Rosakay@msn.com has expired. She has been delieted. But! Allisonkm@msn.com will take her e-mails for her. Really this was all through a technical difficulty that I had to change my e-mail address. So my new address is Allisonkm@msn.com. Thanks.
Bob and Jim, Don't ever let anyone tell you, you don't have a sense of humor. I love it. I just wish I could copy it for real. I am going to copy the "poem" by hand I'm known for handing things like that out at work. Keep looking you may find them for real. Kay
I just want to thank you for this site. You did a remarkable job by collecting the various database. This is a wonderful site. My second cousin R Gene printed the "Scalf Family History" book and I am trying to find him. I'm sure with this site I will be able to.
Sincerely, -Kevin B. Scalf, Great-grandson of Issac, grandson of Esker, son of Leo--Kentucky
Kevin B. Scalf -- you can find the email address of Gene Scalf where it talks about ordering the Scalf Family History book. Gene is in the process of moving his business from California to Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Coat of Arms -- There have been a couple circulated but no valid ones to my knowledge. Those that were circulated were mainly from Edwin O. Scalf in Calif. who spent years trying to tie us to the Scalfi/ Scalfo/Scalfarato names in Italy -- with no success! It was their coats of arms he was mailing around.

This is my first time visiting your website and I find it very interesting and informative. My mother was Flora Scalf, daughter of John R. Scalf and granddaughter of Greenberry Scalf. Hello my name is Samuel J. Scalf not the one who died at age 32. I am 47 years old and very interested in my family heritage. As I scanned this website I did not see any mention of a Greenberry Scalf. I believe he was supposed to be my g-g grandfather. My grandfather's name was Columbus Andrew Scalf. Do you have any information regarding these Scalf's? They lived in the Knoxville, TN area. Thank you for your service...sscalf@netzero.net
You have done an excellent job. I have enjoyed visiting each site and learning more of my Scalf/James connection. The only comments otherwise noted was the last name of Paul Herman James (posted Jones) and Edney Maude James (posted as Jones) and on Paul James & Rachel Dovey James (posted as Paul James Scalf & Rachel Dovey). I am not being critical as I know you have put so much work into this. You are really appreciated. Bea James King
Hi,
I think you've done well in creating this site. I've looked over the majority of it, and I've located "many a" MARTHA SCALF.
I believe the one I'm searching for must be unrelated. Even so, if anyone ever comes across my GreatGrandmother, feel free to e-mail me, and let me know!
All I know about her is.... MARTHA SCALF d. ? d. ? m._____ Payne *children* Charles C. Payne m. Ruth Kathleen Juanita Holloway b. 1919 IL / d.1974 CO Myrtle Payne b. ?/ d.? Woodrow Payne b. ?/ d.?
My grandmother has said Charles Claude Payne was from IL. At some point, he had to have come to Alabama to marry my grandmother. She also said she believed her Mother-In-Law, MARTHA SCALF, had relatives in Evansville.
Thanks to anyone that takes time to read this.

Would appreciate your help in this. Thanks, Barbara Ellen Scalf
What a wonderful site. you have done a fantastic job and I plan to return here time and time again. I am looking for information on a James SCALF bn 1840-1843 who married a Susannah COZIAHR/COZIAR in McDonough County, IL and then they moved to Oberlin area in Kansas 1885-1910 time frame. I have a picture of them with their daughter, Elizabeth, who married James HATCH and their two daughters, P___ra ? and May. I would love to share the photo with your site. How do I do that? I would greatly appreciate any information any one has on my James SCALF. Thanks again for all the info your site offers. Rhoby Wayne Rasch <phbor@fiai.net>
Hello,
My name is Sandra Keyes Kennedy and I am doing the family research for our Keyes ancestors. I have accumulated much information and have run across information that has directed me to research the Scalf connection.
Joseph T. Keyes is the son of our gg grandparents, William and Janes Keyes. He is the one we tracked down in Collin County, TX who married Laura A. Scalf on Feb. 18th or 19th of 1871. She was the daughter of Isaac Scalf and Sarah J. Smith Scalf. We know from the information I have located using the LDS Church Research Center in my town that on the 1880 Collin County, TX census that his wife was a widow by then, leaving her with three small children and staying in the household of her parents, Isaac and Sarah J. Scalf:
Children listed: William Keyes, 6, b. 1874? TX Joseph Keyes, 4, b. 1876? TX Pearl Keyes, 1 mo., b. 1880, TX
I have even made contact with a Jerry Hatfield, a descendant of Joseph T. and Laura A., through their son, William Isaac Keyes.
What we do not yet know and are searching for, is how our Joseph T. Keyes died (accident or illness) and the exact date of his death, so that we may get a death cert. or information about his untimely death. It appears he died sometime right before that June 8th, 1880 Census and definitely not until after Sept. 1879, when Pearl Keyes would have been conceived.
We would also love to know what happened to Joseph and Laura's other two children and their descendants if anyone knows. We would be more than glad to share what we have of their ancestry on the Keyes side.
Please let me know if you are able to help and if there are questions regarding information that I might be able to help with.
Sincerely, Sandra Keyes Kennedy sankenn_99@yahoo.com
This is Rusty Scalf again. I just used this email frame 5 minutes ago. I am back now to say that I found my grandfather's marriage record in your list of marriage records.

