CELIA ANN (SELA) SCALF
Daughter of
John Scalf, Sr. & Edeah Carlisle
Celia A<John Scalf Sr<Lewis Scalf
Celia Ann Scalf (aka Cealy and Sela) was born (according to census records) 1820-1825. Scalf Family History, page 180, lists Sela as being born 1821-1823. If Celia Ann was the last child born to John Scalf, Sr. and Edeah Carlisle Scalf, she was most likely born in Russell County, Virginia because this is where her family was living1820-1830. Sela was probably named for her aunt Ceely Ann Keziah (also listed in some records as Coziah) Scalf, wife of Benjamin Scalf, a brother to her father John Scalf, Sr.
Of Sela's life, we know nothing until her marriage in 1836. We have reason to believe that her mother, Edeah (Edy) Carlisle Scalf was living with her in Knox County, Kentucky shortly before they both died.
It has been reported that Edy Carlisle Scalf was living with her son, Ira, in Knox County, Kentucky before her death; however, the author feels that Edy most likely stayed alternately with her children in Knox County as was customary for the times. Some records suggest she was in the home of her son, Peter Scalf, for a short time and other records suggest she was with her daughter, Sela Scalf Lockard, shortly before Sela died May 29, 1859. (Link to Celia A. Lockard death information)
We first find information on the person we believe to have been Celia (Sela) Ann Scalf, (also known as Cealy Ann) from the marriage bond for her marriage in 1836 Clay County, Kentucky. Although it could be questionable whether this was John senior or junior s mark on the bond, the author and Virgil Scalf both agree that this was John Scalf, Sr.
In support of this, we refer back to the marriage of Peter and Robert Scalf in October of 1835 in Clay County where their father, John Scalf, Sr. signed consent for their marriages. Logically, if their father signed consent for them in Clay County in October of 1835, he was likely still in Clay County in April of 1836 to sign the marriage bond and consent for his daughter, Celia (Sela) Ann Scalf. He was also missing from the tax list of Russell County, Virginia where he had been living until his move to Clay County, Kentucky sometime between the collection of the Russell County taxes in 1835 and the marriage of his sons in October of 1835 in Clay County, Kentucky. John was then missing from the 1836 Russell County, Virginia tax list, and was not found in Tennessee. However, a John Scalf does appear on the 1836 Clay County, Kentucky tax list and we feel certain this was John Sr. and not his son, John Jr. We also have found no evidence to suggest there was another Cealy Ann Scalf of this time frame in the Kentucky/Tennessee/Virginia area.
The most significant factor in determining that the signer of this marriage bond was John Scalf, Sr., is the mark made on Page 1 of the marriage bond of Cealy Ann Scalf. John Scalf signed his mark on the marriage bond with a (J) instead of the (X) most commonly used. We believe this mark confirms the signer (John Scalf) to have been none other than John Scalf, Sr.
In further support of this conclusion, note on Page 2 of the marriage bond
the statement by Mr. Kinningham, BY PERSONAL CONSENT OF THE FATHER of Cealy Ann
Scalf.
In order for her father to give personal consent for this marriage, her
father had to be present in Clay County, Kentucky April 6, 1836.
The signature on the declaration given at the courthouse in Hawkins County, Tennessee around 1838-1839 also lends support to the theory that the John Scalf that signed the marriage bond in Clay County, Kentucky was also the same John Scalf that signed the Military Declaration of Revolutionary War Service in Hawkins County, Tennessee. This John Scalf signed by mark (J) on both documents.
From the research of prior authors, we learn that John Scalf, Sr. and Edeah Carlisle Scalf were the parents of 16 children. The last child born to them was Celia Ann (Cealy) Scalf. We have found no other Cealy/Sela/Ceely/Celia Ann Scalf that fits the same timeframe as this Cealy Ann Scalf, and we feel certain that she was the daughter of John and Edeah Carlisle Scalf.
However, the most confusing information from the marriage bond is the name of
the future husband of Cealy Ann Scalf. Her husband to be,
is listed as Thomas
HUBBARD on the marriage bond and not Thomas LOCKARD. We know from other records
that Cealy Ann Scalf was the wife of Thomas Lockard.

We know that Celia Ann Scalf, daughter of John Scalf, Sr., married Thomas
Lockard/Lockhard/Lockhart. Of this we have no doubt due to the pension file
of Thomas Lockard/Lockhard/Lockhart. In the pension file his deceased wife
was named as Sela Scalf, and we know that Celia Ann Scalf (daughter of John
Scalf Sr.) was known as Sela. (Pension File of Thomas Lockard - Courtesy

