew stated that Henry and Frances Smallwood were the parents of Mary Jane Smallwood Scalf Bear.

Henry Scalf is listed as an uncle of McKinnley on the 1930 Sullivan County, Tennessee census but this was most likely Henry Smallwood, father of Mary Jane Smallwood Scalf. Note the age of Henry and the age of McKinnley. Henry was considerably older than McKinnley. Dorothy Depew stated that Mary Jane's father was Henry Smallwood. McKinley Scalf did not have a brother named Henry to anyone's knowledge and this was likely a mistake made by the enumerator when listing the household.

Solomon David Scalf, (AKA Bud) son of Dave Scalf and Susannah Smalling, was born October 11, 1862 and died December 1, 1934. Solomon David married Sarah Jane Ellen Sallie Emmert September 5, 1880 in Carter County, Tennessee. She was born September 1, 1864 and died April 3, 1946. She was the daughter of Jeremiah Emmert and Francis Moodie.