Excellent site. I am VERY interested in getting a copy of Henry's and Elmer's books. My father purchased a copy of Henry's years ago, but I don't know if that's still around. Do you know where I might get a copy? My own site is www.scalf-family.com
Admittedly, I am only compiling records from other sources for now. The main goal of my site is to contact as many living Scalf's as I can (I'll be sending out hundreds of postcards fairly soon) to try to get all of us linked back to the work that's already done.
I'm in the Army, and if I get stationed in Europe again, I'll try to get to England and do some searching there.
Thanks again for your site. I just turned 40 this year (maybe that has something to do with it), and find myself very caught up with family-history-fever. Coming across your site will save me from duplicating years of work. I plan to hit lots of archives all around the country and eventually link .jpg copies of all documents to individuals.
For the next year, I'm at scalfs@kornet.net
Thanks and God bless you for such a great work! Stephen Scalf
I have a question about Mark M./Mark Monroe Scalf
I have Mark M., son of Berryman, b. 1838 (confirmed in Census) I have Mark Monroe, son of William Scalf and Amanda Crumley, b. 1878. I have another Mark Monroe, b. 1879, son of Doctor Samuel Scalf (confirmed in Census)
Henry P. states the 1878 Mark Scalf married Martha, daughter of Greenberry (Berry B.?), and his sister Vonnie married Martha's brother, William.
I'm getting tied up on Martha's kids, Helen, Harvey, Evy, and William. Some people have them listed as Scalf, others as Teeters.
Can anyone provide some insights? Thanks

I have a question about Mark M./Mark Monroe Scalf
I have Mark M., b. 1838, son of Berryman (confirmed by a Census)
I have Mark Monroe, b. 1878, son of William Scalf and Amanda Crumley.
I also have a Mark Monroe, b. 1879, son of Doctor Samuel Scalf. (also confirmed in a Census)
Henry P. says the 1878 Mark married his cousin Martha, daughter of Greenberry (I show daughter of Berry B.), and Mark's sister Vonnie (Lavonne) married Martha's brother, William. Is this confirmed anywhere?
I've seen genealogies showing Martha married to a Teeters, with four kids: Helen, Harvey, Evy, and William.
Does anyone have any clarification on this?
Thanks,
Stephen Scalf

The information in your files are great. My name is Frank Trent. I was borne in Harlan County Kentucky, and now live out near Seattle Washington. A small town called Richland WA. My Great Grand Father was Isaiah Trent, married to Mary Scalf. I found the information some time ago. but I had no proof. I have it now through your records. Barbara Marsh put me onto your site, Thanks Frank Trent.
I am trying to find where Mary Scalf is located in your files that shows her marriage to Alexander Trent. He is my Great Great Grand father. Thanks for all the work you have put into this piece of work. It's Great. Frank Trent. Fptrent@aol.com
To Frank Trent: Frank, I don't believe there is a reference to the marriage of Alexander and Mary "Polly" Scalf in any of the works that are posted here other than the statement that they were married. If you are speaking of a marriage record, I know of none. However, in the third segment that is coming up on John Scalf Sr., I believe you will find sufficient confirmation of this marriage and although there has been no marriage record found, there is enough documentation to support this. I have just finished scanning the documents that go with this segment and hopefully, it will be up within the next week or so. Thanks for you comments and do check back often. There is much more on the line of John Sr. coming up!! Margaret
Hello there. My name is Chris Scalf. I am from Kingsport, Tennessee. My father is James Donald Scalf. He was born in Kingsport in 1945 to Claude Homer Scalf and Gladys Dykes Scalf. Claude was the son of John Scalf and Lula Mae Hickman Scalf. I am not able to connect our line to the rest of the Scalf line. There is a referance to Lula Mae on this site from Depews Chapel Cemetary. How do i find out whose child John scalf was? Please help. Thanks, Chris Scalf cjscalf@yahoo.com
FYI I found information in a book titled "Histotic Sullivan" by Oliver Taylor (c) 1909. Page 22 states,"On a farm near emmett station on the Virginia and southwestern railroad, two workmen, Ben Webb and ed scalf, who were clearing a tract of new ground around 1893, dug up a copper kettle in whick a sapling about three inches in diameter was growing.....Afterwards some one discovered the inscription 'D. Boone 1760' carved under the rim." Chris Scalf
You have a great site here. There is 1 article that is incorrect. It is chapter 5.It states that Greenberry was a brother to Daniel Jackson Sr. Greenberry was his son. Daniel Sr was my GGGgrandfather. You also have a marriage of Francis Scalf to Malinda Jackson in Knox Co. but no date Daniel Sr. also had a daughter named Malinda .She was born in 1837.Please email me if you have any questions Randy Jackson

Hello, my name is Clyde Cordell Scalf and I have had such a wonderful time viewing this site. My grand father was John Henry Scalf, b.1884. Of the five children he and Mabel Thorsen had, Kenneth Cordell Scalf is my father. My father was married prior to his marriage to my mother Helen Baliniski in 1949. I believe her name was Mary. Of this marriage there was a son born by the name of Martis (Marty) Scalf. Marty came to live with us in 1960 in Otis Orchards WA. He was my half brother and I have not heard or seen him in 42 years. He was a large part of my life and I miss him very much. I've searched the past years to find him, but to no avail. If anyone knows of him or his whereabouts would you please leave a message for me or give him my address.
When I was a young boy my father gave me a picture of his mother Mabel taken when she was a young woman. If anyone from the Thorsen or Scalf's would be interested please e-mail.
Thank you for having such a wonderful and informative site. May God bless.

My mother, Flora Scalf Davis (daughter of John R. Scalf) passed away on May 26, 2001. She was 89 years young. She was the last one of John R. and Mary Eunice Scalf's children to leave this earth. I still enjoy the information posted here regarding the Scalf heritage. Dorothy Stevens
Hello, My mother told me about this site. It's a great SCALF resource and I thank you for all the hard work. My great-great grandparents were Noah and Abbigail Scalf (?nee Scalf). We are searching for additional information on Abbigail this family. Noah was the son of William M. and Joicy Jackson Scalf. This family was on the 1910 Knox County Census House #178/181 with the following children; Julia (my great-grandmother who married Dewey Parker), Loyd, Sol (Rev Solomon Scalf), Charles, Willie, and Possie. We think they also had 2 more daughters, Nannie and Lelia. Any help would be appreciated. Our e-mail addressees are: cen58265@centurytel.net and paula.keyes@gte.net
Hi Tracy, I tried to email Elmer's address to you but your email address came back as invalid. Please email me and I will give you Elmer's address. I was in Eidson just a few weeks ago. Didn't know you lived there or I would have said hello!