Cealy Ann should have been 15-17 years old at the time of her marriage in 1836, which coincides with the age of Celia Ann Scalf, daughter of John Scalf, Sr.; however, if Cealy Ann Scalf married Thomas Lockard, then who was Cealy Ann Scalf that married Thomas Hubbard in 1836 Clay County, Kentucky?
The author cannot offer much in the way of speculation concerning this matter, because Celia Ann Scalf, daughter of John Scalf, Sr. was the only Celia (Cealy/Sela) Ann Scalf known to the family of this particular date.
In the book, Scalf Family History, by Elmer Scalf, Elmer states that Ann Scalf, daughter of John Scalf, Jr., married Thomas Hubbard in 1836 Clay County, Kentucky. However, in his book, Ann Scalf is listed with a birth year of around 1811. This is the only reference to a daughter of John Scalf, Jr. with the name "Ann" that the author has been able to find. Elmer does not state how he arrived at the conclusion that Ann was a daughter of John Scalf, Jr.
Elmer did, however, ask the author in our correspondence from 1989, if
the author thought that Ann could have been the daughter of John Scalf, Jr.
At the time of Elmer's question, the author had not studied the Clay County
records, nor very many of the early family records and could not offer a
reasonable opinion on this matter. Elmer stated in his letter that he was
not sure who this Ann Scalf was. The author cannot determine in 2008 who
this Ann Scalf might have been nor where the record of Ann Scalf
could
have been located that caused Elmer to think this was a daughter of John
Scalf, Jr. The only record found at this point, is a marriage bond for Cealy
Ann Scalf and Thomas Hubbard and from all appearances could only have been
the daughter of John Scalf, Sr.
Cealy Ann Scalf is the only Ann Scalf
found in Clay County, Kentucky
with a marriage in 1836; therefore, the author must conclude that Elmer was
confused and speculated this to be the daughter of John Scalf, Jr.
At this date (2008) the author has found no evidence to suggest that this was a daughter of John Scalf, Jr., or that John Scalf, Jr., had a daughter born around 1811 although it certainly was not impossible. The evidence strongly suggests this was Celia Ann (Sela) Scalf, daughter of John Scalf, Sr. and a sister to John Scalf, Jr., rather than his daughter.
In 1837, John was missing from Clay County and was likely in Hawkins County, Tennessee where he applied for his Revolutionary Pension. His son, John Jr. is probably the John Scalf that appeared on the tax list in Russell County, Virginia in 1837 and 1838, moving down to Hawkins County, Tennessee by 1839.
Note that only one John Scalf appears on the 1836 Clay County, Kentucky tax list and is missing in 1837. On the 1837 Russell County, Virginia tax list, a John Scalf appears; however, it is believed that this was John Scalf, Jr. In his depositions for a military pension at Rogersville, Tennessee (Hawkins Co) John Sr. made the statement that he had moved from Clay County, Kentucky to Hawkins County, Tennessee although he did not state at what time this took place. The author believes this to have taken place sometime after the marriage bond of Celia Ann Scalf in Clay County, Kentucky and the enumeration of the tax list of the year 1836.
1836 and 1837 Clay County, Kentucky Tax Lists:
1836 Clay Robert Scalf
Clay Peter Scalf
Clay John Scalf
Clay Jesse Scalf
Clay Ira Scalf
1837 Clay Robert Scalf
Clay Jesse Scalf
Clay Peter Scalf
The author can only offer speculation as to what might have happened in Clay
County, the day John Scalf signed the marriage bond and gave consent for
his daughter's marriage to Thomas Hubbard.
2. Thomas Lockard was born Thomas Hubbard and later took the Lockard name or vice-versa.
3. The clerk made a mistake concerning the surname of Thomas Lockard in Clay County, Kentucky that day.
The author would appreciate any information - if anyone knows - concerning why Thomas Lockard was listed as Thomas Hubbard on this marriage record.
It should be noted here that the name LOCKARD can be found under various spellings in the records. LOCKARD - LOCKHARD - LOCKHART - LOCKERT- LOCKHERD, and even LOCHARD, just to mention a few. However, Joseph Lockard, a son of Thomas and his second wife, Alzya, stated that LOCKARD is the correct spelling.
The spelling of CELIA will also be found with various spellings in the records. CELY -CELIA - CEELY - CEALY - SEALY- SELY and SELA, among others. Cealy is the spelling listed on her marriage bond.
It is the belief of the author that Sela Ann Scalf Lockard was probably
named for her aunt, Ceely Ann Keziah Scalf, wife of her uncle Benjamin
Scalf. However, we have no confirming records to determine which would be
the correct spelling of Ceely Ann Keziah Scalf or Cealy Ann Scalf. The
author has used the spelling Cealy
in this document for Celia Ann Scalf
Lockard.
Two years after the marriage of Thomas and Cealy Ann, around December of
1838 in Hawkins County, Tennessee, Thomas Lockard made a statement in
support of the pension for his father-in-law John Scalf, Sr. In this
statement Thomas stated that, he had known John Scalf, Sr. for three
years.
(Chapter VII - Part 4 - John Scalf, Sr. - The Hawkins County
Years-Scalf Family in America-Scalf Family Website).
If Thomas Lockard had been acquainted with the Scalf family for three years, this estimates a marriage date of Thomas and Cealy Ann around 1835-1836 and Cealy Ann would have only been around 14-15 years old if born in 1823. Only one Thomas Lockard is found in Hawkins Co. Tennessee in 1840, which would have been two years after his statement in support of his father-in-law's pension. If this is correct, Thomas and Cealy Ann's first child could have been born 1836 - 1838.
From the 1850 census of Knox County, Kentucky, we find Thomas and Cealy Ann with a son James M. Lockhard born 1837. The years do appear to coincide with the date Thomas gave in his deposition in support of the pension of John Scalf, Sr.
Three years after the signing of the marriage bond by Thomas Hubbard to
marry Cealy Ann Scalf, Thomas Lockard signed a statement for John Scalf,
Sr., in Hawkins County, Tennessee. Thomas Hubbard could not write and likely
could not read. He signed his mark with an X that day in Clay County,
Kentucky and the clerk might have made a mistake in writing Thomas*apos; surname
without Thomas knowing his name was signed as HUBBARD.
In 1840, a Thomas Lockhart/Lockard was found living in Hawkins County, Tennessee and the author believes this was the same Thomas Lockard/Lockhard who made a deposition in support of his father-in-law's pension (John Scalf, Sr.) in 1838-39 at the courthouse in Rogersville, Tennessee.
The author has added names to the following census as speculation only until further proof can be provided to confirm that this is the family of Thomas Lockard and Sela Ann Scalf Lockard.
Keep in mind that Thomas and Sela married in 1836. Their son, James Madison Lockard, was born (1850 census) about 1837.

