MISCELLANEOUS SCALF FAMILIES
This chapter will cover the various Scalf families, including the Skelf family, that cannot be placed with an existing Scalf line. It is difficult to determine which line these folks may belong to and they have been placed in separate sections of the Miscellaneous Scalf Families chapter for this reason. There are a number of families in the Carter/Washington County, Tennessee area, as well as the McDonough County, Illinois area that could have been children of either Benjamin Scalf Sr. or David S. Scalf. The Skelf family is a small group from the Northern Georgia area. Also, the Scaff families of Davidson County, Tennessee and the Scalf families of Greenville, South Carolina will be discussed.

WILLIAM HENRY SCALF
of
Washington County, Tennessee
Logically, William Scalf in Washington County, Tennessee (1850 census) would be a strong consideration as a son of Lee Scalf due to the fact that Washington County, Tennessee and Russell County, Virginia are not very far from each other. Assuming that Lee Scalf died 1840-1850, along with the fact that William Henry Scalf first appears in Washington County, Tennessee in 1850 makes him a strong consideration for the son of Lee Scalf. We also have been unable to find anyone in the Washington County, Tennessee area that meets the criteria to have been the parents of William Henry Scalf, which also lends more support to the possibility of William Henry being a son of Lee Scalf. After the death of Lee, it would have been logical for his children to move to Washington County, Tennessee among relatives.
This William Scalf was born around 1832 in Virginia and moved to Washington County, Tennessee by 1850. He first appears in the home of George and Susan Crouch. Note the spelling of the last name Crouch.
Brittan Scalf, brother of Lee Scalf married Talitha Couch, daughter of Jeremiah Couch from Russell County, Virginia. The Couch and Crouch name has been interwoven in records much like the names Scalf and Scaff. It is possible they are the same family. However, it is just as possible they are not.
William does not appear to fit with any of the other East Tennessee families of Washington, Sullivan, Hawkins or Carter counties. The name William Henry Scalf was stated by a descendent of James Wesley Scalf. James Wesley was a son of this William and Drucilla Weddle Scalf.
There is much confusion concerning this William Scalf and we cannot verify that his name was actually William Henry; however, it is also reported that William and Drucilla had a son named Henry who drowned in the Nolichucky River in East Tennessee at a young age. If this is correct, then Henry might have been named for his father if his father's name was actually William Henry Scalf.
From the 1850 census of Washington County, Tennessee we first find William living in the home of George and Susan Crouch.

However, William does not appear on a census record after 1860 and this correlates with the information stated by Mrs. Gladys Weaver concerning his death in the Civil War.

Mrs. Gladys Weaver stated that Drucilla married a Miller in Johnson City (Washington County) Tennessee and the author has found that Drucilla married James M. Miller on November 7, 1885 in Washington County, TN and was listed on the 1900 census of Washington County, Tennessee. All the children in the home on the 1900 census were born before James and Drucilla were married. However, the Martha E. Miller in the 1900 census may be the daughter of Drucilla that is listed in the 1870 census above.