Dorothy Stevens --- I would like to extend my sympathies concerning the loss of your mother. A mother is a precious thing to lose. Thank you for letting us know and we're glad you are enjoying the website. Come back often! Margaret

Kevin - I sent you an email concerning the Scalf/Bledsoe connections. Unfortunately, I don't know who Callie's mother was. My information came from Ranson Scalf concerning Vanis and he did not mention the name. However, I will be glad to pass it along to you if I do find out. Margaret
Margaret I did not receive your e mail send it to kevinyose@hotmail.com
Kevin, having server problems on this end. Will keep trying to send. Hopefully, you will get it soon.
Kevin, email keeps coming back. Don't know if it's hotmail or my server. My niece has trouble with her hotmail address as well, so it could be either. This is what I have been able to find thus far. Vannis' father was Ransome Scalf and mother was Nellie Bledsoe. Vannis, (son of Ransome) married Callie/Kathy? (could not understand Ransome very well when we talked). In my notes I have that Vannis' wife was related to Nellie, however, Ransome did not state the parents of Nellie or Vannis' wife. You might contact Larry Bledsoe at Route 3, Box 543 Big Stone Gap, VA 24219. He is another Bledsoe/Scalf cousin and researching both lines. They are both certainly descendants of either Abraham or Isaac Bledsoe (the longhunters) who were the earliest Bledsoe settlers in that area. Hope this helps! I'm receiving your emails but got all I sent to you back except one. Have not finished going through all my correspondence from Larry but if anything turns up I will get back to you. Margaret
Margaret my dads mom was Edith Scalf-Yose her parents were Vanis and Callie Bledsoe Scalf. Callies father was Issac Bledsoe
Kevin, thank you for clarifying the Yost/Yose name. Ransome was not very clear on that and thanks for clearing up Callie/Kathy. It sounded like Ransome had said Kathy instead of Callie. Margaret
Im looking for information on a Milinda Scalf. The only info I have is she may have been native Indian and gave birth out of wedlock a son to Richard Henry Holland. It is said that she gave Richard the baby when he left Kentucky to move to Arkansas. The child was born Nov-26-1869 in Clay Co,Kentucky. I was wondering if you mighht have any info or leads I can look into to find and add to my Family History. Thank you Cliff Holland
Cliff, do you have any known dates or even suspected/estimated dates for Malinda or Richard? I had this same inquiry about a year ago and could not come up with any likely Malinda Scalf that would fit the information the researcher had. She had very little information on them. Several of the KY families (among others) have marital connections to Native Americans. The Scalf/Payne/Phillips family is one. If you know anything at all about this Malinda, it would help to figure out which one she may have possibly been. You can email if you would like at virgo@chartertn.net and maybe we can go down the line and at least eliminate the ones it could not have been and give you more direction on where to go. My computer has been down for quite sometime and I just got it back up and running again. I don't have all of my information back on yet, but I will look through the past information and see if I can locate anything on this. Maybe another researcher out there will stop by and respond to your post as well! Margaret

Regarding the posting regarding Callie Bledsoe. I believe the information you give that shows her as 7 years old in 1920 cannot be correct as my dad was born in 1925 and he was her third child. I show her as being born in 1902.

To the daughter of H.P. Scalf who did not identify herself or leave an email address. I believe you visited this site shortly after it began, approximately 21 months ago. For 18 months, I posted a note prominently on the home page, listing you by name and requesting that you contact me. Without a mail or email address, and with Albert's permission I would state the following:
We have no interest in re-printing the material. It is posted on this website only as a guide for researchers and is in no way for re-sale. No mention was made of reprint rights in discussions with Albert. In fact, he said the copyright would expire in a year or so, and he thought a printer was going to republish the book. When I contacted the printer he said his interest was only in "Kentucky's Last Frontier". He also said no reprinting by the college was expected. Albert said that all of Henry's papers were boxed up and delivered to the college for display in a special area paid for by the family. I stated that my interest was only in making a copy of the book available to researchers as most did not even have one available in their local libraries. For example, the very large McClung Collection at Lawson McGhee Library in Knoxville does not have a copy. I assured him that the work would be treated with respect, reproduced as accurately as possible, and that all credits and copyrights would be posted. He said he would let the other family members know of his action. Feel free to contact me at any time.

possible connection: I am Paula Key {or Keye} daughter of Paul williamson {Junior} Williamson and Mary Ann Aldridge. Paul put me up for adoption in Kennett, Mo. when I was about 4. Mary seems to have vanished- I haven't been able to locate her and been searching long time. I am of obvious Indian heritage, and since Paul's death it seems I am even more lost than before. Margaret , have been trying to reach you, postmaster says you mail is on hold, please contact me. Kay Allisonkm@msn.com
I just arrived at this site yesterday and am still reading through the lists of names (i'm no geneologist). I wish to thank Kay (allisonkm@msn.com) for directing me to this site. Kay started researching the family not long ago and was using some information I had collected. She quickly ran into a problem - some of the information I had, had been appended by persons unknown for reasons unkown that indicated our family branched from 4 brothers who immigrated from Wales in the mid-1800's. As it was a common practice for cousins (usually 2nd or more distant) to marry due to the isolated conditions in upper east TN at that time and the fact that there are, apparently, more than one Scalf family in this area I am now thoroughly confused as to my origins. Hopefully this site will bring some light into my dim and distant path.
Whether it proves out that my family line actually joins the primary line at some point I am extemely proud to claim the name SCALF. You all have my sincerest support and I will assist in any way I can.
P.S. The basic information I started with was extracted from family bibles (only) and Kay has been tracking backward from it. It traces from me to Thomas Henry Scalf (Sr.) to Elbert Sevier Scalf to Alexander Nathan Scalf to Nathan Scalf. It is at this point that the appended information shows up. According to family bible records Nathan was born in Cardiff Wales in Nov 1838 and immigrated with 3 brothers Barry, Bill, and Jesse. As there are 2 or 3 SCALF families in this area that appear to be unrelated I have been "stonewalled". If anyone can add to the above information with any verifiable information please feel free to contact me at DASCALF@CHARTER.NET.
Again i want to thank Kay for her work on behalf of the family.
This is Dean Scalf again.
For those interested in a family Coat of Arms - I have a description of a coat of arms but it's based on information that may be erroneous. If any readers or visitors are into heraldry they may be able to track it down and possibly give a more valid description.
If you are interested contact me at dascalf@charter.net.