The Squires Ledger from Hawkins County, Tennessee listing the school population of 1844 -1846 shows that Thomas Lockard and family were still living in Hawkins County, Tennessee in the 2d Civil District during 1845 and 1846, and had one child of school age. Their son, James Madison Lockard, would certainly have been of school age in 1845.
Thomas was not listed in this ledger after the year 1846 and it is assumed he had moved back to Kentucky at this time.

Considering the affidavit of Thomas Lockard for John Scalf, Sr., along with the scholastic population of Hawkins County, Tennessee, we can assume that Thomas was probably living in Hawkins County, Tennessee from December of 1838 or 39 until at least 1846. He did not appear on the Hawkins County, Tennessee records after 1846.
In 1850, Thomas and Sela were found in Knox County, Kentucky with a family of five children. Hiter or Heiter is listed as a male on this census but it has been stated by some Lockard descendents that Hiter was a female. We have no information on Hiter to clarify this at this time.

Note the five-year span between the births of James and Noah in 1850. This time span indicates there could have been one or two children born/died during this time. In 1851, Thomas had five children listed at home on the tax list, which coincides with the 1850 census.
Thomas was found on the tax list of Knox County, Kentucky in 1850. It appears that Thomas did live out his life in Knox County, Kentucky for he was not found in Hawkins County, Tennessee after 1846.

By 1859, once again there are four children in the home indicating that another child had been born 1858 - 1859. Thomas was the only male listed over 21 years of age on this tax list. This tax list reveals that Thomas and Sela had a total of seven children by 1859. This was the year that Sela died. However, we have no way of knowing if Sela was living when the tax list was taken or if she had died. We have no date for the tax list but Sela died in May of this year.

Cealy (Sela) Ann Scalf Lockhard/Lockard/Lockhart died May 23, 1859 in Knox County, Kentucky. Her cause of death is unknown for we have been unable to obtain a death record for Sela Ann. It is thought that she might have died in childbirth or due to complications of childbirth; however, we cannot confirm this. It is believed that her mother (Edy Carlisle Scalf) was also living in the home when Sela Ann died. The pension file of Thomas Lockard confirms Sela Ann's death date from several depositions made by various folks.

The Kentucky Register also records the death of someone whom the author believes to have been Celia Ann Scalf Lockard. The spelling of Clien is listed and is believed to have been a misspelling of Celia. Thomas Lockard is also listed beneath the name on page 185. The surname is spelled Lockerd in the registry. The pension file of Thomas Lockard confirms in several documents the same date of death for Sela Ann Scalf Lockard that appears on the Kentucky Register under the spelling of Clien Lockard, which also lends support to the fact that this is likely the same person. Her father's name is listed in the Kentucky Register as John Scalf from Virginia.

The 1859 tax list shows four children between the ages of 6 and 16 still in the home of Thomas Lockard. The 1860 tax list suggests that another child had been born for Thomas is now listed with five children in the home. The 1860 census reveals that Sarah Jane was born about 1857.
Since Noah did not marry until 1862, we must assume that he was one of the four children in the home in 1859 and again on the 1860 tax list. The 1860 census shows Noah in the home. However, the tax list states "children between the ages of 6 and 16," and from census records Noah appeared to be over the age of 16. Therefore, we can only speculate that another child was born before 1860. There have been no other children found, however.

The Civil War brought turmoil for the country and Thomas, as did others, answered the call to battle. Thomas had lost his wife and probably left his children in the care of relatives when he joined Company I of the 7th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry (Union Forces). Thomas enlisted August 20, 1861 and was discharged March 7, 1863.

The war had left Thomas disabled and sometime in the early 1880's Thomas applied for pension benefits from his service for his disability. Although the author cannot find a specific date for this filing, a document in the pension file of Thomas states that Thomas was denied benefits on September 29, 1885. It was stated on the document that Thomas was denied for a fractured clavicle and chronic diarrhea. However, it was learned from the pension file of his son, Daniel Lockard, that the records of Thomas and Daniel had apparently been confused. Thomas did not have a fractured clavicle but did have chronic diarrhea.

Thomas' Declaration for a Pension states that Thomas was 65 years old. The date of this document is simply 188__. The last number was not included and the date may have been 1880. In this document it is stated that Thomas fell from his horse and had a broken collarbone and chronic diarrhea. H. H. Hunter, Clerk of the Circuit Court of Knox County, Tennessee, submitted this document.

THOMAS LOCKARD
Son of
James Madison Lockard & Sarah Jones
Thomas<James<Celia A.<John Scalf Sr<Lewis Scalf
Thomas Lockard, son of James Madison and Sarah Jones Lockard, was born August 1870. Thomas was, no doubt, named for his grandfather Thomas Lockard. Thomas was found on the 1900 census of Breathitt County, Kentucky with his family. His wife was Sarah (maiden name unknown). This family was followed on the census records through 1930.
Thomas' wife, Sarah, stated on the 1910 census that she had been married twice. Thomas and Sarah had been married nine years in 1900, which estimates a marriage date of 1891. In 1900, Thomas and Sarah had three children born with three living. In 1910, Sarah stated she had nine children born with nine living. However, there were only six children in the home in 1910 and we assume Sarah had three other children before her marriage to Thomas that were not living with them.
By 1920, Sarah was widowed and listed as head of house. Thomas had died 1910-1920. Sarah and their daughter Mary Caroline were living with Thomas and Sarah's son, James William Lockard in 1930. Caroline had married at 19 years old but a husband does not appear with her in 1930.