William Henry Scalf buried in KY. Married Drucilla Weddle. Born in VA
James Wesley Scalf born May 12, 1862 in Sullivan County, Buried in Happy Valley Memorial Gardens between Elizabethton & Johnson City, TN married Margaret Lee Temple Born Apr. 8, 1865 in Greenville, TN Buried in Happy Valley Memorial Gardens between Elizabethton & Johnson City, TN.
1) William Henry was a runner for the North in the Civil War, was caught and shot as a spy.
2) Drucilla Whettle Scalf had to let the children stay with others after William Henry Scalf died. Years later she married a Miller in Johnson City (Knob Creek Section).
3) Angie Rhud Scalf's brothers are M. T. of Knoxville, and Lawrence Lacey (he said Lacey Lawrence) Scalf of San Diego, CA. Her half-brother is Rollie (Raleigh?) Miller and half-sister is Eula Mae Miller (married Jack R. Weaver).
4) James Wesley Scalf came from VA at age 6. He was a policeman in Johnson City, TN and opened a store and restaurant and met his wife there. He and his brothers and sisters (as yet unidentified) lived with the Sellers family and all took the Sellers name except James Wesley. His older brother Henry lived with a strict religious family, the Dunkards, until age 21. Henry drowned in the Nolichucky River.
5) A phone conversation with Lacey Lawrence Scalf, revealed that he was a bachelor and his birthday was Oct. 12, 1896. He said his father was James Wesley Scalf and mother Maggie
Temple, thus providing her nickname. He provided the information about the children living with the Sellers and that James Wesley had a brother Henry. Lacy also stated that his grandfather was killed in the battle of Richmond, VA, which supports the comments of Ms. Weaver. (Bob Scalf Interview with Mrs. Gladys Lee Ledford Weaver, Oak Ridge, TN 1967)
Mrs. Weaver stated that William Henry Scalf was killed in the Civil War as a runner for the North. Mr. Lacey Lawrence Scalf stated he was killed in the battle of Richmond.
Census records confirm that William probably had died for he was not found after 1860. Mrs. Weaver also stated that James Wesley Scalf came from Virginia at the age of 6; however, if William Henry was the son of Lee Scalf then it was likely William that came from Virginia at age 6 instead of his son, James Wesley, for William married in Washington County, Tennessee August 3, 1860 to Drucilla Weddle. Henry was living with the William Devault family and was living in the same district as the Ruben Sellars family. James Wesley, brother of Henry was living with the Sellars family. In the home of William Devault is a Mary May, 19 years old and born 1861. This could have been a daughter of William and Drucilla and her middle name may have been listed on the census as a surname if in fact, William and Drucilla had any daughters.
Henry's brother James Wesley Scalf was living with Rueben Sellars in 1880 Washington County, Tennessee in the same district as his brother Henry.

JAMES WESLEY SCALF
Son of
William Henry Scalf & Drucilla A. Weddle
James Wesley Scalf, son of William Henry Scalf and Drucilla A. Weddle was born May 12, 1862 probably in Washington County Tennessee. James married Margaret (Maggie) Lee Temple Miller Scalf July 6, 1893 in Washington County, Tennessee. Maggie was born April 8, 1865 and died January 8, 1941 in Washington County, Tennessee. Maggie was married to Alp (A.P.) Miller prior to her marriage to James and had two children by this marriage; Raleigh and Eula Miller.
(Link to photograph of Alp Miller and Maggie Temple)
(Link to death certificate of James Wesley Scalf)
(Link to death certificate of Maggie Lee Scalf)
Mrs. Weaver stated that they did not know the names of James Wesley's brothers and sisters. There were other people living in the home of Wm. Devault but all were servants and are not listed in these writings for they appear to bear no relationship to the family.
A female named Jane F. Harvey was living in the home and was listed as 16 years old. This was the only other child in the home that might have been near enough to the age of another child to belong to William and Drucilla. However, we doubt she was a child of William and Drucilla Weddle Scalf.
James and Maggie are both buried at Happy Valley Memorial Gardens in Washington County, Tennessee. James was a policeman in Johnson City (Washington Co) Tennessee.
If William Henry Scalf was killed in the Civil War he would have died sometime between May of 1862 and 1865, a total of approximately three years. James Wesley's stated date of birth was May 12, 1862, and it was stated he had an older brother. If so, the brother would have been born between August 1860 and May 1862.
Mrs. Weaver stated that after William's death his wife had to let the children stay with others. How many children? Could there have been more than two children in this family? James Wesley stated his siblings were raised under the Sellars name and continued to use that name; however, if his father died 1862-1865 during the war, we see no way there could have been more than two children. Possibly three, but doubtful there were more.
We have no way of knowing when William died but we do know he died during the Civil War, which ended in 1865. Therefore, we can only speculate that there were at least two children; James Wesley and a brother Henry mentioned above by Mrs. Weaver as being the oldest brother of James Wesley. Henry drowned in the Nolichucky River at a young age but we do not know what that age was.
The 1880 census of Washington County, Tennessee shows a Henry Sclaf (Scalf) living with the William O. Devault family. His age was 17 years old and his estimated birth date would have been 1863. If Henry drowned in the Nolichucky River then this is likely the same Henry Scalf. The Devault family lived near the Nolichucky River.
It is possible that another child was born in 1864 or 1865; however, it is not likely that anymore were born before William died.
Children of Maggie Lee Templeton Miller and her first husband:
1) Raleigh Miller - born about 1888. Raleigh died in Savannah, Georgia and is buried at Happy Valley Memorial Gardens in Washington County, Tennessee.
2) Eula Mae Miller - born about 1891 (deceased). Eula married Jack R. Weaver.