I have some info that may clear up why some of the Scalf family tree is so confusing. I have been doing research on John Samuel Scalf, Mar. 25, 1888-Nov. 21, 1963. Full name:John Samuel Micheal July Harrison Jerimiah Scalf. John was born in the Watauga area of Washington Co., Tenn. (Turkey Town community). He was born as a Slagle and for reasons unknown went to live with a Scalf family at a very young age. Both families lived in the same area. John took on the name Scalf but I do not believe this was a legal adoption. He married Amanda Louise Thomas,(nicknames Lula or Red),12-15-1900, 2-21-1947, from Bristol, Tenn. John and Lula had 11 children, two of which are still living. Frank, John, Mildred and Betty Joe all died at very young ages. Mildred and Frank were still born. Betty joe died right after birth, Sept. 9, 1931 and John died at the age of 9. All are buried in the Turkey Town cemetery (Scalf Family cemetery). The names of the remaining children are as follows (some buried there as well). Bobby Eugene Scalf, Carl Andrew Scalf, James Riley Scalf, Florence Nightingale Scalf,Cook, Peggy Jean Scalf,Greer, Helen Marie Scalf,Goforth,, Gladys Irene Scalf,Elkins. The only siblings I have are believed to be Scalf children, not Slagles, although they could be other children raised by Scalfs. Pete and Jim Scalf both were baptist preacher and preached from horse back through the community. Lizzy Scalf,McDonald, Martha Scalf,Lowdy, Molly Scalf,Nidifer. The only info I have on his parents is his mothers name, Mary Emmitt. It is not known if this was the Scalf mother who raised him or the Slagle mother who gave birth to him. John was a bootlegger and spent time in prison for this. Does anyone have any info on him? Either his Scalf family or his Slagle family? Thanks, Cindy wishbone1959@earthlink.net

I have a document supplied by a relative in Baltimore MD, which lists our family tree back to 1540. On this document is recorded the detail... "William Scarfe, 1700, migrated to Lonan, Isle of Man"
I have a substantial database on the Scarf/Scarfe/Scarff/Scariff family.
There is a branch of the Scarfe family, of the IOM, resident in Western Australia.

Hi! I am posting here to try and get a hold of someone who may be able to shed some light on the daughter of Lewis Scalf, Sarah who possibly was md to a Capps, she was tried in Surry NC in 1812 for killing her infant son. Elmer Scalf had said in his book that a James Caps was living near Benjamin Scalf in 1810 Iredell census but it turns out that was James Cass not Caps and his ancestry seems to be est as well as his descendency. What Elmer did not find was another James Cap living in 1810 Surry Co NC census although the name appears to look like Cap it could be Cass also, the letters are hard to understand with the way they made an "s" look like an "f" when a double "s" was included in the spelling. I have Caps orphans who won a land lottery in Habersham Ga in 1827, they were John, Stephen b 1811 NC, Bennett b 1814 NC or GA, Leonard b 1816 TN?and Sarah Caps b 1822 in GA. There could have been other children but not listed as they did not qualify for the lottery due to their age, a Priscilla Capps md William Hicks in Habersham Ga in 1824. Nancy Capps b 1805 NC md James Lecroy in Henry Ga 1829.James family was from Habersham Ga, James and Nancy Lecroy appear in the 1840 Bledsoe TN census next to Leonard Capps and several houses from Stephen Capps who md Rose Anna Johnson, Sarah Capps may have md Rose Anna Johnsons brother John Johnson and they are found on this pg in 1840 census too. Another possible brother may have been Moses Capps who is found with Bennett Capps in 1850 Cumberland Kentucky census. I think these children or at least some of them may be the children in Lewis Scalf's home in the 1830 census. There is a RObert B Caps listed 1830 Habersham Ga census but he does not seem to fit completely, possible he could be related but unknown at this time. Anyone with any insight or suggestions may contact me at ms_painter@hotmail.com Thanks, Nancy

Hi, I've been interested in Scalf family all my life and am so thankful for this site. I recently have the opporunity to join as a charter member to DAR bust must do it soon. I've gone as far as Benjamin Scalf SR. 1765-1870. Bob says further research is being done. Who? What are you finding? Where is there to research his possible service along with John Scalf Sr. Thanks, Marty Gabe MartyGabe.Studio@verizon.net
Hello Marty,
I just saw your post. I am still researching Benjamin as well as the rest of the family. At this point, it does not appear that Benjamin served in the Revolutionary War. If so, the records did not survive and he is not listed on any Revolutionary index I have seen.
His obituary suggests he was born around 1765, however, this is doubtful according to the age of his brother John Sr. and earlier census records. I believe he was born sometime between 1767 and 1770 but again, that is only my opinion.
I don't have anything new to share with you on the research at the moment but feel free to email at anytime. Things turn up almost daily so you never know when that might happen.
I have a number of updates and corrections to make on some of the material already written and am in the process of writing on the children of John Sr. at the moment.
I hope to have more material to read by the time the snow starts to fly so do stop by again and email me anytime!!