DANIEL (DON) LOCKARD
Son of
Thomas
Lockard & Celia Scalf
Daniel Lockard<Celia Scalf<John Sr<Lewis Scalf
Daniel Lockard, also known as "Don," was the son
of Thomas and Celia Ann Scalf Lockard born 1844 - 1849 according to census
records. He was six years old in 1850 and his estimated birth date is 1844;
however, on the 1880 Knox County, Kentucky census he is listed as 21 and born
1849.
Daniel joined Captain Dozier's 3d Regiment Kentucky Infantry August 20, 1861. From Daniel's statement, he was 17 years old at this time estimating a birth date of 1844, which corresponds with the 1850 census of Knox County, Kentucky.
The 7th Regiment was previously the 3d Regiment. A regimental history was found and submitted by Virgil Scalf:

Regiment lost during service 3 Officers and 40 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 2 Officers and 274 Enlisted men by disease. Total 319."
The author has listed below the above movements of the 7th Regiment from the above regimental history to show where Daniel was on the dates listed from his Muster Rolls.
We assume by this that Daniel was assigned to the 3d Regiment of Kentucky Infantry. Daniel eventually ended up in the 7th Regiment with his father, Thomas and brother, Noah.
Daniel joined at Camp Dick Robinson at Flat Lick Kentucky and was present on the rolls for September and October of that year. For the month of December 1861, it was not stated. However, in the remarks for December, Daniel had lost 15 cartridges. On another muster roll, it lists Daniel as present from December 31, 1861 through April 30, 1862. Daniel's Regiment moved to Mt. Vernon, Kentucky, October 1861. They had duty there until March of 1862. The regiment saw action at Camp Wild Cat, or Rockcastle Hills, October 21, 1861
From April 30, 1862 through August 31, 1862, the rolls show Daniel was absent. In the remarks section is stated, Cumberland Gap. By this, the author assumes the Regiment was camped at Cumberland Gap and the roll was taken there at this time. For the months of September and October, the card lists, "not stated." In fact, the regiment had a reconnaissance toward Cumberland Gap and skirmishes March 21-23, 1862. The Cumberland Gap Campaign went from March 28 - June 18. The regiment occupied Cumberland Gap June 18 to September 16. They evacuated Cumberland Gap and made their retreat to Greenupsburg, in the Ohio River, September 16-October 3. From the Muster Roll of November & December of 1862, we find that Daniel was sent to Camp Chase for exchange indicating that Daniel had been captured. (Muster Roll of Regt. 3, Pension File, page 9 of 19 - National Archives - Courtesy of Virgil Scalf)
"Sherman's Yazoo Expedition December 20, 1862, to January 2, 1863." (7th Regimental History)
For January and February of 1863, we find that Daniel was present for the Muster Roll, but the month of March was skipped and April was not stated. (Muster Roll of Regt. 3, Pension File, page 9 of 19 - National Archives - Courtesy of Virgil Scalf)
"Expedition to Arkansas Post, Ark., January 3-10, 1863. Assault on and capture of Fort Hindman, Arkansas Post, January 10-11. Moved to Young's Point, La., January 15-23, and duty there until March. Moved to Milliken's Bend March 8. Operations from Milliken's Bend to New Carthage March 31-April 17." (7th Regimental History)
In March and April of 1863, another Muster Roll
shows "not stated." The Regiment is listed as the 7th. For the months of May,
June, July and August of 1863, Daniel is present for the Muster Roll of Regiment
7. (Muster Roll of Regt. 7, Pension File, page 10 of 19 - National Archives -