The following information was researched and compiled after an email from Terry Sue Shanks of Georgia to the Scalf Family website concerning a Henry (possibly Wm. Henry Scalf):
Sarah Rowena Collins & Henry SCALF (possibly William H. SCALF)
“I am researching the family tree of a childhood friend of mine. Her maternal grandmother was Lucy (Lula) SCALF, born in Missouri (I'm pretty sure) in 1886. Lucy (Lula) SCALF (who married John D. Bryan -- born June 14, 1882) and her sister, Ida SCALF, were the daughters of a Henry SCALF (who was probably born sometime between 1867 and 1870) and Sarah Rowena Collins (who was most likely born in 1870 -- possibly in Tennessee). It gets tricky right here because Sarah Rowena Collins' and Henry SCALF's second daughter was born a few months AFTER Henry SCALF died (approximately 1887) and Lula's and Ida's mother, Sarah Rowena Collins SCALF, soon married (perhaps even before Henry SCALF's second daughter was born) a Walter Sharrett (not sure of correct spelling) of Virginia. Mr. Walter Sharrett evidently raised Lula and Ida -- along with several Sharrett children from his first marriage -- and several other children who were born to him and Sarah Rowena Collins SCALF.
“I THINK Sarah Rowena Collins & Henry SCALF (possibly William H. SCALF) were married in Tennessee in 1885.
“I would genuinely appreciate receiving any information you might have regarding any of the above SCALF relatives.
“Thank you.
“Sincerely, Terry Sue Shank, GEORGIA”
After reading the information from Ms. Shank, the author and Virgil Scalf undertook a research into the names mentioned above in her request. The author had collected a marriage license for Henry Scalf and Rowena Collins many years prior to these writings.
A Henry Scalf married Rowena Collins in 1885 Washington County, Tennessee as mentioned by Ms. Shank. Legend from Mrs. Gladys Weaver of Knoxville, Tennessee stated that her husband's ancestor, William Henry Scalf married Drucilla Weddle in Washington County, Tennessee, served in the Civil War and was killed as a runner for the North.
Mr. Lacey Lawrence Scalf, a son of James Wesley Scalf and Maggie Lee (Temple) Miller Scalf stated that William Henry Scalf who married Drucilla Weddle was killed at the battle of Richmond, Virginia during the Civil War.
The author knows of no other William or Henry Scalf among the East Tennessee Scalf family that could fit the description given of these folks. Therefore, it is the opinion of the author that Henry Scalf who married Rowena Collins was the son of William Henry Scalf and Drucilla Weddle and probably named for his father. Henry Scalf had a brother James Wesley Scalf, but the author has been unable to confirm any further siblings in this family although it was stated by James Wesley that there were others.
William Henry Scalf was born about 1832 (family stated in Virginia). William was found living in the home of George Crouch in 1850 Washington County, Tennessee where he first appears on census records. By 1860, William is still in the Crouch home and Drucilla Weddle is also listed there as a servant, as well as William. This couple married in 1860 Washington Co. TN.
If William was killed in the Civil War, he most likely enlisted around 1862. The war had ended by 1865 and he had most likely been killed 1862-1865. In fact, Drucilla was found in 1880 in the home of George Fain as a servant and widowed. Their son, James Wesley Scalf was living in the home of Rueben Sellars and Henry was living in the home of William Devault as servants. The author believes this Henry married Sarah Rowena Collins in Washington County, Tennessee in 1885 and several years later drowned in the Nolichucky River leaving Rowena with two children, Ida and Lucy. The following census records represent the family of Henry Scalf and Rowena Collins Scalf. Rowena remarried to Walter W. Sharrett after the death of Henry.
Interestingly, it appear that Sarah Rowena Collins Scalf was the daughter of Conoway Collins who is believed to have been a son of Nancy Scalf Collins, daughter of John Scalf, Sr. She was found in the home of Conoway in 1880 Hancock Co. TN, along with her brother Charles, who was living with Rowena and her new husband in 1900.