I learned something that I have been looking for in this article about Penelope. For years I have been searching for the name of Penelope's husband. For a long time I thought her to be the mother of my gg-grandfather Pleasant Parker, born c1820. I have lately decided that he may be Daniel Parker's son. Daniel Parker is listed in Habersham County, GA 1830 census with a son that would fit Pleasant's age. In school records in Habersham County,GA in 1834, I found John Parker age 17, Lewis Parker age 15, Pleasant Parker age 14, and Elizabeth age 10. According to the 1850 Gilmer County, GA census, the same Daniel Parker that was in Habersham County, GA in 1820, l830, and Lumpkin 1840, was born 1800. When looking at Penelope's children, the child Ranie born 1803 caught my eye. The letters (anie) I noticed were a part of the word Daniel. Could the child's name have been Danie (short for Daniel) instead of Ranie? Any help you can give me would be appreciated. Thanks, Estelle Parker Wall, epwall@adelphia.net

Elizabeth, there is much more information to be posted just as soon as I can get it all organized to post. I'm not sure if Emory is listed in Elmer or Henry's books but I do have some information on him and it will be posted under the sons of John Scalf Sr. I don't know exactly what I do have on Emory at the moment. Due to some illnesses in the family, the writing had to be discontinued for awhile but things are beginning to get better here and that will be happening soon! If you would like, you can email me at virgo@chartertn.net

I just stumbled on you site by accident. My mother was Elizabeth Ann Williamson, Daughter of Maude Scalf Williamson. She passed away in august of 2000. I had no idea that the history of the Scalfs was being tracked. It is very interesting to see how far back our family goes.
To help with a little information, my mother married Wayne Blackburn Jr in April of 1951 and had 4 children.
Hello, I just stumbled onto your Scalf website and am very glad to have found it. Even after reading through your material I'm still confused about where my Scalf ancestor fits. Can anyone help clarify for me?
I am descended from John M. Emmert (1858-aft 1930) and Adaline Scalf (1856-1929). Adaline is in the household of Levi and Sarah (Scalf) Taylor in Carter Co. TN 1860-1880 (a niece).
Adaline married John Emmert on Sept 11, 1883 in Carter Co.
Who were Adaline Scalf's parents???
Would like to share info on this line. Thanks.

In reference to the researcher on Maude Scalf Williamson. Your line goes back to Brittan Scalf and Telitha Couch. Brittan was son of John Scalf Sr. and Edeah Carlisle Scalf. Go to the search engine and search for Brittan Scalf. You will find a lot of material in the writings of Henry Scalf and Elmer Scalf concerning this family. My research on this family is not posted at this time but will be in the future. Good luck and thanks for your help! Email me if you have questions. Margaret
To Lynne Sinclair:
Lynne, Adeline was the daughter of Benjamin Scalf. Benjamin was the son of David S. Scalf of Carter County, TN. David S. was the son of Lewis Scalf.
Go to the David S. Scalf chapter to read about this Benjamin. For confirmation that Adeline was his daughter, click on the selection at the side of the main page "Interviews" go to #2 Interview with Mrs. Motychak. This paragraph is listed there.
"Addie [living with Levi & Sarah Taylor in 1880 census] married John Emmert, the brother of Sarah Jane Ellen Emmert (Solomon David Scalf's wife). Addie's boy was Jessee. Addie had a brother named Ike (Isaac) and they were Benjamin's children."
Benjamin married Lydia Mayfield.
Margaret
To Joan Brundy McCleary:
Joan, your line is Jesse Scalf and Eliza Collins, son of John Scalf Sr. and Edeah Carlisle Scalf. Felix was the son of Blackgrove (Grover) Scalf and Margaret Akmon. Blackgrove (Grover) was the son of Jesse Scalf and Eliza Collins. Go to the search engine and type in "Jesse Scalf." You will find a lot of material on this line from the writings of Henry Scalf and Elmer Scalf. I will also be posting some soon. We appreciate any input you would be willing to share on this family.

I have not been able to find the records you note in here - "Records of Grainger County, Tennessee, show that Jacob Lay made Richard Scalf a deed to land adjoining Jacob's land on Hogskin Creek, March 6, 1883, where it is said Richard Scalf died. After his death a deed shows that he disposed of this land prior to death for an annuity of care to one of his step-daughters and her husband. A suit was instituted later by other step-children as claimants but it was proven they were not children of Richard as claimed. These are the only records on the Scalfs in Grainger County from 1796 to 1885. It is possible they were in Campbell County at an earlier date.
What suit proved that they were not the children of Richard. Please help - I am a descendant of his wife's sister and thought all this time that three children were his despite the fact that 2 of them were born prior to their marriage in 1852. Thanks. Vickie (vickiepeterson_ok@hotmail.com)

Hello- Barbara Scalf Stairley again. I thought I had better read all of the posts before I asked my Q's, in case someone had my info already listed.
I am the daughter of ALbert Roger Scalf. He was one of the sons of HEnry Edward Scalf and Maude MAi Allen. Henry Edward Scalf was the son of JAmes Monroe Scalf and Minerva P. Scalf. JAmes and Minerva had 10 children. I know there was marriage with Native American Indians, but I don't know who or when. But I think one of MAude Mai's grandparents was Blackfoot Indian. Maude Mai had a half sister in Memphis and a sister in Fair, MO. Half sister was Minnie May Williams.
Henry Edward Scalf had a brother JAmes Frank Scalf called Jim Frank. ALso had a brother Thomas Scalf and a brother Clarence Scalf.
Because of another Scalf site by Stephen I have met Kenneth Scalf. His dad Evans and my dad were brothers.
Any help is appreciated. I don't know if there is any link, but it is fun to find out. I really like this site!! Thank you~ Barbara
Barbara Scalf Stairley here again, I posted 2 messages before(or I tried to) and I only see one now. So I must have done something incorrectly! And the posting I do not see is the one where I left my email contact info. If anyone has info about my line of the Scalf family, I would really appreciate it. bstairley@copper.net
I met someone I though was Elmer in NC, but after reading all of this history and all of these Scalf lines, everything sounds familiar! I lived in Pasquotank Co, NC for awhile and met a very nice man. He wrote a Scalf book about his life and lineage and he was a pastor at a church near us off of highway 17. When we moved, I always thought I would contact him again, but I lost his number/info.
I am just starting to get serious about putting together family heritage/family trees.
Thanks in advance, Barbara
Friends and Scalf Family,
I apologize for appearing uninterested in answering your comments. It has not been due to lack of interest I assure you. Please bear with me as my computer went down several weeks ago and I now have that problem taken care of. However, my mother is seriously ill at the moment and we don't know if she will make it or not. She is in the hospital and scheduled for the Nursing Home where she can received "around the clock" care. They are trying to stabilize her at the moment but she has pneumonia and your prayers are requested. I hope to be able to respond to your comments and email soon. There is much to post that was almost ready to be posted when these series of events happened. Thank you all so very much for your patience and interest in our family. I hope to be back soon!