In March and April of 1864, Daniel was still absent from the Muster Roll and was still listed as "left in convalescent camp in Carrollton, Louisiana September 5, 1863. However, in May and June of 1864, Daniel is listed as "absent" from the Muster Roll and noted as "captured by the enemy near Cornet River, Louisiana May 4, 1864. Daniel then appears on the Muster Roll for payments October 1864. He was last paid August 31, 1862 and was owed $100. He had drawn $33.87. In the "Remarks" he is listed as, "Captured by the enemy near Cornet River, Louisiana, May 4, 1864, still a prisoner of war." (Muster Roll - Pension File, page 12 of 19 - National Archives - Courtesy of Virgil Scalf)
The July and August Muster Rolls of 1864 show that Daniel was still absent and still a prisoner of war. The next muster roll is an individual muster roll, which shows that Daniel was part of Company I, 7th Regiment of Kentucky Infantry, aged 20 years. He mustered out at Louisville, Kentucky May 13, 1865. Daniel was owed $100, with $78.88 being for clothing, etc. He received two months pay ($32) at Annapolis, Maryland. Daniel was paroled about March 1, 1865 having spent 10 months as a prisoner of war. (Muster Roll - Pension File, page 13 of 19 - National Archives - Courtesy of Virgil Scalf)
"Moved to Baton Rouge, La., March 23, and duty there until October. At mouth of White River and Duvall's Bluff, Ark., October 6-November 10. At Baton Rouge until May 1, 1865; and at Clinton until March 1866. Mustered out March 11, 1866." (7th Regimental History)
The Memorandum from Prisoner of War Records states that Daniel was captured near Barboursville, Kentucky September 27, 1862 and reported at Camp Chase, Ohio December 24, 1862. (Memorandum from Prisoner of War Records, page 14 of 19 - Pension File - National Archives - Courtesy of Virgil Scalf)
Another record from the Prisoner of War Records shows that Daniel was captured again, this time at Chickamauga, Georgia, September 23, 1863 and confined at Richmond, Virginia. (Prisoner of War Records - Pension File page 16 of 19 - National Archives - Courtesy of Virgil Scalf)
The Prisoner of War Records then show that Daniel was captured at Louisiana May 3, 1864 and paroled at N. E. Ferry, North Carolina February 27-28, 1865. He was reported at C. Y. B. Maryland April 4, 1865. He was admitted to hospital Div. 1, Annapolis, Maryland April 4, 1865. No later record. (Prisoner of War Records - Pension File page 17 of 19 - National Archives - Courtesy of Virgil Scalf)
The pension file shows Daniel was released by the Assistant Surgeon at Baltimore, Maryland and ordered to report for mustering out at Camp Robinson, Kentucky on April 25, 1865. (Assistant Surgeon record - Pension File page 4 of 19 - National Archives - Courtesy of Virgil Scalf)
Another document dated April 25, 1865, relates that A. Chapel, Surgeon, from U. L. General Hospital of Baltimore, Maryland sent a letter requesting transportation for Pvt. Daniel Lockard of Co. I, 7th Kentucky to Camp Robinson, Kentucky. (Request for Transportation - Pension File page 5 of 19 - National Archives - Courtesy of Virgil Scalf)
The final document concerning Daniel's release is the receipt by the Office of Quartermaster for transportation requested by A. Chapel, Surgeon. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad provided a one-way ticket of transportation to Daniel Lockard to Camp Robinson, Kentucky where Daniel was mustered out of service on April 25, 1965.
Daniel spent three years in the army and was a prisoner of war the majority of that time. He entered at 17 and was released at 20 years old. Daniel was sick a lot and confined to the hospital during his service.
Daniel was first captured September 27, 1862 near Barboursville, Kentucky and reported at Camp Chase, Ohio December 24, 1862. His next capture was four days short of totaling one year after his first capture, on September 23, 1863 at Chickamauga, Georgia. Daniel was then captured at Carrolton, Louisiana May 3, 1864.
It appears Daniel either managed to escape from his captors, or he was exchanged the first two times, but he was not so lucky the third time. Daniel had to endure confinement from May 3, 1864 until April 1865 when the war was officially over and spent the majority of this time confined in the hospital.
Daniel had spent time in the camp hospital at Carrollton, Louisiana and again at the camp hospital in Maryland. Two years after his release from the service, Daniel married Dicey Ann Patterson-Marlow in Knox County, Kentucky. Daniel would have been 22 years old at this time. The marriage of Daniel and Dicey was short-lived. Daniel and Dicey were the parents of three sons before his death in 1874. No doubt, Daniel died from disease that had plagued him in the service. Daniel would have been 29 years old at his death.
Daniel married Dicey Ann Patterson-Marlow, December 30, 1867 in Knox County, Kentucky at the home of A. O. Crooks. This was a second marriage for Dicey. She had married Henry Marlow November 27, 1863. (Courtesy of Virgil Scalf)

By: John C. Elliott
Witness: A.O. Crook and S.B. Hopper
After Daniel Lockard died a daughter, Sarah Lockard, was born to his widow Dicey Patterson Marlow-Lockard. Sarah's father is reported to have been William "Dock" Hammons.
Dicey died when Sarah was ten or eleven years old. Sarah was born 1875 - 1877. Estimation from the 1880 census suggests 1875 but the 1900 Knox County, Kentucky census suggests 1877.
Dicey then married James Shoop in1881after the birth of her daughter Sarah. Dicey died 1885-1887 if we estimate by the age of Sarah when her mother died.
Daniel Lockard and Dicey Patterson Lockard were found on the 1870 Knox County, Kentucky census with one child, William T. Lockard. The 1880 census of Knox County shows Dicey Lockard, a widow with children; William T., Mattison, Dudley and Sarah. Sarah was not the child of Daniel and Dicey, but carried the Lockard surname throughout her life.

SARAH LOCKARD
Daughter of
Dicey
Patterson
Sarah Lockard<Dicey<William<William Patterson
Sarah Lockard, daughter of Dicey Patterson
married Johnnie Silas Scalf November 3, 1894. Johnnie was the son of Thomas
Jefferson Scalf and Martha Hammons, and grandson of Peter and Charlotte (Lotty)
Scalf. Peter was the brother of Celia (Sela) Ann Scalf. Peter and Lotty were
living four houses away from his sister, Celia (Sela) Ann Scalf Lockard in 1850.
Sarah Lockard was born to Dicey Patterson Marlow-Lockard, the widow of Daniel Lockard. Sarah's father is reported to have been William "Dock" Hammons.
The following information was submitted by Virgil Scalf, great grandson of Thomas J. Scalf and grandson of John (Johnnie) and Sarah Lockard Scalf.
"Dicey Patterson, mother of Sarah Lockard, was married to Daniel Lockard. During this marriage, three boys, William, Madison, and Dudley were born. When Daniel Lockard died in the mid 1870s, Dicey was the sole provider for the family, since the boys were very young and unable to work. During the period after Daniel died, it appears, based on the records and family history, that Dicey met William "Dock" Hammons. Dicey was several years older than Dock. As a result of the relationship between Dicey Lockard and Dock Hammons, Sarah was born.
Sarah Lockard's early life was very difficult even for the late 1800s. When she was 5-6 years old, Sarah lost the first joint on her thumb and first two fingers of her left hand due an exploding dynamite cab. Unfortunately, things did not improve as Sarah grew older; Dicey died when Sarah was 10-11 years old. After Dicey passed away, Sarah went into a deep depression, but with advice from a doctor and positive intervention by her brothers, she was able to recover. Sarah lived with the family of William "Dock" Hammons after Dicey died, but she was not happy due, in part, to a rocky relationship with Mary, the wife of Dock Hammons. After a period of time with the Hammons family, she returned to the Lockard family and was raised by her three half brothers, William, Madison, and Dudley Lockard. During the time she lived with the Hammons family, she developed a very close relationship with the daughters of Dock and Mary Hammons. After she and the daughters of Dock Hammons were grown, this close relationship continued, and Sarah always spoke fondly of her half sisters, Maude, Nannie, Mammie, and Elizabeth. (Courtesy of Ruby Scalf, daughter-in-law of Sarah Lockard)
Even though William "Dock" Hammons was Sarah's father, she used the surname "Lockard" as she grew into a young woman. The use of the surname Lockard was probably due to the time spent with the three half brothers during her childhood and the unfortunate experience spent with the Hammons family.
Johnny Scalf met Sarah Lockard at the Fairgrounds near Artemus, KY. This is a small settlement 4-5 miles from Barbourville, KY. Sarah explained to Johnny that she performed housework for several families for a living. Well, Johnny told her that his mother was not well and needed some help. So, Sarah went home with Johnny and started to work for Thomas and Martha Scalf. Well, during the next few months, Johnny and Sarah fell in love and were married in Knox County, KY on November 3, 1894." (Courtesy of Ruby Scalf, daughter in law of Sarah Lockard)
Sarah Lockard Scalf died on November 16, 1952. The death certificate lists her father as Jess Hammons. Since William Hammons was Sarah's father, the reason for the entry of "Jess" is unknown unless it was a nickname. (Death Certificate Courtesy of Virgil Scalf)
Sarah Lockard Scalf is listed in the 1900 census of Knox County, Kentucky with her husband, Johnnie Scalf, and two of their children, living at Flat Lick, Kentucky. (See chapter of Peter Scalf for descendents of John Silas Scalf and Sarah Lockard Scalf).