Henry Scalf probably died sometime shortly after 1887 when his daughter Lula was born. Note that both his children were born in Missouri, suggesting that Henry and Rowena had moved to Missouri after their marriage and probably then moved back to East Tennessee where he drowned in the Nolichucky River sometime around 1887-1890. Rowena then married Walter W. Sharrett 1887-1890 and had more children with Mr. Sharrett.

SCALF/SCAFF
DAVIDSON COUNTY, TENNESSEE
The Scalfs and Scaffs of Davidson County, Tennessee have been very hard to place in the scheme of things. Henry Scalf did not discuss the Scalfs/Scaffs of Davidson County, Tennessee in his book,
Chronicles of the Scalf Family. However, Elmer Scalf briefly touched on this group of Scalfs/Scaffs on page 12 in his book, Scalf Family History.
We are able to follow this family group back to the 1850 census without much difficulty, but the census records before 1850 do not provide much detailed information at a critical time in the lives of James and Monroe Scaff/Scalf. As you will see in many cases, Scaff and Scalf are used interchangeably in the census records depending on the enumerator and how much he or she was familiar with the family name. James and Monroe Scaff/Scalf appear to be brothers, but, at the moment, the parents of the two men are hard to identify. As was covered above on page 12 of Scalf Family History, it does look like John and Temperance Scalf of North Carolina were their parents, but John Scalf, Jr., the son of John Scalf, Sr. - the Revolutionary War Soldier, also looks like a candidate.
JAMES SCALF/SCAFF
Brother of
Monroe Scalf/Scaff
James Scalf married Lucinda Creech a few months before he married Catherine Beard. The marriage to Lucinda occurred on April 10, 1850 and a short time later, on July 10, 1850, James married Catherine Bread. At the moment, we do not know what happened to Lucinda Creech.
Catherine Beard was born on January 24, 1830 and died on February 22, 1921.

“My father was born in 1899. I was born March 7, 1927, and I am 79 now. My mother died a few months after I was born. My father placed me in St. Mary's orphanage in Nashville Tenn. My father hoboes around the country. He may have been gone from Nashville at that time. I was 3 in 1930. But he spent most of his entire life in Nashville Tn. He lived to be 78. My grand-parents on my father side were all dead before I was born. My father was married three times. He and his first wife had a baby girl that only lived for a short time. I was the only child my mother (2nd wife) had before she died. My father and his third wife had a son names Willie Scalf. Everyone call him Billie. He died at about age 46. They all lived in Nashville. My father had six brothers one of them name John had 11 children. My father and his brother John married two sisters who's last name were Carney. They lived just outside of Nashville at a place called Whites' Creek which is about 10 miles from downtown Nashville. I have written a book. It is kind of a biography of my own life.
“My father had six brothers. One died young. My father was the oldest born in 1899. They were John, Willie, Edd Clarence, Marion and my father Joe. They all lived most of their lives in and around Nashville Tenn. One of his brothers Marion is still living and is 96. He lives in Nashville.” - 2006

JAMES MONROE SCALF
Son of
James Scalf & Catharine Beard
James M.<James Scalf
James Monroe Scalf was born on January 22, 1855 in Davidson County, Tennessee. He died of a coronary occlusion and chronic tuberculosis on January 20, 1939 in at the home of William Willie
Bush Curtis at 316 Grace Avenue, Nashville, Tennessee. In 1880 he was a florist/caretaker at the Mount Olivet Cemetery in Nashville, Tennessee. He lived in Mount Olivet, Nashville, Tennessee for a while, and then moved to a field on Murfreesboro Road and later back to a larger house in Mount Olivet. After a period of time, James moved to University Street when daughter Minnie Mai was fifteen years old. Then he moved to Carroll Street where his daughter Ruth Estelle Scalf died at age twenty. Grandmas Scalf (James' mother), William and Aunt Ellen also died there. James was sick with pneumonia at the time; so they pushed Grandma Scalf's casket into his room so he could see her. James M. Scalf worked as a florist for thirty-five years. James Monroe Scalf and Minerva Patilla Williams were married on October 24, 1880. He was buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Nashville, Tennessee.