I was surprised to find a site on the internet documenting our family history. I was searching to see if the internet had my grandfathers current address and stumbled across it. but at the same time felt a sense of family pride. I have yet to review all of its content, and I will now be a frequent visitor. I would like to express my appreciation. I will be back soon..

My grandfather was Samuel Thomas Scalf, born 1909, married Delora Geynell (Baxley) Scalf and had lived in the Pocahontas area of Arkansa. Their children were, Dudley, Sharon, Henry, Larry and Garry. My father Gerald Lee Scalf, born Oct. 1935 in West Ridge Ark. moved to LaPorte, In. and married Joanna Beason in 1966. My name is John Samuel Scalf Born Feb. 24, 1962 in Laporte In. I know alot of my fathers mothers family, but my fathers fathers father, we know nothing. Recently I had taken the trip to Scalf, Ky. and found in the library a link to where I was born and placing ancestry ties in kentucky to Laporte In. The Knox Co. Library was open that Saturday and I checked out one of the reference books named "History and Families, 1709-1994, Knox County, Ky". This book could not leave the library but I had copied some of the info pertaining to the Scalf Family and it was recorded in that book (volume 91), that Laporte, In. played apart in the frontiering of the Scalf Family. My question still remains of Who was my grand fathers parents? I have a lot more info of the Scalf Family from Ark. and LaPorte. Many are still alive and they are just as interested as I am about the Scalf Ancestry. This newly found info in Kentucky was quite interesting. Infact, When I went to the post office in Scalf Ky and presented my I.D. so I can get indepth with my questioning, I was surprised that no more Scalfs live in Scalf, KY (I felt like a king for a day being the only Scalf there at that time...LOL) Looking forward to sharing info with you folks...My e-mail is We2rcovered@wmconnect.com
Hello, my name is John Sullivan and I am the gggrandson of Peter Sullivan and Catherine Ayrehart, the parents of Susannah Sellards. I stumbled onto this on the internet ane found it to be very interesting:
"Susannah was a daughter of Peter and Catherine Ayrehart Sullivan. Peter was a Revolutionary War soldier and for good reason, having been exiled from England for breaking a riding switch from a coffee tree transplanted to Merrie England by a great lord. He "took up" land near the present Ivel but died in Wayne county, West Virginia. Small wonder that Susannah Sellards told and retold old stories of the past and inculcated in her descandants a love of historical lore. It may have been this legendary story of the coffee tree that caused Phoebe Stratton, mother of Alice Scalf, to set out a coffee tree in her garden. Where it came from no one remembers, and it died under adverse climate."
I never have been able to find where Peter was born, parents, siblings, etc.... I would love to hear the whole story about him breaking the switch, or any other info on Peter, or Catherin.
Thank you so much! John Sullivan bigjohnsully@yahoo.com

Hi Scalfs! My husband is Jeffrey A Scalf, son of Charles W Scalf & Tresia D Hensley-Scalf. Charles was born & lives in Johnson City, Tennessee. I'm told that Charlie's father had lots of kids. My husband & I live in NY (where I'm from), and I've always been curious as to where the name descends from. Where did the Scalf name originate? It's an unusual name for us yankees and we'd really like to learn more about the history. Someone email me please at tai1257@msn.com . Thanks, Taina Scalf
Hi Actually it was an old Scalf's Indian River Medicine bottle that brought me to the site. I wondered if someone could help me date it or at least tell me when the Scalf's company went out of business. Thank you in advance for any help you may have to offer. --Larry Relitz larryonthebayou@provide.net The first letter of my email is a lower case L, not an i.

My cousin sent me this link and I am having trouble understanding it all! I wonder if my Dad is listed on this site. His name is Thomas Wayne Scalf. He is the son of Robert E. Lee Scalf and Pauline (Conway) Scalf..
I am his daughter (1 of his 4 children). My name is Laura Ann (Scalf) Pitt.
Any info someone could send me would be great. Or if you can tell me where to look on this site..
Thanks!!
To Harley Scalf: Hello Harley, We're glad you like the site. I am working on some of the West Virginia families at the moment but I cannot place Howard just yet. Do you have some dates on him? Concerning the book you mentioned, I'm not sure which book you are talking about. Henry P. Scalf did Chronicles of the Scalf Family and there are no copies left to my knowledge. Elmer D. Scalf authored Scalf Family History which I believe is still available. Check the homepage of this site for information on how to get a copy of it. My writings are free to copy for personal use and are listed on the homepage by chapters. There are a number of chapters yet to post and we will be posting those soon. Thanks! Margaret
To Laura Ann (Scalf) Pitt:
Laura, there appears to have been two Robert E. Lee Scalf's. One is from the line of Brittan Scalf and the other is believed to be from the line of Robert Scalf. I'm not sure yet, but I believe there has been some confusion with the name. Go to the Search Engine on the home page and type in "Robert Scalf" read the information on Robert Scalf that comes up then use the Search Engine and type in "Brittan Scalf" and read that information. I believe Robert E. Lee is listed near the end but you can use your "find" function to find it. I am working on these lines now and more information will be posted on them. I hope to have this sorted out soon with an update posted. Margaret

