Daughters of John Scalf

NANCY SCALF

Nancy Scalf, daughter of John Scalf and Edeah Carlisle Scalf, was born April 29, 1790 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. Nancy married a Collins and she had five children by 1845. Although Nancy's husband had died by 1850 and his first name is not known, the author lists here the names of four of Nancy's children for those interested in this line of the family. Nancy lived in Hancock County, Tennessee after her marriage. In 1860, Nancy went to Whitley County, Ky. to visit the family of Jonothan Hurst. Ira Scalf's son, Greenberry Scalf, had a daughter, Mollie, who married Brown Hurst in Laurel County, Ky. in 1886. Whitley County joins Laurel County at Corbin, Ky. Brown Hurst is believed to be the son of Jonothan Hurst.

MARY "POLLY" SCALF

Mary "Polly" Scalf, daughter of John Scalf and Edeah Carlisle Scalf, was born on March 22, 1788 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. She married Alexander Trent and lived in Claiborne County (later in 1844) and in Hancock County, Tennessee. Hancock was formed from Claiborne County and Hawkins County in 1844. The Trents were among the very first pioneer families to settle at Greasy Rock as Hancock was referred to in the old days. Polly lived near her father and her brother, Ira Scalf, on the southside of the Clinch River. There were so many Trent Families living in this area that different " clans" were given unique names to facilitate identifying particular Trent families. One such clan were the "Snowbird" Trents. Five such clans were, Snowbird Trents, Sop Trents, Black Trents, White Trents and Omi Trents. Alexander Trent, husband of Polly S calf, was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. He was the son of Alexander Trent, grandson of William Trent, great-grandson of William Trent and Ersula Bunch, great-great grandson of Henry Trent and Elizabeth Sherman. This Trent family later migrated to Kentucky. One descendant, Isaih Trent, married Emily Hubbard 11-26-1854 in Knox County, Kentucky. Witnesses were Thomas Lockhard and William Scalf