Minerva Williams was born on 24 Apr 1859 in Nashville, Tennessee. Minerva's full name was Minerva Patilla Williams. My mother has her cast iron griddle in her kitchen. She does not use it as it is too worn to be of any use. Minerva died of asthma with a cerebral hemorrhage on June 22, 1932 at 1505 Cahal Avenue (pronounced Kay-hall), Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee. She was buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Nashville, Tennessee. (Courtesy - Joel Buckner)

Scalf was born February 1, 1882 and died January 7, 1926. Bessie married Edward R. Roseacher (1879-1918). Roseacher is pronounced Rose-ocker.(ock
like in sock
). I have heard it pronounced so many different ways; so, I thought I would just make sure. (Courtesy - Joel Buckner)
Apparently, Bessie married again in the 1920s to a Roark or this is another way to spell Roseacher. (Link to death certificate)

Bush Curtis. He was born December 28, 1892 in TN and died September 9, 1971 in TN. After the death of William Curtis, Minnie Curtis moved to California and is living in a nursing home at the time of her death. Minnie Mai Scalf caught the flu from the staff at her nursing home. The flu developed into pneumonia, which was the cause of her death. Several other nursing home residents and employees (including the employee who started the problem) died in pretty much the same way within a two-week period.
Minnie Mai's funeral services were conducted at Hibbett & Hailey Funeral Home, Nashville, Tennessee, with son-in-law Thomas Buckner and Dr. Bob Crumby officiating. She was buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Nashville, Tennessee.

Monroe J.<Monroe Scalf
Monroe Scaff, Jr., the son of Monroe Scaff and Francis Baker, is living with his parents in the 1870 census. However, he does not appear in the census again until 1920. Since the 1920 census is very hard to read, it cannot be determined whether he is listed as a widower or is divorced. At some point after the 1870 census, Monroe leaves Nashville, Tennessee and moves to Dallas, Texas. The bits and pieces of information that have surfaced during the 1890s point to a marriage between Monroe Scaff and Isabella Cheek.
Isabella is living in the home of her parents during the 1870 census, and she is 14 years old.

In the 1900 census, Isabella Scaff is living next door to the family of H. M. Cheek. Isabella's mother, Mary Cheek, is living in the home. It appears that Isabella was married to a Downwright during the 1879-1880 time period. Later, it appears that Monroe and Isabella were married between 1886-1887. Many times in the past, individuals were listed on the census as widowed when, in fact, they were divorced. This appears to be the relationship between Monroe and Isabella, since Monroe is living with his sister and is listed as divorced.