Hello. My name is Cliff Holland. I'm looking into Milinda Scalf. Daughter of Robert & Marthe Scalf SR. It is said that she had a son with a Richard Henry Holland and they never married. Richard is my GGGrand Father. The child she had was named Pharris. She may have married a William Payne shortly before she died. I would like to find information on her please. I have full information on the Holland line from Richard and Pharris. I live in Dallas Texas and I know of a cemetery up in McKinney Texas that has a large amount of Scalf's buried in it. I can research the cemetery and get digital photo's of head stones if anyone would like them along with names. The name of the cemetery is Pecan Grove, and it has been there a long time. My e-mail address is the_hollands01@yahoo.com
I am helping my friend who is trying to research her genealogy. With her permission, I am contacting you on her behalf. Recently, she has been diagnosed with a life-threatening disease and some treatment methods and subsequent medical care for her and her family may be determined by the results of her familial medical history. However, she was adopted at birth and has almost no information about her birth parents and family.
She is related to the Scalf family, but, these are the only "facts" she knows:
She is "Baby Girl" Scalf - born 9 March 1962 - Riverside County, CA - in the "county hospital"
She is the youngest child of her birth parents marriage. There are four older children, her siblings, born to this marriage.
Her birth mother is under 5 feet tall and her birth father above 6 feet.
At the time she was born, her birth parents may have been in the process of a divorce or were separated.
She has been told the reason she was put up for adoption is that her birth mother wanted out of the marriage because she had met someone else, and was getting ready to marry him.
The adoption was a private adoption and she was adopted by a couple living in Northern California.
We are wondering if you may have information or can suggest where we may look next. Being able to learn some family medical history or other relative history would be of great help and comfort to her at this critical time.
My friend is interested in making further connection only if the Scalf family is interested. She would be delighted to meet her Scalf parents, siblings, or other relations and learn more about her birth family and history. However, she understands this may be a sensitive matter and does not wish to intrude or impose herself upon others, particularly if she is not welcome or it may cause someone hardship or embarrassment.
Thank you for allowing us this opportunity and for your time and consideration.
Sincerely, Cheryl W on behalf of "Baby Girl" Scalf workwise at att.net
My husband was a descendent of Robert Scalf through his Mother. I'd like to send you my information on this family if possible. Please let me know if I'm able to do this. My E-mail is dspann@pmt.org

This is going to sound really nutty but I am searching for long lost, very good friends named Glenn Stephen Scalf & Margie Campbell Scalf. They were from in and around Elizabethton, TN. They had two children; Stephen (Stevie) Glenn & Christopher (Chris). We met when both of our families lived in a apartment development in Hyattsville, Maryland in ca 1968. Glenn was a member of the plumbers union. Margie didn't work. My children's names are Tisha (Tish now 42 yrs) & Christopher (Chris now 36). This was a long shot but I have been into my family Genealogy since 1972 so I decided to try this avenue to locate them. I have looked everywhere on the net for Margie & Glenn. I lost track of them after they moved back to Elizabethton, TN this was in the 70's. I noticed that Barbara Ellen Scalf in 2001 posted a query about Scalf's in Elizabethton, TN. She could be a sister of Glenn or some other relative. Eagerly awaiting a reply, Mickey Daniels You can email me at: tmhfbred@netins.net Right now I'm using my husband's computer at work so don't send a reply here because he is computer illiterate and usually ends up deleting most of the e-mail's that he receives. HAHA.
I have recently posted some old family photos on my website. There are a number I haven't been able to identify yet. If you have a chance to look at them, maybe you can help me out.

Hi, I wanted to update you on my father, Charles Hickmen Scalf. Born 2-5-1919.Son of Gaines and Mae (Stout) Scalf. It's true that he did wed Ina Louis Crisp and had 4 children. Bobbi, Don, Charlsie, and Kay. Not sure how long they were married but I do know that they were divorced in the 60's. He moved to Atlanta, Ga. where he met my mom. They were married and had me Susan D. Scalf June 1964. Then in June of 1966 they had my sister Charlsie Kay Scalf (yes my dad did name my sister after his two daughters from his first marriage). Charles and Virginia lived in Atlanta for over 30 years before moving out of the city. He passed away of lung cancer on May 16, 2003. My mom passed away 5 days later on May 21, 2003. She had a heart attack. My dad was a WWII Vet and he fought with General Patton in Germany. I'm not sure about he children from his marriage but from myself he has 2 grandkids my son Joseph F. III 2-3-88 and my daughter Jolie F. 1-13-93. My dads sister Wonde married a man named Pete Dodson and they lived in Forest Park Ga. till they passed away. My dads brother Ed. moved to Atlanta in the 70's a few years after Gaines and Mae passed away in 1975. Ed passed away in the late 80's or early 90's. That's all I can think of for now. Thanks for the info I got on this web site. Its good to know your history. You need to know where you came from in order to get to where you are going. Very Respectfully Susan D. Scalf, Proud daughter of Charles Hickmen Scalf Grandchild of Gaines and Mae Scalf of Knoxville, TN.
P.S. I for got to put my mom's info. Her name was Virginia Mary Mathis, born April of 1934. She was from Alexander City Al.

My name is Susan Harris and I've been trying to do research on my family. My great grandmother was Donna Scalf, and I found your website to be very informative. Just wanted to fill in a couple of small blanks for you, Donna's daughter Wanda (we know her as Jean or Grandma Blount) was married to Jimmy Clark Blount who passed away Jan.26,1989. They had two children, Jimmy Clark Jr. and Jill Blount( now Parsons). My father is Jim. He married Nancy Keithley and have two children from that marriage, myself and my brother David. The point of my research was to try and find any information as to who fathered Grandma Donna's children. It is not a popular subject in my family and has been a family secret. Rumor has it he may have been a man of "color" wich would explain my fathers and grandmother's dark indian like features. I'll keep searching, but in the meantime I enjoy all your research! Thanks, Susan Harris JDHarris999@aol.com

Hi Scalf's everywhere. Kay Allison and I have have been looking into the family military history lately. I've recently been in contact with Margaret and found she has the same interest but with all the family research she doesn't have a lot of time to devote to it. So, she's asked me to help out and the best way I know to find information about the family is from the family itself. So here's everyone's chance to add a little personal information to the family history. If you or any member of your family (especially the women of the family) has served in any branch of the service since WWII (including Coast Guard and Merchant Marines) please send me their names and the dates they served as well as the branch of service. At this point documentation isn't as important as the initial listing but any scanned copies of discharge/retirement papers, death certificates issued by the services, etc... would be appreciated. Margaret has plenty of information leading up to WWII but some of it is a little sketchy as it involves draft registration cards but not actual service records. We are mainly interested in service during the Korean War, Vietnam, Desert Shield/Storm, Afghanistan, or the current operations in Iraq. All our information indicates the family has a strong military presence during every armed conflict this country has been involved in and we're just looking to put it down on paper for everyone to see and be proud of. E-mail whatever information and/or documents you can to dascalf@charter.net Thanks in advance Dean Scalf TSgt, USAF, Retired