She married Franklin Marion Tolson, born November 28, 1854, in Breathitt County, Kentucky. Franklin was the son of Thomas Tolson and Rebecca Caudill. Frank and Sarah were married on October 10, 1875 in Wolfe County, Kentucky. They had two sons. Lexington Tolson was born June 28, 1877 in Wolfe County, Kentucky and a son that died at birth was born September 17, 1878 in Wolfe County, Kentucky. In the Harold Green Gazette, an article stated that Sarah Tolson, age nineteen, died two days after giving birth on September 19, 1878. In the Wolfe County death records, she is listed as Sarah Tolson, age 19, died September 19, 1878, fever, born Knox County, daughter of Thomas Lockard. THOMAS LOCKARD
&
ALZYA MIRIAH (NORTHERN) STEWART
When Thomas was discharged in 1863, he returned
to his family in Knox County, Kentucky. Four years later, Thomas married his
second wife, Alzya Mariah (Northern) Stewart, widow of John Stewart on 6
September 1867 at the home of Thomas Lockhard in Knox County, Kentucky, by Isham
Hubbard, Jr. J. P.
Thomas' son, Daniel Lockhart, Wallis Jones, and others were recorded as witnesses. (Marriage Record of Thomas and Alzey Mariah Stewart - and Pension file of Thomas Lockard - National Archives - Courtesy of Virgil Scalf)

By 1870, Thomas and Alzya were found in Knox County, Kentucky. Ordeny (Ordena) daughter of Thomas and Sela Scalf Lockard was in the home.
Ordeny (census spelling) was born about 1856. Interestingly, Ordeny/Ordena/Ardania had married James Myers in July of 1870 but was either living or visiting with her father and stepmother in August of 1870.
Ardana is the spelling listed on her marriage record from Knox County, Kentucky. She was seventeen years old and James was sixteen. This is the only information we have for James Myers and Ordena/Ardenia Lockard Myers.