THOMAS SKELF
The family names of Scalf, Scealf and Skelf can be found in Northeastern Georgia during the early to middle 1800s. There appears to be a connection between the Scalfs in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia with the Skelf family in Georgia. Also, William Scalf, the son of Lewis Scalf, moved from North Caroline to Greenville, South Carolina and later to Habersham County, Georgia around 1830. During this period, Scalf was spelled Scalf, Scealf, and Skelf.
The parents of Thomas Skelf have not been identified at this time. Thomas Skelf was born about 1865 in North Carolina. He married Nancy Josephine Hizelup. Later, Thomas and Josephine were separated or he was too sick to travel, since Josephine Skelf is living in Whitfield County, Georgia near the Tennessee border with their children and a boarder when the 1910 census was taken. Thomas Skelf died December 13, 1913 in Swain County, North Carolina. During the time between the 1910 and 1920 censuses, Josephine marries a Harris, but she is listed on the 1920 census as divorced.
By the early 1900s, several outstanding claims against the United States Government had been filed by the Cherokee Indians. On June 30, 1906, the U. S. Congress approved $1,000,000 for payment of those claims, and on August 24, 1907, Nancy Josephine Skelf filed an application for a share of this money. This application (Page 1 Page 2 Page 3) provides an invaluable look into the life of Josephine Skelf. Josephine was born December 23, 1865 as an only child and was raised as an orphan. Josephine's father, John Russell, was killed in the Civil War in 1865. Even though Josephine's application was rejected due to a lack of evidence, the Native American features of some of her descendants speak volumes about her ancestry.
Children of Thomas Skelf and Josephine Hizelup:
1) Julia Skelf - born October 10, 1887
2) Andrew Ellis Skelf - born February 11, 1890
3) Laura Skelf - born February 14, 1893
4) Sarah Etta Skelf - born April 24, 1895
5) Edmond (Edward) Skelf - born January 11, 1898
6) Eliza Skelf - born September 24, 1899
T. Skelf, in the 1880 census below, is a strong candidate for a young Thomas Skelf. According to the death certificate of Thomas Skelf, he was about 20 years old in 1880, but the date on the death certificate was a general date (about 1860) and not very accurate. However, in the application filed by Josephine on August 24, 1907, she stated that Thomas was 41 years old. In this case, Thomas was born about 1865 or very close to the birth date on the census record, and he died in Swain County, North Carolina on December 13, 1913. Since Thomas is living in Swain Co, NC as a young boy and was living in the same county at the time of his death, it would appear that Thomas has strong family ties to this area.
(Link to Thomas Skelf death certificate)
Unfortunately, Thomas Skelf has not been found before or after the 1880 census. Also, the fact that he is living with another family is troublesome. However, the parents of Thomas may be dead, and H. P. and Martha Brindle may be relatives.

MALINDA SCALF and WILLIAM L. CASH
Malinda Scalf and William L. Cash were married March 17, 1836 in Washington County, Tennessee. Very little is known of this family and research is ongoing. What is known comes from the 1850 Carter County, Tennessee census.
William Cash was born about 1812 in Tennessee. His wife, Malinda, was born about 1815 in Tennessee. They are listed on the 1850 Tennessee census with the following children. All birth dates are estimated from this census. All of the members of this family were listed as born in Tennessee. The Cash family was also found in Roane County, Tennessee and moving on to Middle Tennessee. This may be another reason why John Francis Scalf went to the Memphis area to live. It appears that Malinda Scalf Cash and her husband remained in the Carter/Washington County area, but some of her husband's family moved on.

Joanna Scalf, another possible sister of Jonah, is reported to have married Frank Maine and lived in the Illinois area. No further information is found on this family.
Elizabeth Scalf married Maranda White November 8, 1860 in Washington County, Tennessee. Since this marriage is later than the others, it could be a second marriage or Elizabeth was a possible child of one of the families above. She may possibly have been a granddaughter of David S. Scalf of Carter County, Tennessee. Very little is known about this Elizabeth.
One Elizabeth Scalf and her husband are reported to have been killed by Indians and her children went to live with Rebecca Scalf and James Hankle/Hinkle in Illinois. However, no records have been found to confirm this statement. It does appear however that she could be the Betsy Scalf from the 1850 Washington County, Tennessee census with children, Phebe and Dan (Possibly, Daniel Wesley?).
These families are very puzzling and there seems to be references to both the David and Benjamin lines that are similar. It does seem unlikely that David S. Scalf would have had only four or five children while John Sr., and Benjamin had such large families. However, not enough proof has been forthcoming on either of these families to be able to properly place all of the children correctly.
Mahala Scalf, another family in the Carter/Washington County, Tennessee area married twice; first, to William Moon of Washington County, Tennessee and second to James Moore of the same area. No further information has been found on William or James and Mahala. There was a movement of the Moon family to the area of Sevierville, Tennessee, then to Roan County, Tennessee and Barbara finds a large amount of them in the Memphis area. However, it is unknown if these families were the family of William Moon. No information is known of Mahala's second husband, James Moore, or where this family went. One James Moore and family resided in the Carter County area but it is unknown if this is the same family.