To the descendant of Rhoda and Josha McVay. There is quite a bit of information on the Peter Scalf line listed at the site; however, you will need to use the Search Engine. The line of Peter Scalf has been written about by two prior authors, Henry P. Scalf and Elmer D. Scalf, both books are listed in full on the website. I will also be posting a chapter on the Peter Scalf line. Thanks for stopping by!! Margaret

Somebody knows about history of the ancestors form Manx island? Nancy C. Scalf scalf_nancy@yahoo.com.mx
To Nancy Scalf, can't help you with Manx but I've seen evidence that the first SCALF in this country (EDWIN SCARFE) came from the Isle of Wight and possibly before that from Wales around Cardiff or Glamorgan. I don't have any hard proof but it's possible the name (SCARFE) dates back as far as the 1000's in and around those two towns but apparently comes from Wales. The Isle of Wight and The Isle of Manx where both places to join a ship heading for the colonies. Hope this helps.

Hello, Margaret, I have a correction to the Berryman Scalf chapter. I am the daughter of Earnest Scalf (<Sylvanis<Simpson<Berryman) My father's obituary is copied, but Ann Richardson is mistakenly listed as a daughter. Actually she was a daughter-in-law, married to my brother Curtiss. She died of cancer in 1994. There are 10 children of Earnest Scalf and Virgil (Eldridge) Scalf. Thank you, Janie (Scalf) Boyer (janieboyer@aol.com)

Looking for information on any of these folks: - My mother Scalf family (Isaac Scalf & Nannie Mae Glover Scalf descendents of Sullivan Co., TN) were related to Aunt Sude Salts (I am not sure that I am spelling her nickname of Sude correctly) but my mother doesn’t know how they were related. We have a 1908 Embreeville, TN post card sent to my grandmother, Mary Liddie Scalf, with the greeting “Hello cousin” and it is signed “from cousin W. H. Salts”. Mom said that she was told that Aunt Sude Salts lived near the Nolichucky River at the end of her life and even left money when she passed away to my grandmother’s Scalf family. We have a picture of Aunt Sude Salts by herself sitting in a rocking chair on her front porch. Would LOVE to learn the connection between this Scalf & Salts' family! - George Washington Scalf (son of Malachi & Ellen Spivey Scalf) married my great-aunt Lula Adeline Scalf (a daughter of Isaac “Ike” Scalf & Nannie Glover of Sullivan Co., TN). - Charles Malachi Scalf (son of Malachi & Ellen Spivey Scalf)& his wife Nettie Carr. If you would share information and/or old pictures I would be most grateful. I am happy to share the family information that I have with you! Sherry m-sreeter@earthlink.net
Does anyone have ancestry information for Ellen Spivey the wife of Malachi Scalf? Also, looking for a picture of Malachi and his grave. If you can help, please contact me. Thank you so much! Sherry Reeter m-sreeter@earthlink.net
I am searching for photos, stories and information on Rosannah Gibson, wife of Ira Scalf. I would be very thankful if anybody that has such material at hand would mind sharing it with me. Rosannah is my great, great, great maternal grandmother, and I'm fascinated with her life. Thanks! Samantha debbie1950@cox.net
We are looking for information on Amanda Branham and James Hubbard. We also would like to know if the Scalf family are Native American.

I have a Dolly Horn age 9 in 1880 census in TN so born approx 1871 and daughter of JW and SF Horn. In 1900 there is a Samuel B Scalf with a daughter Bessie Ellen Scalf residing with JW & SF Horn in Indian Territory. Samuel B is listed as a son-in-law and widowed and age 31 and born in 1868 in Kentucky. Bessie Ellen Scalf is shown as grand daughter and age 7, born in 1892 in Kentucky. In 1910 census Bessie E Scalf, grand daughter is still shown with JW & SF Horn in New Mexico. Samuel B. Scalf is not shown with them. I am trying to make the connection between the Horn family and the Scalf family. I can find potential connections, but nothing I can document. Any assistance you can provide might prove mutually beneficial. Thanks. Glen Horn 6 Castlebar Ct Montgomery Village, MD 20886 301-990-1733 glenhorn@erols.com
My ggf was Samuel Scalf, who married Maggie Elizabeth Graham in Anderson Co.,
TN 22 Dec 1903. they were divorced there in 1906. My grandmother's birth
certificate lists him as being from Carter Co., TN. I have found a Samuel
Washington Scalf in Wise Co., VA with wife America. His WW I and WW II draft
cards list his birth as 24 Feb 1884 in Carter Co., TN. I am sure that this is
the Samuel Washington Scalf who is a son of Soloman David Scalf as listed on the
1900 census of Carter Co., but am not absolutely certain that he is the same
Samuel Scalf from Carter Co. who is the father of my grandmother. If anyone out
there has any further info on him, I would very much appreciate it.

Kyle Scealf Po Box 603 Walhalla, SC 29691 Email: scealf91@yahoo.com My Last Name is Scealf. It is pronounced as "Skelf". I really like the page. It has given me a lot of basic information. Ever since I can remember I have always been interested in meeting my ancestors or finding out who they were. I am only 16 years old but I find it all very interesting. The web site is great. My interests are in finding out who my ancestors are! Aren't we all? If anyone can help me with this question it would be highly appreciated! Every year we have family reunions and one of my dad's cousins is there, and he says he read in a book in his public library that we were related to Jesse James: The Outlaw. I have looked through information on the Internet of Jesse James Family Tree but have found nothing. I do not see a connection anywhere, that maybe because I am only 16 and I am not sure of how to look. I was wondering if I was related to him?