On March 16, 1884, Thomas Lockard filed for his military pension on disabilities incurred from his service in the late War. One deposition states he fell from his horse breaking his collarbone and also had hip and back injuries. However, this later proved to have been confused with his son Daniel's application.
Thomas filed for a pension for chronic diarrhea and rheumatism causing heart disease.
(Link to date of first filing - File 3)
Thomas was awarded his pension. He received an increase to $12.00 per month September 23, 1891 for rheumatism, disease of the heart, and senility. (Pension papers of Thomas Lockard - National Archives - Courtesy of Virgil Scalf)
Thomas only lived three years after his pay increase and his widow, Alzya Mariah (Northern) Stewart then filed for benefits.
The correct spelling of Alzya/Alzey Mariah Stewart is unknown to the author. In some records she is listed as Alzey while on others she is listed as Alzya. However, her named is spelled Alzey on the marriage record.
Thomas and Alzya were the parents of at least seven known children. There might have been more, but if so, it is unknown to us at this time.
Children of Thomas Lockard and Alzya Mariah (Northern) Stewart:
On March 1, 1894, Alzya Mariah Lockard filed for a widow's pension. Alzya stated in her declaration that she had been previously married to John Stewart who had died on 13 June 1866 and that Thomas had been married previously to Sela Ann Scalf who died May 23, 1859.
Alzya listed the names of the legitimate children of Thomas and Alzya less than 16 years of age, at the time of his death:
LINK TO DOCUMENT - Part 1, Part 2 & Part 3
Whether Alzya received a widow's pension is unknown, however, Alzya died just two years later on January 12, 1896. Her son Joseph then applied for the pension for the minor children. Joseph had been granted guardianship of his siblings, George and Margaret. The statement of Nathan B. Jones states the death date of Alzya Stewart Lockard as mentioned above. (Affidavit of Nathan B. Jones -Pension File of Thomas Lockard - National Archives - Courtesy of Virgil Scalf)
LINK TO DOCUMENT - Part 1 and Part 2
In the same document, the spelling of Thomas' surname was apparently questioned. Joseph answered in response:
"That his father always spelled his name thus = LOCKARD = that the marriage record was a clerical error of the clerk who wrote them. That the signature of the claimant and letters of Guardianship was an error of the agent who drew the application of claimant who at the time thought it was right. That said Thomas Lockard could not read or write but always directed when asked about it that his name was spelled as stated above - but officers writing his name often spell it differently without asking how to spell it and so the spelling has become mixed." (Affidavit of Joseph Lockard - Pension file of Thomas Lockard - National Archives - Courtesy of Virgil Scalf)
LINK TO DOCUMENT - Part 1 and Part 2
From the information above, we can only speculate that Joseph might have been talking about the spelling of LOCKARD versus LOCKHARD. We have no marriage record of Thomas and Alzya at this time.
Information on the children of Thomas Lockard and Alzya Maria (Northern) Stewart is taken from a review of the pension file of Thomas Lockard, census records, and a very thorough search of this family by Virgil Scalf who is also a Scalf/Lockard descendent.
On February 14, 1894, Thomas Lockard died from heart disease. (Kentucky Register and Pension File of Thomas Lockard - Courtesy of Virgil Scalf)
By the enumeration of the 1900 census, Alzya had also died leaving at least two minor children. (See statement of Joseph Lockard)
FRANCES "FRANKY" LOCKARD
Daughter of
Thomas
Lockard and Alzya Mariah Northern
Frances, also known as Franky Lockard, was born
(according to census records) about 1867-68 in Kentucky.
At this time, we believe that Franky (Frances) was named Frances Rebecca or Rebecca Frances Lockard. The following marriage record and census record appears to be Franky Lockard, daughter of Thomas and Alzya Lockard.
James T. Brown applied for a marriage license on December 3, 1883 to marry Rebecca Lockard, daughter of Thomas Lockard. The couple was married December 4, 1883 in Knox County, Kentucky. James was 25 years old and this was a second marriage for James. James was born in Clay County, Kentucky; his father was born in NC and his mother was born in KY.
If this was Franky, her name is listed as Rebecca with what appears to be an (L) for a middle initial on the marriage record; however, this might have represented her maiden name. It is also possible that Franky had more than one middle name. We know that Franky was a short name for Frances. We have not found another child named Rebecca at this time; however, this does not mean one did not exist.
In comparison to the L in Lockhart made by the clerk, the two letters appear the same. However, Rebecca's father is listed as Thomas Lockhart suggesting this is the child we know as Frances (Franky) Lockard from the census records.
If this is Franky Lockard, she was 16 years old in 1883 with an estimated birth date of 1867. She was born in Knox County, Kentucky. Her father was born in Clay County, Kentucky and her mother was born in Hancock County, Tennessee. This information also supports the theory that this was Frances "Franky" Lockard.

JOHN
THOMAS LOCKARD
Son of
Thomas
Lockard & Alzya Mariah Northern
John Thomas Lockard, son of Thomas Lockard and
Alzya Mariah Northern, was born about 1874 according to the 1880 Knox County,
Kentucky census. His death certificate states his birth date as what appears to
be 1860 with 1870 written over it. The 1860 might have been 1880 instead. The
writing is difficult to determine. However, calculating from John's age at his
death and the date of death, his birth year would have been 1880. This varies
six years from the census records.
Apparently John did not marry for he was listed as "single" on his death certificate. The cause of death was "drowned by falling in to Little Richard Creek" January 14, 1914 at the age of 34 years and 6 days old. J. F. Dozier was the coroner and informant for the record. Joseph Lockard was the undertaker. John is interred at Jones Cemetery at Four Mile, Kentucky. (Death Certificate of John Thomas Lockard - Courtesy of Virgil Scalf)

was 23 years old and Clara was 21. This was a second marriage for George and the
first marriage for Clara. She was the daughter of Scott and Elizabeth Jackson
and a sister to Sally Jackson that married George's brother, Joseph. Clara was
born in North Carolina according to the marriage record. George and Clara were

Susan married Henry Jackson, son of Scott and Elizabeth Jackson, of Claiborne County, Tennessee. Henry was likely a brother to Sally and Clara Jackson that married Susan's brothers Joseph and George Lockard. Susan's parents are listed as Thomas and Mariah Lockard of Knox County, Kentucky. This was a first marriage for both. Susan was 20 years old and Henry was 22. They applied for the license on December 5, 1900 and were married December 6, 1900 at Sinking Valley in Knox County, Kentucky.

DANIEL LOCKARD
OF
LEE COUNTY, VIRGINIA
At this time, we cannot confirm the parents of Thomas Lockard. Therefore, limited research was undertaken to try and determine possibilities for the parents of Thomas. The conclusion of that research is present here and may or may not be a part of the Thomas Lockard family.
First, in the Lee County, Virginia census of 1830 is listed a Daniel Lockard as head of house. This family lines up as follows:
1830 Lee Co. VA
LOCKHART, Daniel
1 male | 10 - 15 | (1815 - 1820) (Probably son)
1 male | 15 - 20 | (1810 - 1815) (Probably son)
1 male | 40 - 50 | (1780 - 1790) (Probably Daniel)
2 female | 5 - 10 | (1820 - 1825) (Probably daughters)
1 female | 10 - 15 | (1815 - 1820) (Probably daughter)
1 female | 15 - 20 | (1810 - 1815) (Probably daughter) |
Note there does not appear to be a female in the household near the age of Daniel Lockard, suggesting that his wife had either died, or they were separated, or possibly divorced.
It should be noted here that in this same year a Thomas Lockard appears as head of house on the 1830 Clay County, Kentucky census and an older female is living in the home. This may or may not have been his mother.
In comparing the 1830 census of Clay County, Kentucky to that of the 1840 census of Hawkins County, Tennessee, where a Thomas Lockard was found as head of house, we find that the age of Thomas Lockard in 1830 is slightly older than Thomas Lockard in 1840.
1830 Clay CO, KY
LOCKARD, Thomas
2 males | < 5 | (1825 - 1830) |
2 males | 5 - 10 | (1820 - 1825) |
1 male | 10 - 15 | (1815 - 1820) |
1 male | 30 - 40 | (1790 - 1800) (Thomas?) |
2 females | 10 - 15 | (1815 - 1820) |
1 female | 50 - 60 | (1770 - 1780) (Mother of Thomas?) |
1840 Hawkins CO TN
LOCKHART, Thomas
1 male | <5 | (1835 - 1840) (James M. Lockard)
1 male | 20 - 30 | (1810 - 1820) (Thomas Lockard)
1 female | 5 - 10 | (1830 - 1835) (Unknown)
1 female | 10 - 15 | (1825 - 1830) (Unknown)
1 female | 15 - 20 | (1820 - 1825) (Celia Ann Scalf Lockard)
1 female | 40 - 50 | (1790 - 1800) (Sister or sister-in-law of Thomas) |
The 1840 census does not match the 1830 census and the older female in the home in 1830 was born about 1770-1780 suggesting this might have been the mother of Thomas; however, the older female in 1840 was born about 1790-1800 suggesting this might have been someone else in the home of Thomas Lockard in 1840.
The younger females might have been children of the older female in the home. It is possible that the youngest female was a daughter of Thomas and Cealy Ann; however, from all records obtained, James Madison Lockard appears to be the oldest child born about 1837-38.
This family may or may not be the same Thomas Lockard family. There was no Thomas Lockard on the 1840 Clay County, Kentucky census, nor was he found as head of house anywhere other than Hawkins County, Tennessee in 1840.
John Scalf, Sr., first applied for his pension in Hawkins County, Tennessee in 1838 suggesting he had moved there sometime before the application was filed. His son-in-law, Thomas Lockard, signed a statement on behalf of John's pension and was in Hawkins County at least two years before the enumeration of the 1840 census.
The Scalf family traveled frequently between Clay County, Kentucky and Hawkins/Hancock, and Claiborne Counties in Tennessee, which also border Lee County, Virginia where known family members lived at one time or another.
Daniel Lockard appears on the 1840 Lee County, Virginia census. Andrew Lockheart (30-40) was living nearby.
1840 Lee CO VA
LOCKHEART, DANIEL
1 male | 50 - 60 | (1780 - 1790) |
1 female | < 5 | (1835 - 1824) |
1 female | 5 - 10 | (1830 - 1835) |
1 female | 20 - 30 | (1810 - 1820) |
Lee County, Virginia, joins Hancock Co. TN. In 1840, Lee County, Virginia joined the part of Hawkins County, Tennessee that became Hancock County in 1848. The family of Cealy Ann Scalf and the family of Daniel Lockard could have been neighbors during the years of 1838-1846. Lee County, Virginia also joins Scott and Russell Counties.
The known travels of the Scalf family, along with the known areas of Lee County, Virginia and Clay County, Kentucky strongly suggest to the author that it is very possible that Daniel Lockard of Lee County, Virginia could have been Thomas' father or at least a close relative. Thomas also named a son Daniel.
Recalling that on the 1840 census of Hawkins County, Tennessee, in the home of Thomas Lockard there were four females. One female is most likely Cealy Ann. She is listed as 15 - 20, but there are two other females born 1825 - 1835. There is also a female born 1790 - 1800. We can only speculate that this might have been a relative of Thomas; however, it could have been a relative of Cealy Ann. The younger females could have been daughters of the older female.
The male born 1835 - 1840 from the 1840 census was most likely the first child of Thomas and Cealy Ann (James Madison Lockard) born about 1837. The only other Thomas Lockard/Lockhart found by the author was living in Lewis Co. Virginia in 1830. This Thomas Lockard/Lockhart was married and both he and his wife were aged, 20-30, born 1800-1810 and continued to live in Lewis County, Virginia through 1860.
In 1850, Daniel Lockard/Lockhart from the 1830 and 1840 Lee County, Virginia census is still living in Lee County, Virginia. It appears there is no wife in the home at this time. Although Charity could have been his wife, the relationship is not listed on this census.
The author believes, however, that Charity was a daughter and the younger children were grandchildren of Daniel. Further records could prove this incorrect. The author has listed this family from the census for research purposes in the event that Daniel might have been the father of Thomas.

Daniel Lockard/Lockhart was still living at the age of 75 in 1860 Lee
County, Virginia. Again, the census does not list the relationship of the folks
in the home of Daniel Lockard. This census does, however, reveal the place of
birth of Daniel Lockard/Lockhart, which was listed as Tazewell, Virginia.
The folks in the home of Daniel were all born in Lee County. It is assumed again that these were grandchildren of Daniel although they very well could have been children. Charity is not listed on this census and assumed to have died or possibly married if she was a daughter of Daniel. She might also have been a daughter-in-law. Andrew Lockard/Lockhart is still living near Daniel in 1860 Lee County, Virginia.

The family of Daniel Lockard/Lockhart was not found in 1870.
Daniel Lockard/Lockhart may or may not have been part of the family of Thomas Lockard. However, the author believes there is a very good possibility that there is a family connection between these families. The author would be interested in hearing from descendents of the Lockard/Lockhart families concerning these families.
NOTE: This chapter ends the writings of the sixteen children of John Scalf, Sr. and Edeah (Edy) Carlisle Scalf. John and Edy had fourteen living children with descendents. Celia Ann Scalf Lockard was the last known child of John and Edy.
One son named William did not live to adulthood. A second son was also named William in honor of his brother that had died. No marriage has been found for him at this time although a marriage before his death was possible.
